Product Overview

Fosroc Proofex Integral is an integral waterproofing admixture from Fosroc added to concrete at the batching stage — at the ready-mix plant or at the site mixer — to chemically modify the concrete mix and reduce the permeability of the hardened concrete structure from within the concrete mass. The principle of integral waterproofing is fundamentally different from surface membrane waterproofing: surface membranes (Proofex 30, Nitoproof 400, bituminous sheets) are applied to the outside face of a structure after concrete is placed and cured, forming a separate waterproof layer that prevents external water from reaching the concrete; integral waterproofing admixtures are added to the concrete itself during mixing, treating the entire concrete mass so that the concrete itself becomes less permeable and more water-resistant throughout its cross-section. Proofex Integral contains a hydrophobic polymer system that is dispersed through the concrete mix during batching — on hardening, the hydrophobic polymer coats the internal concrete capillary pore walls, reducing the capillary suction that draws water through the concrete under water vapour pressure differential and reducing the hydraulic conductivity of the concrete matrix at all points through the structure cross-section. Integral waterproofing admixtures are particularly valuable for underground and buried concrete structures (basement slabs, pile caps, grade beams, retaining walls, underground tanks) where: the application of a surface membrane on the pressure face (underside) of a slab is not possible before the slab is poured; the concrete section itself provides the primary waterproofing through reduced permeability; or the concrete structure is designed as a water-retaining structure with no external membrane (Type B structure per BS 8102 protected by concrete construction quality). Proofex Integral is used in combination with good concrete mix design (low water-cement ratio, adequate cement content, quality aggregate grading), proper compaction, and thorough curing — the admixture reduces permeability but cannot compensate for poor mix design, poor compaction, or inadequate curing that leave macro-voids and honeycombing in the concrete. Space Arc Engineering distributes Proofex Integral for basement, foundation, and water-infrastructure concrete projects across Delhi NCR, Ghaziabad, and Northern India.

Applications

  • Basement slab and raft foundation concrete — integral waterproofing of ground-contact slab
  • Retaining wall concrete — reduced permeability from internal treatment throughout wall thickness
  • Underground water storage and sewage treatment tank concrete — integral liquid resistance
  • Swimming pool shell concrete — reduces permeability from within the concrete shell
  • Bridge deck concrete — reduces chloride ion penetration and permeability of deck concrete
  • Pile cap and grade beam concrete in aggressive soil and groundwater environments

Key Advantages

  • Integral — treats the entire concrete mass, not just the surface membrane
  • Works from within — effective even when surface membrane is not applied on pressure face
  • Reduces capillary suction — reduces water vapour drive through the concrete pore system
  • Added at batching stage — simple liquid admixture addition to ready-mix or site-mixed concrete
  • Compatible with standard concrete admixtures including superplasticizers and retarders
  • Does not reduce concrete compressive strength at recommended addition rates

Frequently Asked Questions

Does adding Fosroc Proofex Integral to concrete eliminate the need for an external waterproofing membrane on a basement slab and when is integral waterproofing alone sufficient?

Fosroc Proofex Integral is a permeability-reducing admixture that reduces the rate of water passage through the concrete mass — but it does not convert concrete into an impermeable material equivalent to a properly applied waterproof membrane, and in most basement and below-grade applications in India, Proofex Integral is used as a supplement to (or improvement of) the concrete quality rather than as a complete replacement for external membrane waterproofing. The question of whether integral waterproofing alone is sufficient depends on the type of structure, the groundwater conditions, and the performance standard required. Integral waterproofing alone (without an external membrane) may be adequate for: Type B structures (BS 8102 — structurally integral waterproof concrete) designed specifically as water-retaining or water-excluding reinforced concrete structures with a design water-cement ratio of 0.45 or below, designed crack width below 0.2 mm, minimum cover of 50 mm, adequate reinforcement to control cracking, and water table below the finished floor level for most of the year; non-critical below-grade structures (grade beams, pile caps) where minor seepage is acceptable and there is no risk of water damage to the interior (no finished floor levels, no electrical equipment, no habitable space above); and in combination with a surface crystalline waterproofing system (Cemseal, Sika Krystol) which further reduces permeability. Integral waterproofing alone is NOT sufficient for: habitable basements in India (apartments, offices, commercial spaces below grade) where a dry basement is required — the Indian climate with monsoon-season high groundwater table and long periods of hydrostatic pressure demands full membrane waterproofing for habitable basements; structures with design crack widths above 0.2 mm or with movement joints (integral waterproofing does not seal cracks or movement joints); structures below a permanent water table (greater than 0.3 bar hydrostatic pressure) without membrane waterproofing and drainage.

