MC-Bauchemie MC Centrament Air 430
A liquid air-entraining admixture from MC-Bauchemie that engineers a stable microscopic bubble system into fresh concrete, delivering freeze-thaw resistance, better cohesion and a more workable, pumpable mix for pavements, decks and precast.
What is it?
A synthetic liquid air-entraining admixture (AEA) for concrete and mortar, conforming to IS 9103 and ASTM C260, dosed at the mixer to introduce controlled microscopic air.
Where is it used?
Highway and airport pavements, bridge decks, precast pipes and culverts, retaining walls and cold-region concrete where freeze-thaw cycling or de-icing salts attack the surface.
Why use it?
It builds a network of evenly spaced air voids that relieve internal ice pressure, cutting freeze-thaw scaling while improving cohesion, finishability and pumpability.
How is it applied?
Added to the mixing water or dispensed onto the aggregate at very low dosage, then batched by trial to lock the target fresh-air content before pours begin.
About MC-Bauchemie MC Centrament Air 430
MC Centrament Air 430 is MC-Bauchemie’s answer to one of the oldest durability problems in concrete: what happens when saturated concrete freezes. As free water in the capillary pores turns to ice it expands by roughly nine percent, and with nowhere to go that pressure spalls surfaces and cracks pavements apart cycle after cycle. Centrament Air 430 is a liquid synthetic air-entraining admixture that solves this at the mix-design stage. Batched into the concrete at a very low dosage, it develops a system of tiny, uniformly distributed spherical air voids throughout the paste. Those voids act as pressure-relief chambers, giving freezing water somewhere to expand into instead of tearing the matrix. The result is concrete that survives repeated freeze-thaw exposure and de-icing salts far better than an equivalent non-air-entrained mix.
The admixture complies with IS 9103 (Type B, air-entraining) and ASTM C260, so it sits comfortably inside Indian and international mix-design codes and EN 206 / ACI 318 durability frameworks. For engineers working across Delhi NCR, Himalayan road projects, high-altitude infrastructure and cold-store or export precast work, that compliance matters as much as the chemistry. Beyond the freeze-thaw story, the entrained air acts like a ball-bearing lubricant between aggregate particles, so the fresh mix becomes noticeably more cohesive, easier to place and less prone to bleeding and segregation. Space Arc Engineering supplies Centrament Air 430 as an authorised MC-Bauchemie distributor with trial-batch support, because with any AEA the number on the datasheet only becomes useful once it is calibrated to your specific cement, aggregates and site temperature.
The technical insight
Air entrainment is not the same as accidental entrapped air. Entrapped air voids are large, irregular and randomly placed, and they only weaken concrete. What Centrament Air 430 creates is a deliberate, engineered void system: microscopic bubbles, typically well under a millimetre across, spaced closely enough that no point in the hardened paste is far from a void. The parameter that governs freeze-thaw performance is the spacing factor, and a well-entrained mix aims for a spacing factor below roughly 200 microns, verifiable by ASTM C457 petrographic analysis on cores. When freezing water is pushed out of a capillary, it only has to travel this short distance before it reaches an empty bubble to expand into, so hydraulic pressure never builds to the point that fractures the paste. The admixture works by lowering the surface tension of the mixing water, allowing the mechanical shearing action of the mixer to whip in and stabilise these bubbles. Because the mechanism is surface-active rather than reactive, the actual air yield is extremely sensitive to cement fineness and alkali content, aggregate grading and fines, mix temperature, slump, and mixing time, which is exactly why field trials are non-negotiable. The trade-off to respect is strength: every additional one percent of air typically costs around five percent of compressive strength, so the target is a genuine sweet spot, enough air for durability, never more than the design can spare.
Where it is used
- Concrete pavements for highways, expressways and service roads exposed to freeze-thaw and de-icing salts
- Bridge decks and approach slabs where surface scaling and salt attack shorten service life
- Airport runway, taxiway and apron concrete subject to thermal cycling
- Precast concrete pipes, culverts and box sections for cold-region drainage and infrastructure
- Retaining walls, basement and other buried concrete facing saturated, freezing ground
- Cold-weather masonry mortars needing improved workability and board life
- High-altitude and Himalayan project concrete where diurnal freeze-thaw is routine
- Cohesive, pumpable mixes where reduced bleeding and segregation are the primary goal
Key advantages
- Delivers proven freeze-thaw and de-icing-salt resistance by building a closely spaced microscopic void system
- Improves workability, cohesion and finishability so mixes place and pump more easily
- Reduces bleeding and segregation, giving more uniform, denser surfaces
- Chloride-free chemistry that will not promote reinforcement corrosion
- Conforms to IS 9103 Type B and ASTM C260, fitting Indian and international durability codes
- Effective at very low dosage, so it adds durability without materially changing the mix economics
- Compatible with typical MC-Bauchemie plasticisers and superplasticisers in a designed system
- Verifiable in the hardened state via air-void and spacing-factor analysis for QA on critical works
Limitations & considerations
- Air yield is highly sensitive to cement type, fly ash carbon content, aggregate fines, temperature and slump, so site trials are mandatory
- Each additional 1% of entrained air reduces compressive strength by roughly 5%, so over-dosing carries a real penalty
- Over-mixing, prolonged agitation or extended haul times can strip out entrained air and lower the in-place content
- It is an air-entraining agent only, not a water reducer or superplasticiser, and does not replace them
- Interactions with certain high-range water reducers can destabilise the air system unless the combination is trial-verified
- Measured fresh air content should be confirmed at the point of placement, not just at the batching plant
Selection & best practice
Always establish dosage by trial batching with your actual cement, aggregates, supplementary materials and any co-dosed admixtures, at the temperature and slump you expect on site, rather than adopting a datasheet figure directly. Add Centrament Air 430 to the mixing water or the wet mix, never to dry cement, and keep the addition point and mixing time consistent from batch to batch, since both affect the final air content. Measure fresh air using a calibrated pressure air meter at the point of discharge or placement, and set acceptance limits around your target (commonly 4-6% total air for freeze-thaw exposure) so the plant can adjust dose in real time. Guard against air loss during transport and pumping by controlling haul time and avoiding unnecessary re-tempering. On durability-critical structures, verify the hardened air-void spacing factor by petrographic analysis on cores. Store the product in sealed original containers, protect it from frost, and re-agitate before use if it has stood for a long period.

How we position MC-Bauchemie MC Centrament Air 430
Centrament Air 430 sits within MC-Bauchemie’s Centrament Air family of air-entraining agents and pairs naturally with the brand’s water reducers and superplasticisers, where you would combine it with an MC-Bauchemie plasticiser or PCE superplasticiser to hit workability and strength targets while it handles the air-void system. For specifiers standardised on Fosroc, the equivalent role is filled by Conplast AEA, and Space Arc supplies both families along with complementary curing compounds and repair mortars, so an air-entrained pavement or deck can be detailed end to end from a single distributor. Where the brief is durability rather than only freeze-thaw, discuss it with our team alongside integral waterproofing admixtures and corrosion inhibitors so the mix design addresses the full exposure picture.
Fosroc Conplast AEA — A specifier already standardised on the Fosroc system may prefer Conplast AEA, a chloride-free neutralised vinsol-resin air-entraining admixture that fills the same freeze-thaw durability role.
