Fosroc Geotextile NW15kN
Thermally bonded nonwoven polypropylene geotextile for separation, filtration and waterproofing-membrane protection.
What is it?
A white, thermally bonded nonwoven polypropylene geotextile from the Fosroc Geotextile NW range, with a nominal 15 kN/m tensile-strength grade used as a separation, filtration and protection fabric.
Where is it used?
Beneath and above sheet waterproofing membranes (such as Proofex Alkorplan), in basement and podium tanking, tunnels, retaining walls, landfill caps and road/sub-grade separation across Indian infrastructure and building projects.
Why use it?
It keeps dissimilar layers from intermixing, lets water drain freely while holding back soil fines, and cushions costly waterproofing membranes against puncture from sharp substrates and backfill.
How is it applied?
Rolled out and overlapped (typically 100-300 mm) over a prepared surface, loose-laid or lightly spot-bonded, then the membrane or backfill is placed directly on top; no priming or curing is needed.
About Fosroc Geotextile NW15kN
Fosroc Geotextile NW15kN is part of Fosroc’s Geotextile NW range — a family of white, thermally bonded nonwoven fabrics supplied in several strength grades (commonly NW8, NW13, NW32, NW45 and similar) for use as separation and filtration layers. The “15kN” designation refers to the grade’s nominal wide-width tensile strength of approximately 15 kN/m, the convention Fosroc uses to denote the mechanical class of each fabric in the range. Manufactured from continuous polypropylene filaments that are thermally bonded rather than chemically treated, the fabric is chemically inert, rot-proof and stable against the alkalis and salts found in concrete, soil and groundwater — the conditions that matter most on Indian basements, podiums and infrastructure decks. In construction terms, NW15kN sits in the light-to-medium duty band of the range: heavy enough to protect membranes and separate granular layers, light enough to handle and lap quickly on site. For Space Arc Engineering’s customers across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, it most often turns up as the companion fabric to Fosroc’s sheet waterproofing systems, where it acts as a slip and protection layer between the structure and the membrane, and again as a protection layer above the membrane before screed or backfill. Because it is a thermally bonded nonwoven, it combines mechanical robustness with good in-plane drainage and filtration, so it can double as a drainage-promoting filter against retaining walls and land drains. It is an ancillary, accessory-grade material rather than a standalone waterproofing product — its job is to make the primary waterproofing and earthworks perform reliably over the long term.
The technical insight
The defining feature is the thermal bonding process. Instead of needle-punching fibres mechanically or binding them with resins, the polypropylene filaments are fused at their crossover points by heat and pressure. This produces a relatively thin, dimensionally stable fabric with a consistent pore structure and a high strength-to-thickness ratio — it resists creep and does not “neck down” or tear-propagate the way some bulkier needle-punched felts can when a membrane is dragged over them. The trade-off versus a thick needle-punched nonwoven is lower bulk and lower water-storage volume, so NW15kN is engineered for separation, filtration and membrane protection rather than as a high-flow drainage geocomposite. Tensile behaviour is characterised to EN ISO 10319 (wide-width strip), and the grade name reflects that test: a nominal 15 kN/m. Polypropylene’s chemical inertness (it is unaffected by the pH 12-13 environment of fresh concrete) is what lets it sit permanently in contact with Fosroc cementitious and membrane systems. For specifiers, the practical insight is to match the grade to the duty: NW15kN is a sound choice where the controlling requirement is separation and membrane cushioning on a reasonably prepared substrate, and to step up to a heavier grade in the range where coarse rockfill, high overburden or aggressive puncture risk governs.
