Fosroc Conplast SP430 Polvo
Chloride-free powder (dry) superplasticiser based on sulphonated naphthalene polymers — engineered for high early strength, precast concrete and dry pre-bagged mixes where carrying liquid admixture is impractical.
What is it?
A powder (dry) form, chloride-free superplasticiser / high-range water reducer based on selected sulphonated naphthalene polymers. The ‘Polvo’ (Spanish for powder) grade is the dry version of Fosroc’s Conplast SP430 admixture — a brown powder that disperses instantly in water to give the same high water reduction and strength gain as the liquid product.
Where is it used?
Precast and prestressed concrete, high-early-strength elements, factory-blended dry mortars and dry-mix concrete in silos, shotcrete/gunite, screeds, and any situation where a dry admixture is easier to store, transport or batch than a liquid.
Why use it?
It lets producers reduce water demand sharply, lift early and ultimate compressive strengths, speed up precast stripping times and improve durability through lower permeability — all from a stable powder that avoids freezing, leakage and the logistics of bulk liquid.
How is it applied?
Dosed as a dry powder by weight of cementitious material (typically 0.3–1.5% by weight of cement), blended into the dry mix or pre-dispersed in the gauging water. Optimum dosage is fixed by site trial mixes with the actual materials. Never combine different admixtures before adding them to the mix.
About Fosroc Conplast SP430 Polvo
Fosroc Conplast SP430 Polvo is the powder (dry) version of the well-established Conplast SP430 superplasticiser. The name “Polvo” is Spanish for “powder”, reflecting its origin in Fosroc’s international (Latin American / European) range, and it carries the same core chemistry as the familiar liquid grade: a chloride-free, high-range water-reducing admixture built on selected sulphonated naphthalene polymers. Where the standard SP430 is a brown liquid, the Polvo grade is a free-flowing brown powder that disperses instantly the moment it contacts water, so it can be dry-blended into bagged products or dissolved in the gauging water on site.
The functional purpose is the same as any quality superplasticiser: the sulphonated naphthalene molecules adsorb onto cement grains and deflocculate them, releasing trapped mixing water and dramatically improving particle dispersion. The practical pay-off can be taken three ways. Hold the water and you get a large boost in workability (flowing, self-levelling, easily pumped concrete). Hold the workability and cut the water and you achieve major water reduction — commonly in the region of 20–25% — for high-strength, low-permeability, durable concrete. Or balance the two for a workable yet water-reduced mix. Because strength gains appear strongly at early ages without raising cement content, the Polvo grade is especially valued in precast yards, where faster mould turnaround and earlier stripping directly drive output.
For Indian contractors, consultants and precast manufacturers, the headline advantage of the powder format is logistics and stability. A dry admixture does not freeze, will not leak in transit, occupies less volume per active dose, and integrates cleanly into pre-bagged dry concrete, repair mortars and silo-fed dry mixes — formats increasingly used on remote and high-rise sites across Delhi NCR and Pan-India. Note that the powder is a distinct grade from the liquid: dosage is expressed by weight of cement rather than litres per 100 kg, so the two are not interchangeable on a like-for-like volume basis.
The technical insight
The chemistry is sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde (SNF) condensate — a second-generation superplasticiser that works by electrostatic repulsion. Anionic sulphonate groups coat the cement particles, giving them a like-charge that pushes them apart and breaks down the flocs that normally trap mixing water. That freed water becomes available for workability or can be designed out of the mix entirely. SNF admixtures like SP430 give very high initial water reduction and a strong early dispersing effect, but the workability life is finite (typically 30–60 minutes depending on temperature) — this is the trade-off versus newer polycarboxylate ether (PCE) systems, which hold slump longer at lower dose. The supplied liquid SP430 is documented as chloride-free (Nil to BS 5075), specific gravity typically 1.20 at 20°C, with less than 2% additional entrained air at normal dosage and a low alkali content (typically below 72 g Na2O equivalent per litre). Compliance is stated against BS 5075 Part 3 and ASTM C494 as both Type A (water-reducing) and Type F (high-range water-reducing). For the Polvo grade the active chemistry is identical; the practical difference is that the surfactant is delivered dry, so dosage is set by mass of active powder against cement weight rather than by liquid volume, and the producer must ensure full dissolution and even dispersion before relying on the rated water reduction.