Can Fosroc Proofex Integral be used together with a surface-applied Fosroc membrane (Proofex 30 or Nitoproof 400) in the same construction and does the combination provide better waterproofing than either system used alone?

Yes — combining Fosroc Proofex Integral (added to the concrete mix) with a surface-applied membrane (Proofex 30 or Nitoproof 400) is a recognised and recommended waterproofing system for critical below-grade structures (Type C structures per BS 8102 — combined structural and drained protection), and the combination provides better overall waterproofing protection than either system used in isolation. The complementary relationship between the two systems works as follows: the surface membrane (Proofex 30 applied externally or Nitoproof 400 applied to the concrete face) provides the primary barrier against bulk water and hydrostatic pressure, preventing the large-scale water ingress that would occur through an unprotected concrete surface; the Proofex Integral in the concrete provides a secondary line of defence if the surface membrane is ever damaged, punctured, or breached at a joint or detail — rather than allowing water that has penetrated the membrane breach to flow freely through the permeable concrete into the basement, the integral waterproofing slows the penetration rate significantly, providing time for detection and remediation; in addition, the reduced permeability of the Proofex Integral-modified concrete means that any water that reaches the concrete substrate through membrane pinholes or micro-defects penetrates only slowly, reducing the rate of long-term deterioration even without immediate remedial action. The combined system is particularly valuable for critical infrastructure (hospital basements, data centre below-grade facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturing basement, metro station structures) where a zero-seepage standard is required and where redundancy in the waterproofing is specified. Space Arc Engineering can supply both Proofex Integral (added at the ready-mix plant) and Proofex 30 or Nitoproof 400 (applied by the waterproofing specialist) for combined integral and external membrane waterproofing systems for your basement project across Delhi NCR.

At what stage in the ready-mix batching process should Proofex Integral be added and can it be added to the transit mixer truck after the concrete has left the batching plant?

Fosroc Proofex Integral is a liquid admixture and is best added at the ready-mix concrete batching plant at the time of batching — the same point at which all other liquid admixtures (water-reducing admixtures, superplasticizers, retarders) are added to the concrete. The correct addition sequence at the batching plant is: aggregate and cement are loaded into the mixer; the gauging water (adjusted for aggregate moisture content) is added; Proofex Integral is added to the mix water in the holding tank or directly to the mixer alongside or immediately after the water addition — at this stage, the Proofex Integral disperses through the full concrete batch and is uniformly distributed through the mix during the full mixing cycle; any superplasticizer or other admixtures are added per the standard batching sequence. Proofex Integral can be added to the transit mixer truck drum after the concrete has been loaded and is in transit, provided the concrete has not yet discharged from the drum and the mixing revolution counter on the truck allows further mixing at full speed — typically, the truck must continue to mix at full drum speed for a minimum of 30 to 50 revolutions (approximately 2 to 3 minutes) after the Proofex Integral addition to distribute the admixture uniformly through the mix. This site-addition approach (adding Proofex Integral at the batching plant discharge point or directly to the truck drum at the site gate) is used when: the contractor receives standard concrete from a ready-mix plant and wants to upgrade the concrete permeability for the basement pour without changing the ready-mix plant mix design; the addition rate per truck can be accurately measured and added on site; and the truck drum revolution counter allows the required mixing duration. The admixture supplier should be consulted for the specific addition method, order of addition relative to other admixtures, and required drum revolutions for uniform dispersion — incorrect addition or insufficient mixing can result in incomplete dispersion of Proofex Integral and non-uniform permeability reduction.
