UltraTech Tilefixo CT
UltraTech’s C1-grade, polymer-modified adhesive built for fast, low-wastage ceramic floor tiling.
What is it?
A single-component, polymer-modified cement adhesive from UltraTech Building Products, classified Type C1 under IS 15477 and tested to EN 12004 (EN 1348).
Where is it used?
Internal ceramic floor tiling — bathrooms, kitchens, retail floors, offices — plus tile-on-tile relaying over sound existing flooring.
Why use it?
Dry and wet tensile adhesion both clear the IS 15477 C1 minimums with room to spare, and a 3 mm bed cuts material use against a traditional sand-cement mortar bed.
How is it applied?
Mix 4 parts powder to 1 part water, comb onto the substrate with a notch trowel, and press tiles in within the 30-minute open time.
About UltraTech Tilefixo CT
UltraTech Tilefixo CT sits in the entry-to-mid tier of the Tilefixo range, positioned specifically as a floor tile adhesive rather than a general-purpose wall-and-floor product. It’s a factory-blended powder — cement, graded fine aggregate and redispersible polymer — that only needs site water to become a workable, non-sag paste. The polymer content is what separates it from a plain sand-cement dry-mix: it improves flexibility and wet-bond retention, which is why the data sheet rates dry and wet tensile adhesion separately, and both figures comfortably clear the IS 15477 C1 minimums.
On site, the real appeal is consistency rather than any single headline number. Every bag mixes the same way, at the same water ratio, to the same working time — which matters when a tiling crew is covering several rooms in a day and can’t afford a batch that sets early or won’t grip. It also takes proportioning cement and sand out of the labourer’s hands, which is where a lot of bond failures on Indian sites actually originate.
It’s built for cementitious substrates only — sound concrete, screeds, cured plaster — and for ceramic tile, not natural stone or the larger-format vitrified pieces that call for a stronger, polymer-rich adhesive from further up the Tilefixo range.
The technical insight
The figures worth watching are the tensile adhesion numbers against the IS 15477 floor. Dry bond comes in at 900 N against a 750 N minimum, and wet bond at 750 N against a 450 N minimum — a wider margin on the wet figure, which is the one that actually predicts failures in bathrooms and other splash-prone floors. Shear adhesion tells a similar story: 6.5 kN at 24 hours against a 2.5 kN minimum, climbing to 12.0 kN by 14 days.
Open time and adjustable time (30 minutes each) are the two numbers a site supervisor should actually track, because they govern the most common real-world failure — tiling over adhesive that’s already skinned. Once the combed ridges form a dry film, the tile beds onto a crust rather than wet adhesive, and pressing harder doesn’t recover proper contact. The 1-hour pot life is generous enough for a batch to be mixed and used out, but it’s not a licence to keep the same spread-out area open on the trowel for an hour.
Coverage math is simple: 4 sq ft per kg at a 3 mm bed, which is where the commonly quoted 80 sq ft per 20 kg bag comes from — thinner beds help, but larger tiles needing a bigger notch will pull that number down.
Where it is used
- Ceramic floor tiling in bathrooms and kitchens
- Retail showroom and commercial interior flooring
- Office and institutional floor tiling
- Tile-on-tile relaying over existing sound floors
- General internal ceramic floor fixing on concrete or screed substrates
Key advantages
- Single-component powder — no on-site proportioning of cement and sand
- Dry and wet tensile adhesion both well clear of the IS 15477 C1 minimums
- Thin 3 mm bed reduces material consumption against sand-cement mortar
- No pre-wetting of tiles required before fixing
- 0 mm slip per the standard test, useful on sloped bathroom and balcony floors
Limitations & considerations
- Cementitious substrates only — not for timber, plywood, metal, plastic or polyurethane membranes
- Not rated for flexible substrates such as fibre-cement sheeting or plasterboard
- Not suitable for moisture-sensitive natural stone or tiles
- Mixing and application restricted to a 5°C to 50°C site temperature window
- A floor-grade formulation — large-format or heavy vitrified tiling should be checked against UltraTech’s higher-adhesion Tilefixo variants
Selection & best practice
Treat the 30-minute open time as a hard limit, not a guideline — run a finger-skin test on the combed ridges before laying each section, and re-comb rather than tile over a film that’s already formed. Mix to the full 4:1 ratio, let it stand two minutes to mature, then remix; resist loosening a stiffening batch with extra water, since that’s exactly what pulls bond strength below the tested figures. Match the notch trowel to the tile size and confirm full, even coverage on the tile back in wet areas — partial coverage is the single biggest cause of hollow tiles later. Give the fixed floor a full 24 hours before foot traffic or grouting, and hold off tiling altogether if site temperatures are trending outside the 5°C to 50°C window.

How we position UltraTech Tilefixo CT
Within the Tilefixo family this is the standard floor-grade option — a step below the higher-adhesion and stone-rated variants further up the range, and priced accordingly for straightforward ceramic floor work. Specify it where tile size and substrate are conventional and the job needs IS 15477 C1 compliance without paying for capability the floor doesn’t require.
Fosroc Nitobond Tile Adhesive — Specifiers already standardised on Fosroc’s cementitious range, or documenting to BS 5980 rather than IS 15477, might choose Nitobond Tile Adhesive for straightforward interior ceramic floor and wall tiling in dry conditions.
