Dr. Fixit Raincoat, from Pidilite’s Construction Chemicals Division, tackles the problem at its source: a single-component acrylic elastomeric coating that seals the external face of the wall while still letting the substrate release vapour.
The formulation combines an acrylic emulsion polymer with UV-resistant pigments, graded fine fillers and biocides, so the same film that waterproofs the facade also resists fading, algae and fungal growth. Supplied ready to use in a white base plus machine-tintable mid-tone and dark bases, it serves as the finish coat too — waterproofing and decoration in one system. The technical insight
Raincoat works through film formation rather than pore blocking. As water in the acrylic emulsion evaporates, the polymer particles coalesce into a continuous elastomeric membrane about 110 microns thick over two coats. Because the cured film elongates at least 100% (ASTM D 412), it flexes with thermal movement of the plaster and spans hairline cracks up to 0.5 mm instead of tearing over them. The membrane repels liquid water yet remains permeable to vapour, so moisture already inside the masonry escapes rather than building blister pressure. Two further properties matter to specifiers: a CO2 diffusion equivalent air layer thickness of 55.3 m (DIN EN 1062-6) makes it a genuine anti-carbonation barrier for reinforced concrete, and a “very low” rapid chloride penetration rating (ASTM C 1202) adds a screening layer for rebar in aggressive exposure.

Limitations & considerations
- Bridges only hairline cracks up to 0.5 mm — pre-fill cracks up to 5 mm with Dr. Fixit Crack-X and anything wider with Pidicrete URP-modified mortar
- Application window is 10–35°C; do not coat in direct sunlight or during rain
- Priming with Dr. Fixit Primeseal is mandatory, and adhesion can suffer over wall putty and very smooth surfaces
- Mid-tone and dark bases cannot be applied as supplied — machine tinting is a must
- Meant for vertical exterior walls, not terraces or surfaces with ponding water
- Entrapped substrate moisture can cause blistering, as with any liquid-applied film — confirm the wall is dry first
Selection & best practice
Allow new plaster or concrete to cure for a minimum of 28 days before coating. Remove laitance, loose particles, oil and grease by wire brushing, and treat algae- or moss-affected areas with a biocide wash. Fill cracks up to 5 mm with Dr. Fixit Crack-X; rake out anything wider and rebuild with Pidicrete URP-modified mortar. Prime with Dr. Fixit Primeseal diluted 2:1 with potable water and let it dry 2–3 hours. Stir the pail well, then apply two coats of Raincoat undiluted by brush, roller or spray, spacing them 5–6 hours apart; budget 3.0–3.5 m² per litre for the two-coat system, adjusting for surface texture and porosity. Give rain-lashing elevations, chajjas and parapets a third coat. Schedule work to avoid direct afternoon sun and stay within the 10–35°C window — outside it, film formation suffers.