Where it is used
- Precast and prestressed concrete elements (beams, panels, pipes, pavers) needing high early strength for faster demoulding
- Factory pre-blended dry-mix concrete and repair mortars supplied in bags or silos
- High-strength, low water:cement ratio structural concrete without excessive cement content
- Flowing, easily-placed and self-compacting concrete for congested reinforcement and complex formwork
- Shotcrete and gunite where a dry-batched admixture suits the process
- Floor screeds, where lower water content speeds drying and reduces shrinkage cracking
- Pumped concrete for high-rise and long-distance placement, improving pumpability and reducing segregation
- Remote-site and export projects where dry admixture is preferred over liquid for transport and storage stability
Key advantages
- Chloride-free — safe for prestressed and steel-reinforced concrete
- Powder format resists freezing, will not leak, and stores/transports more compactly than liquid
- Disperses instantly in water for easy blending into dry mixes or gauging water
- High water reduction (commonly ~20–25%) for high-strength, dense, durable concrete
- Strong early-age strength gain enabling faster precast stripping and mould turnaround
- Improves ultimate strength and lowers permeability, enhancing long-term durability
- Integrates cleanly into pre-bagged dry products and silo-fed dry-mix concrete
- Compatible with PFA, GGBFS and microsilica blended cements
- Compatible with other Fosroc admixtures when each is added to the mix separately
Limitations & considerations
- As an SNF-based superplasticiser, slump/workability retention is limited (typically ~30–60 min) compared with modern PCE admixtures — plan placement accordingly
- Dosage is by weight of cement, so it is NOT a direct volume-for-volume substitute for the liquid SP430
- Requires thorough dissolution/dispersion; inadequate mixing can give uneven performance
- Optimum dosage must be confirmed by site trial mixes with the actual materials and conditions
- Overdosing can cause excessive retardation and bleeding — supervision is essential
- Powder must be kept dry and sealed; exposure to moisture in storage can cause caking
- Powder (Polvo) grade availability and exact pack sizes vary by region and should be confirmed for the Indian market with Fosroc / the authorised distributor
Selection & best practice
Always establish the correct dose through trial mixes using your actual cement, aggregates, supplementary cementitious materials and ambient temperatures before scaling to production — start within the typical 0.3–1.5% by weight of cement window. Ensure the powder is fully dissolved or evenly dry-blended so the rated water reduction is achieved consistently. Keep the product sealed and dry in storage to prevent caking. Where SP430 Polvo is added alongside another admixture (for example an air-entrainer or retarder), add each one to the concrete separately — never pre-mix admixtures together. Because workability life is limited with naphthalene-based systems, coordinate batching, transport and placing so concrete is placed and compacted within the workable window, and consider a PCE-based product (or a Fosroc Auracast / Conplast retarding grade) if extended slump retention is the priority.

How we position Fosroc Conplast SP430 Polvo
Within Fosroc’s range, Conplast SP430 Polvo sits as the dry, high-early-strength superplasticiser — the powder counterpart to the liquid Conplast SP430 and its variants (SP430 G8, SP430 DIS, SP430ES2). It is a naphthalene-based (SNF) product, which makes it a strong, economical water reducer for precast and high-strength work, but where long slump retention or self-compacting performance is needed, Fosroc’s polycarboxylate-based Auracast / Conplast SP500-series admixtures are the more appropriate choice; for set control it pairs with Conplast retarders, and for waterproof concrete it is often used alongside Conplast WL or an integral system. Against the wider Indian market, comparable superplasticisers include Sika’s Sikament / SikaPlast and ViscoCrete ranges, BASF/Master Builders Solutions (MBS) MasterRheobuild and MasterGlenium, Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) admixtures, and STP (Sika-group) products. SNF powders like SP430 Polvo are typically positioned as cost-effective high-early-strength performers, while PCE-based competitors (ViscoCrete, MasterGlenium) lead on extended workability and lower dosage — the right pick depends on whether early strength and economy or slump retention and flow are the priority.
