D-Seal StarGuard
Low-profile floor-to-floor expansion joint cover in extruded ASTM 6063 T6 aluminium — a flush, trip-safe transition over 50–125 mm movement joints in high-footfall Indian commercial interiors.
What is it?
A surface-fixed aluminium cover system that bridges structural movement joints in interior floors, with frame profiles anchored to each slab edge and a low-profile cover plate spanning the gap.
Where is it used?
Interior commercial floors — office corridors and lobbies, mall concourses, hotels and banquet halls, hospitals, airports, convention centres and institutional buildings across Delhi NCR and pan-India.
Why use it?
It keeps the joint free to move (±18% of joint width across 50–125 mm openings) while giving occupants a flush, durable walking surface that will not crack, curl or become a trip hazard.
How is it applied?
Frames are set out along prepared slab edges and anchored through pre-drilled fixing holes; the cover plate then seats into the frames, finishing near-flush with the adjacent floor finish.
About D-Seal StarGuard
Every large floor plate in a commercial building carries deliberate movement joints, and every one of those joints is a maintenance problem waiting to happen if it is simply screeded over or left open. D-Seal StarGuard answers this with a purpose-made floor-to-floor cover: extruded aluminium frame and cover profiles that let the structure breathe while presenting a clean, flush line across corridors, lobbies and concourses. The profiles are extruded from ASTM 6063 T6 alloy to ASTM B221-02, so the system resists the abrasion of constant footfall and rolling trolleys without rusting or staining the surrounding finish.
Space Arc Engineering supplies and installs StarGuard as an authorised D-Seal channel partner. D-Seal is the expansion joint brand of Dhawan Associates, manufactured under ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 certified systems. Because the system is surface-fixed with a pre-drilled anchoring arrangement, it works equally well in new construction and in refurbishment of occupied buildings — a frequent requirement on NCR office campuses where failed joint treatments need replacing without shutting down a floor.
The technical insight
A movement joint exists to absorb thermal expansion, shrinkage and minor structural drift between adjacent slabs — so any treatment that rigidly connects the two edges defeats the joint and cracks. StarGuard works because only the frames are anchored, one to each slab edge, while the cover plate floats across the gap. As the slabs move toward or away from each other, the plate slides within the frames, maintaining a continuous walking surface through roughly ±18% of the nominal joint width across the 50–125 mm range. The choice of 6063 alloy in T6 temper matters here: it extrudes into precise, thin-walled profiles that stay low against the floor finish, yet the solution heat treatment and artificial ageing give it the hardness to shrug off cart wheels and stiletto heels, and its natural oxide layer means no coating to wear through.
Where it is used
- Office building corridors, lift lobbies and reception floors
- Retail showrooms and shopping-centre concourses
- Hotel lobbies, banquet halls and function areas
- Hospital and healthcare corridors carrying bed and trolley movement
- Airport and convention-centre circulation areas with heavy footfall
- Schools, colleges and institutional building interiors
- Refurbishment of failed or open movement joints in occupied buildings
Key advantages
- Flush, low-profile transition removes the trip hazard an open or badly covered joint creates
- Covers joint openings from 50 mm to 125 mm with movement capability of ±18% of joint width
- ASTM 6063 T6 aluminium resists wear and corrosion with no paint or coating to maintain
- Surface-fixed with pre-drilled anchor holes — fast installation and well suited to retrofit work
- Damaged cover sections can be replaced without removing the anchored frames
- Housekeeping is simple: periodic cleaning with neutral detergent and water
- Manufactured to ASTM B221-02 under ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certified systems
Limitations & considerations
- It is a cover, not a seal — StarGuard does not waterproof the joint, so wet areas or below-grade joints need a separate watertight treatment
- Rated for pedestrian and rolling trolley traffic; forklifts and vehicles call for D-Seal LoadMaster, JointMaster or DriveFlex instead
- Being surface-mounted, the plate sits marginally proud of the slab — where a fully recessed finish is specified, a recess-mounted system is the better fit
- Standard supply is mill-finish aluminium, which is functional rather than decorative
- Movement capability is ±18% of joint width in-plane; joints with significant multi-directional or seismic movement need D-Seal AeroGuard
- Acidic cleaners (hydrochloric or hydrofluoric based) attack aluminium and must be excluded from cleaning protocols
Selection & best practice
Start with the joint itself: confirm the as-built gap actually falls within the 50–125 mm range along its full length, and that slab edges are sound, level with each other and free of laitance — a frame anchored to a spalling arris will work loose under traffic. Set the frames out so the finished cover sits level with the adjacent floor finish, not the structural slab; on retrofit jobs this usually means checking finish thicknesses at several points. Anchor through the pre-drilled holes without improvising extra fixings, then seat the cover plate into the frames and verify it slides freely — a plate that binds will telegraph movement into the fixings. Protect the installed run from point loading and dragged materials until handover, and brief the facility team: neutral detergent and water only, no acid-based cleaners, and a fixing inspection folded into routine maintenance. Space Arc’s applicator teams handle site measurement, cutting and installation across Delhi NCR and pan-India.

Industry use cases
Commercial Offices
Multi-tower campuses in Gurugram and Noida run movement joints straight through corridors and lift lobbies. StarGuard gives a flush line that survives daily footfall and housekeeping machines, and its surface fixing lets failed older treatments be replaced floor by floor in occupied buildings.
Retail & Malls
Concourse joints take relentless trolley traffic and are highly visible to shoppers. The low-profile aluminium plate keeps the transition smooth and avoids the cracked screed patches that form when joints are tiled over.
Healthcare
Hospital corridors move stretchers, beds and medicine trolleys around the clock. A flush joint cover prevents wheel jolts across open gaps, and the aluminium surface stands up to frequent washing with neutral cleaning agents.
Hospitality
Hotel lobbies and banquet floors need joint treatments that disappear visually. StarGuard’s slim frame-and-plate arrangement reads as a clean metal line rather than an industrial fixture across marble or vitrified finishes.
Airports & Convention Centres
Long-span floor plates mean wide movement joints under the heaviest sustained footfall and luggage trolley traffic in the country. StarGuard covers openings up to 125 mm while keeping circulation routes trip-safe.

How we position D-Seal StarGuard
StarGuard is the D-Seal range’s answer for interior floor joints under foot and trolley traffic. Step up to JointMaster where a recess-mounted profile with high point-load capacity is specified, LoadMaster for heavy rolling loads with a stainless plate option, or DriveFlex for car-park decks. Where movement is multi-directional rather than in-plane, AeroGuard is the correct selection, while Aerostar and ClampJoint address the wall and ceiling runs of the same joint line. If the joint also needs to be sealed rather than covered — terraces, wet areas, façade lines — Space Arc supplies elastomeric joint sealants from our Sika and Fosroc ranges, and D-Seal’s below-grade system for buried watertight joints.
