Asian Paints SmartCare SmartCare Roof Tapes
EPDM elastomeric tape that reinforces terrace corners and joints so your waterproofing coat stretches instead of cracking.
What is it?
An EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) elastomeric rubber tape supplied as a running-joint roll plus pre-shaped inner and outer corner pieces, embedded wet into a SmartCare Damp Proof or Damp Block coat to bridge and reinforce terrace corners and construction joints.
Where is it used?
Terrace and roof slab joints, parapet-to-slab corners, balcony and gallery edges, bathroom and swimming-pool corners, canteen floors, and joints between precast or prefabricated cement blocks.
Why use it?
Corners and ‘L’ joints are where waterproofing coatings crack first under thermal movement; the EPDM tape’s 400-500% elongation lets it stretch and recover at these stress points instead of tearing, extending the life of the membrane above it.
How is it applied?
Embedded wet into a thick, undiluted coat of SmartCare Damp Proof or Damp Block after cleaning and priming the surface, pressed flat with a spatula or trowel, then sandwiched under a further coat of the same waterproofing compound — never applied as a standalone peel-and-stick tape.
About Asian Paints SmartCare SmartCare Roof Tapes
Every terrace in Delhi NCR has the same weak point: the 90-degree corner where a parapet meets the slab, or the running joint between two precast panels. Waterproofing coatings are relatively rigid once cured, so when the concrete beneath expands and contracts through Delhi’s 45°C summers and monsoon soaking, the coating at these corners is the first thing to crack. Asian Paints SmartCare Roof Tapes are an EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) elastomeric rubber tape built specifically to sit inside that crack-prone geometry — embedded wet into a coat of SmartCare Damp Proof or Damp Block so the rubber, not the coating film, absorbs the movement.
The range comes in three formats that match how corners actually fail: a 1×10 m roll for running/straight joints, and pre-shaped 4-piece packs for inner and outer corners, so an applicator isn’t stretching a flat strip around a 90° bend and creating a weak fold. It’s positioned as a reinforcement accessory rather than a standalone waterproofing product — it only works as part of the SmartCare Damp Proof or Damp Block system, sandwiched between two coats. At Space Arc, we specify it on most terrace waterproofing jobs across Delhi NCR precisely because corner failure, not open-field failure, is what generates repeat leak complaints two monsoons later.
The technical insight
The tape’s numbers explain the design intent. EPDM rubber at 55° Shore A hardness with 400-500% elongation at break (DIN 53 504) is soft and stretchy enough to move with hairline cracking in the substrate without tearing, unlike a rigid coating film that elongates in single digits. The corner pieces carry a higher tensile rating — 11 N/mm² versus 9 N/mm² for the running-joint tape, per DIN 53 504 — because corners concentrate stress from two intersecting planes meeting at 90°. A -40°C to +100°C service range and DIN 53 309-rated ozone and chemical resistance mean the rubber itself shouldn’t be the failure point once it’s correctly sandwiched under the top coat: UV and ozone exposure are what typically age exposed rubber over time, and full encapsulation in the Damp Proof or Damp Block coating is what prevents that degradation path here.
Where it is used
- Parapet-to-slab and other ‘L’-shaped corner joints on RCC terraces and roofs
- Balcony, gallery, and chajja edge joints prone to hairline cracking from thermal cycling
- Bathroom and wet-area floor-to-wall corners under a SmartCare Damp Block system
- Swimming pool deck-to-wall junctions exposed to constant water and chlorine contact
- Canteen and utility floor joints subject to standing water
- Joints between precast and prefabricated cement blocks
- Sunshade and overhang corner reinforcement ahead of topcoat application
- Running expansion and construction joints on flat roof slabs
Key advantages
- EPDM rubber elongates 400-500% at break (DIN 53 504) before failure — far beyond what a coating film alone can absorb at a stress point
- Pre-shaped inner/outer corner pieces avoid the wrinkling and stress-folding that a flat tape develops when bent around a 90° corner
- Wide rated service range of -40°C to +100°C (DIN 53 519 Teil 2) suits Delhi’s peak summer roof-surface temperatures
- Rated resistant to ozone and general chemical exposure (DIN 53 309), so the rubber doesn’t perish once embedded and sealed under the topcoat
- Simple wet-lay installation with a brush, spatula and trowel — no special adhesives, primers, or heat-welding equipment needed on site
- Reinforces exactly the failure-prone geometry (corners and joints) rather than adding blanket material cost across the whole terrace
- Application-specific pack formats — running-joint roll, 4-piece inner-corner pack, 4-piece outer-corner pack — reduce on-site improvisation
- Backed by Asian Paints’ pan-India retail and technical-service network, so replacement stock is easy to source mid-project
Limitations & considerations
- Not a standalone waterproofing product — it only functions as reinforcement within a SmartCare Damp Proof or Damp Block coat system, so specification and budgeting must include the base coating, not just the tape
- Installation quality is skill-dependent: wrinkles, bubbles, or embedding onto a substrate that’s too dry create a hidden weak point that only shows up in the next monsoon
- The published datasheet lists German DIN/VDA test methods (DIN 53 504, DIN 53 309, DIN 53 519, VDA 675 217) rather than an IS or ASTM equivalent, so specifiers benchmarking to Indian codes will need to cross-reference separately
- The datasheet on file (Version VN01/01/2014) doesn’t state shelf life or maximum UV exposure time before overcoating — worth confirming against current batch documentation for large orders
- Corner-piece geometry is fixed (roughly 130-170 mm side length, 60 mm total height), so unusually large-radius corners or non-standard junctions may need on-site improvisation
- Colour is limited to black (joints) and grey/black (corners) — it is not a decorative product and is always meant to be fully overcoated
Selection & best practice
Never lay the tape onto a dry or dusty surface, and never let the first coat skin over before embedding it — the tape has to go into wet, undiluted Damp Proof or Damp Block, then get pressed flat at the edges with a spatula or trowel to eliminate air pockets and wrinkles before it’s sealed under a second full coat. Match pack to geometry: use the running-joint roll only on straight runs, and switch to the moulded inner/outer corner pieces at actual corners rather than folding the flat tape around a 90° turn, which is where most on-site cracking recurs. Budget the base SmartCare Damp Proof or Damp Block coat on its own coverage rate — the tape adds reinforcement, it doesn’t reduce how much coating the terrace needs.

How we position Asian Paints SmartCare SmartCare Roof Tapes
Within the SmartCare range, this tape is always specified alongside SmartCare Damp Proof for exterior terraces or SmartCare Damp Block for interior wet areas — it’s an accessory to those systems, not a substitute for either. For specifiers benchmarking outside the Asian Paints ecosystem, Fosroc addresses the same corner-cracking problem chemically rather than with a rubber tape: polysulphide/MS sealants such as Nitoseal MS600 seal movement joints, while Fosroc’s Brushbond and Renderoc ranges handle the field membrane. There’s no direct tape-for-tape Fosroc equivalent in the Space Arc catalogue, so the practical choice for a specifier is between the SmartCare tape-and-coating method and a Fosroc sealant-and-membrane method for treating the same corner.