Where it is used
- Slip, separation and protection layer between the structure and Fosroc sheet waterproofing membranes (e.g. Proofex Alkorplan)
- Protection layer placed over a waterproofing membrane before screed, blinding concrete or backfill is applied
- Separation between dissimilar soil layers and between sub-grade and granular sub-base in roads and hardstandings
- Filtration fabric to French drains, land drains and weep-hole drainage behind retaining walls
- Separation and protection over precast concrete units to permit movement without abrading adjacent membranes
- Cushion and filter layer in basement raft, podium deck and planter/landscape build-ups
- Separation/filtration in tunnel and underground waterproofing assemblies
- Protection of geomembranes and liners in water-retaining and containment structures
Key advantages
- Thermally bonded polypropylene — chemically inert, rot-proof and stable in the alkaline environment of fresh concrete and in soils/groundwater
- Performs two jobs at once: separation of dissimilar layers and filtration that lets water pass while retaining soil fines
- Cushions and protects expensive waterproofing membranes against puncture from sharp substrates and backfill
- Good strength-to-thickness ratio from thermal bonding, with resistance to creep and tear propagation
- Lightweight white fabric that is fast to unroll, cut and lap, reducing site labour
- Promotes free-draining layers that help relieve hydrostatic pressure behind walls and below slabs
- Integrates cleanly with Fosroc waterproofing systems as a matched ancillary, simplifying specification and approvals
- No priming, mixing or curing required — loose-laid and ready for the next layer immediately
Limitations & considerations
- An ancillary separation/protection/filtration fabric — it is not a waterproofing membrane and provides no barrier function on its own
- As a thermally bonded (thinner) nonwoven, it offers less bulk water-storage and in-plane flow than heavy needle-punched felts or drainage geocomposites
- The 15 kN/m grade is light-to-medium duty; coarse rockfill, very high overburden or severe puncture risk calls for a heavier grade in the NW range
- Polypropylene is UV-sensitive — rolls and laid fabric must be protected from prolonged sunlight and covered promptly
- Performance depends on correct overlap, anchorage and a reasonably prepared substrate; poor lapping compromises separation and filtration
- Filtration suitability must be checked against site soil gradation; it is not a substitute for a designed graded-aggregate filter in critical cases
- Exact mechanical/hydraulic values vary by production lot and region — the current Fosroc TDS for the delivery country must govern design
- Not intended for primary structural reinforcement of soil (that is the domain of high-tenacity woven geotextiles/geogrids)
Selection & best practice
Store rolls flat, dry and shaded, in their wrapping, until use, since polypropylene degrades under prolonged UV. Prepare the substrate so it is reasonably smooth and free of projecting sharp objects before laying. Unroll the fabric without dragging the membrane across it, keep it taut and wrinkle-free, and lap adjacent rolls by the amount given in the current Fosroc data sheet (commonly 100-300 mm, increasing on soft or uneven ground). Where it protects a membrane, lay it loose or spot-bond only as the system allows — never penetrate the membrane to fix it. Place the following layer (membrane, screed, blinding or backfill) promptly so the geotextile is not left exposed to sun, wind or foot/plant traffic. For filtration and drainage duties, confirm the grade and pore characteristics suit the site soil and the design flow, and step up to a heavier NW grade where puncture or overburden demands it. Always design and install to the Fosroc Technical Data Sheet applicable to the supply country and, on critical projects, confirm grade selection with Fosroc/Space Arc technical support.

How we position Fosroc Geotextile NW15kN
Fosroc Geotextile NW15kN is best positioned as the matched separation, filtration and protection fabric for Fosroc’s waterproofing and earthworks systems rather than as a standalone product. On a typical Indian basement or podium it pairs naturally with Fosroc Proofex sheet membranes (including Proofex Alkorplan, with which Fosroc specifically lists it as a separating layer) and with Fosroc cementitious tanking and drainage ancillaries. Where the controlling duty is light-to-medium separation and membrane cushioning, NW15kN is the right grade; for coarse rockfill, deep overburden or high puncture risk, step up to a heavier grade in the same Fosroc NW family. Compared with alternatives commonly seen in the Indian market — Sika (e.g. SikaProof and associated protection fleeces/geotextiles), Dr. Fixit and STP (Supreme/Shalimar) protection fabrics, and MBS/independent geosynthetic suppliers — the honest case for NW15kN is system compatibility and a single-source warranty: specifying it alongside Fosroc membranes keeps the waterproofing assembly within one manufacturer’s tested system and approvals. If the project standardises on a Sika, Dr. Fixit or STP membrane, their own protection geotextile is usually the better-matched choice; conversely, generic needle-punched geotextiles from specialist geosynthetic makers can be more economical for pure earthworks separation/drainage where membrane compatibility is not the driver. Space Arc Engineering can advise on the right grade and cross-system pairing for the specific application.
