MC-Bauchemie Zentrival PL-Flex (C2T)
A flexible, cement-based Type 2 ‘T’ adhesive built for vitrified tiles, glass mosaics and natural stone — where an ordinary mortar bed cracks under thermal movement, this one flexes with it.
What is it?
A flexible, polymer-modified, hydraulically-setting powder tile adhesive certified to IS 15477:2019 Type 2 with Special Characteristic ‘T’ — the Indian-standard class broadly equivalent to EN 12004’s C2T (improved, slip-resistant, deformable) rating.
Where is it used?
Vitrified and fully-vitrified tiles, glass and ceramic mosaics, natural stone/marble cladding, gypsum and cement boards, insulation panels — on floors, walls, facades and even submerged surfaces, indoors or outdoors.
Why use it?
Plain site-mixed cement-sand mortar shrinks, hardens rigid, and needs pre-wetted tiles; it also loses strength over time as saponification sets in. PL-Flex’s polymer network gives it genuine flex, so large-format vitrified floors and facade tiling survive daily thermal expansion-contraction without hollow tiles or hairline cracking at the joints.
How is it applied?
Mix powder into water (never the reverse) at a 0.24-0.25 W/P ratio — 7.2-7.5 L per 30 kg bag — to a lump-free paste, let it mature ~5 minutes, then spread with a notched trowel in a 3-5 mm bed inside the 90-minute pot life. Tiles are positioned within the 25-30 minute open/adjustment window; joints are grouted only after 24 hours.
About MC-Bauchemie Zentrival PL-Flex (C2T)
Zentrival PL-Flex is MC-Bauchemie’s flexible tile and board adhesive — a cement-based powder modified with selected polymers so the cured bed can move with the tile instead of fighting it. Where a plain sand-cement mortar bed sets rigid and eventually telegraphs shrinkage cracks or hollow-sounding tiles, the polymer network in PL-Flex lets the adhesive absorb the small dimensional shifts that vitrified tiles, glass mosaics and stone go through as temperatures swing through an Indian day. MC-Bauchemie backs this with third-party lab data: the adhesive is certified to IS 15477:2019 Type 2 with Special Characteristic ‘T’ — the current Indian standard’s slip-resistant, deformable adhesive class, broadly the equivalent of EN 12004’s familiar C2T rating used across the Gulf and Southeast Asia.
For Space Arc’s Delhi NCR project sites, that matters on two fronts: large-format vitrified floor tiles in malls, hospitals and metro-adjacent buildings that see genuine thermal cycling, and facade or podium cladding where a rigid bed will eventually pop a tile off a parapet. PL-Flex’s non-saponifying formulation also means the bond doesn’t lose strength as lime by-products build up over the years — a known failure mode with cheap, unmodified tile mortars still common on Indian sites. It sits in MC-Bauchemie’s Zentrival range one step up from plain Zentrival PL, and one step below Zentrival HS, which is reserved for the heaviest stone and granite slabs.
The technical insight
The chemistry is straightforward but effective: Portland cement supplies the hydraulic set and early strength, while re-dispersible polymer powder forms a secondary film network through the cured matrix as the mix water evaporates. That film is what delivers the “flex” — it lets the bed elongate slightly under tensile and shear load instead of cracking outright, which MC-Bauchemie’s own data sheet documents as roughly 3.5-4x the bond strength of a conventional site-mixed mortar. The IS 15477 Type 2 ‘T’ rating specifically tests slip (sag) on vertical surfaces — PL-Flex measures 0.42 mm against a 0.5 mm ceiling, meaning wall and overhead tiles hold position without sliding down before the adhesive sets. Tensile adhesion of 1.38 N/mm² dry and 1.04 N/mm² wet, both comfortably clear of the IS minimum of 1.0 N/mm², confirm the bond holds up even once tiles are exposed to sustained dampness — the failure mode that trips up unmodified mortars fastest.
Where it is used
- Vitrified and fully-vitrified floor and wall tiling in commercial, residential and institutional projects
- Glass mosaic, ceramic mosaic and natural-stone (marble/granite) fixing in thin-bed applications up to 5 mm
- Facade and podium tile cladding exposed to daily thermal movement
- Bathroom, kitchen, terrace and other wet-area tiling, including underwater application such as pool tiling
- Re-tiling directly over sound, existing tiled surfaces
- Bonding gypsum boards, cement boards and polystyrene/insulation panels by the thin-bed method
- Slurry bond coat under tiles on absorbent substrates like plaster, marine plywood and cement-bound board
- Spot-bonding of aerated (gas) concrete blocks
Key advantages
- IS 15477:2019 Type 2 ‘T’ certified — lab-documented tensile and shear adhesion values, not just a marketing claim
- Non-saponifying polymer system: bond strength doesn’t fall away with age the way plain mortar does
- 0.42 mm slip value keeps wall and overhead tiles from sagging before the adhesive sets
- No pre-wetting of tiles or substrate required, cutting a full prep step out of the work cycle
- 90-minute pot life and 25-30 minute open/adjustment window give crews a workable rhythm even in peak Delhi heat
- Thin-bed method (3-5 mm) uses far less material than a conventional 12-20 mm mortar bed
- Rated for interior, exterior and submerged conditions from a single bag
- Reduces the iron-staining risk on light marble that plain cement mortar can cause
Limitations & considerations
- Rated for beds up to 5 mm — heavy marble, granite or thick stone slabs beyond that need MC-Bauchemie’s Zentrival HS instead
- The 90-minute pot life shortens further above roughly 30°C ambient, so batch sizes must stay small on peak-summer sites
- Supplied only in grey and white; no rapid-set or extra-white variant appears on the current data sheet
- 6-month shelf life from date of manufacture, so stock must be dated on arrival and rotated, not stockpiled
- Joints can only be grouted the next day (after ~24 hours) and need a separate product, Zentrival FM
- The published data sheet doesn’t report freeze-thaw or high-seismic-movement figures, so extreme cold-climate or high-movement joints should be reviewed with MC-Bauchemie’s technical team first
Selection & best practice
Keep the substrate structurally sound, free of laitance, paint residue, curing-compound film and grease; pre-wet the substrate only, never the tile itself. Add the powder to water — not the reverse — at 7.2-7.5 L per 30 kg bag, mix to a lump-free paste, and let it mature about 5 minutes before use so the polymers activate properly. Match the notch trowel to the tile size: a 6 mm notch for a 3 mm bed (3.5-4.0 kg/m²), 8 mm for a 4 mm bed, and 10 mm for a 5 mm bed on larger-format tiles. Work in patches under 1.5 m² so the adhesive doesn’t skin over before the tile is bedded, and only adjust tile position within the 25-30 minute window — never re-temper a paste that has already started to set by adding more water.

How we position MC-Bauchemie Zentrival PL-Flex (C2T)
Within MC-Bauchemie’s own Zentrival range, PL-Flex sits between plain Zentrival PL (an economy-grade, non-flexible tiling adhesive for standard indoor work) and Zentrival HS (built for heavy stone, granite and marble slabs); Zentrival FM completes the system as the flexible joint-filling grout applied the next day. Fosroc, Space Arc’s other principal, doesn’t run a comparable dedicated tile-adhesive line — its India portfolio concentrates on waterproofing, concrete repair, industrial flooring and grouts/anchors — so specifiers comparing this category typically weigh PL-Flex against other dedicated tiling brands (MYK Laticrete, Roff, Weber) rather than against a Fosroc product; Space Arc can walk through that comparison project by project.
