D-Seal DuraEdge Seal
Aluminium floor expansion joint system (ref. JDH 5.02) with an interchangeable nitrile rubber insert — flush, pedestrian-rated joint cover for tiled, stone, resin and screed floors in malls, hospitals, airports and metro stations.
What is it?
A mechanical floor expansion joint system built from extruded aluminium 6063 side plates with a replaceable nitrile rubber insert, supplied in 3 m lengths for structural gaps of 20 to 60 mm.
Where is it used?
Pedestrian floors in shopping malls, hotels, hospitals, airports, metro stations, offices and institutional buildings — over tile, natural stone, resin or screed finishes, indoors and out.
Why use it?
It absorbs slab movement of roughly ±3 to ±10 mm without cracking the floor finish, sits flush for trolley and footfall comfort, and the worn insert can be swapped without breaking open the floor.
How is it applied?
Aluminium side sections are anchored through pre-drilled holes into the recess on each side of the structural gap, levelled flush with the finished floor, and the nitrile insert is locked in with hot-welded junctions for continuity.
About D-Seal DuraEdge Seal
Every structure with long floor plates, podiums or connected blocks carries expansion joints — deliberate gaps that let the slabs breathe with temperature swings and settlement. The finish over that gap is where most floors fail first: tiles pop, screeds crack and the joint line becomes a trip hazard. D-Seal DuraEdge Seal (reference JDH 5.02) closes that gap properly. It pairs extruded aluminium 6063 side plates with a flexible nitrile rubber insert that flexes as the slabs move, while the metal edges protect the adjoining floor finish from spalling under foot and trolley traffic. Gap sizes from 20 mm to 60 mm are covered, with inserts in black or grey and optional stainless-steel or brass caps where the architect wants a premium sightline.
Space Arc Engineering supplies and installs DuraEdge Seal across Delhi NCR and pan-India. D-Seal manufactures under ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 systems, and our applicator teams handle recess preparation, alignment, anchoring and insert welding — the parts of a joint installation that decide whether it stays flush for years or works loose in months.
The technical insight
The system works by separating the two jobs a floor joint must do. The rigid work — carrying edge loads and protecting the tile or stone arris — goes to the extruded aluminium angle sections, anchored into the concrete on both sides of the gap through factory pre-drilled holes. The flexible work — tracking movement — goes to the nitrile rubber insert, which compresses and extends as the structural gap closes and opens, from about ±3 mm on a 20 mm joint up to ±10 mm on the wider sizes. Because the insert locks mechanically into the aluminium profiles rather than bonding to them, it is genuinely interchangeable: a worn or damaged length is pulled out and a new one fitted with hot-welded junctions, restoring a continuous seal without disturbing the side plates or the surrounding floor. Nitrile also gives useful resistance to the oils and cleaning chemistry typical of commercial floors.
Where it is used
- Expansion joints in tiled and natural-stone floors of shopping malls and retail concourses
- Hospital, hotel and institutional corridors where a flush, trolley-friendly joint line is essential
- Airport terminals and metro station concourses handling heavy pedestrian footfall
- Office buildings, IT parks and commercial lobbies with large floor plates
- Resin and screed industrial floors in pedestrian and light-duty zones
- Floor-to-wall junction joints using the angle variant of the profile
- Exterior walkways and podium decks, coordinated with the waterproofing detail below
Key advantages
- Insert is replaceable in-situ — maintenance never requires cutting open the floor or removing side plates
- Aluminium 6063 edge plates shield tile, marble and stone arrises from chipping at the joint line
- Flush, low-profile surface safe for footfall, wheelchairs, stretchers and luggage trolleys
- One system suits practically all finishes: tile, marble, granite, resin and flexible flooring
- Five gap sizes (20-60 mm) cover most building expansion joint details from a single product family
- Hot-welded insert junctions keep the seal continuous across long runs and direction changes
- Optional stainless-steel or brass caps upgrade the appearance for premium lobbies
- Manufactured under ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certified systems
Limitations & considerations
- Rated for pedestrian traffic only — forklifts, cars and trucks need D-Seal ParkGuard or LoadMaster instead
- Movement capacity tops out around ±10 mm; joints designed for larger seismic or thermal movement need a wider-range system
- It is a joint cover, not a waterproofing membrane — wet areas and exterior decks need a separate sealing detail in the joint below
- Aluminium is attacked by acidic cleaners, so housekeeping teams must stick to neutral detergents
- Performance depends on accurate recess formation; uneven screed or shallow recesses cause rocking and loose edges
- Nitrile inserts wear under sustained abrasion and should be inspected and replaced periodically
Selection & best practice
Set the joint out before flooring starts, not after. Form the recess on each side of the structural gap to match the profile height so the finished assembly sits dead flush with the tile or stone — a proud edge becomes a trip point, a sunken one collects dirt and trolley impact. Check the substrate is sound and level, then anchor the aluminium side sections through the pre-drilled holes at the specified centres, keeping both plates parallel and the gap true along the full run. Fit the nitrile insert last, after wet trades are done, hot-welding junctions at joins and direction changes so the seal stays continuous. On exterior or wet-area joints, complete the waterproofing detail in the gap before the profile goes in. Hand over with a simple maintenance note: neutral detergent and water only, no acidic cleaners on the aluminium.

Industry use cases
Retail & Malls
Long tiled concourses in malls expand visibly between seasons. DuraEdge Seal keeps the joint line flush and presentable, and stores stay open while a worn insert is swapped overnight.
Healthcare
Hospital corridors need joints that stretchers and wheelchairs cross without a jolt. The low-profile edges and grey or black insert integrate cleanly with vinyl and tile floors.
Transport Hubs
Airport and metro concourses combine heavy footfall with luggage trolleys. Aluminium edge protection stops stone arrises spalling where millions of wheels cross the joint each year.
Hospitality
In marble and granite lobbies, the optional brass or stainless caps let the joint read as a design line rather than a maintenance detail.
Commercial Offices
IT parks and office podiums with large floor plates use the 20-60 mm range to standardise one joint system across interiors, terraces and floor-to-wall junctions.

How we position D-Seal DuraEdge Seal
DuraEdge Seal is the D-Seal range’s answer for pedestrian floor joints; where vehicles cross, we move you to D-Seal ParkGuard for parking structures or LoadMaster for heavier wheeled traffic, and D-Seal wall and ceiling profiles complete the same joint line vertically. For narrow movement joints that suit a sealant rather than a mechanical cover, Space Arc also supplies polyurethane and polysulphide joint sealants from our Fosroc and Sika lines, and for exterior expansion gaps we pair the profile with a proper waterproofing detail from those systems. Tell us the gap width, movement and traffic — we will spec the right combination.
