What is it?

A black, plasticised bituminous sealing compound of medium-hard solid consistency, formulated by STP primarily to seal lead-acid battery cases and covers.

Where is it used?

Automotive and industrial lead-acid battery manufacturing and repair, plus general industrial bituminous sealing where a tough, hot-pourable bitumen compound is called for.

Why use it?

It combines high softening point, strong adhesion and mechanical strength with low contraction on cooling, so the seal stays tight and crack-free once set.

How is it applied?

Melted and poured hot into the joint or press-fitted while workable, then allowed to cool and solidify into a continuous, void-free seal.

About STP ShaliSeal HB

STP ShaliSeal HB is a plasticised bituminous sealing compound made by STP Limited, one of India’s oldest names in bitumen technology and construction chemicals. Unlike the elastomeric joint sealants most contractors reach for on a building site, ShaliSeal HB belongs to a specialist family: hot-applied bitumen compounds developed to seal lead-acid battery cases, where the cell must be closed off permanently against acid and vibration. It arrives as a medium-hard black solid that is melted and flowed into place, cooling to form a rigid yet adhesive seal that grips the battery casing and its terminals.

For engineers and procurement teams, the appeal is a dependable, economical material that does one job extremely well. The plasticiser keeps the set compound from becoming brittle, so it tolerates the mechanical knocks and thermal cycling a working battery sees without cracking away from the case. Because it is bitumen-based, it is inherently resistant to the dilute sulphuric acid electrolyte inside the cell and to the moisture and fumes around it. Space Arc Engineering supplies ShaliSeal HB to battery manufacturers, reconditioners and industrial workshops across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, alongside technical guidance on melting temperature and handling.

The technical insight

The performance of a battery sealing bitumen comes down to a balancing act that ShaliSeal HB is formulated to win. A raw high-softening-point bitumen would give you heat resistance but tends to be brittle and to shrink as it cools, pulling away from the casing and opening leak paths. A soft bitumen adheres and flows well but creeps and slumps at the temperatures a battery reaches in service. ShaliSeal HB is plasticised to hold the middle ground: it keeps a usefully high softening point so the seal does not sag or run when the battery warms, while the plasticiser preserves enough give that the set compound resists cracking under vibration and thermal movement. Just as important, the formulation is designed for low contraction on cooling, so as the poured compound solidifies it stays in intimate contact with the battery case and terminals rather than shrinking back. The result is a continuous, void-free bond that combines adhesion, mechanical strength and acid resistance in one economical, hot-applied material.

Where it is used

  • Sealing the case-to-cover joint on automotive lead-acid batteries during manufacture
  • Sealing industrial and stationary lead-acid battery cells and blocks
  • Re-sealing batteries during reconditioning and repair work
  • Bedding and sealing battery terminals and inter-cell connectors against acid ingress
  • General industrial hot-pour bituminous sealing of gaps and joints
  • Encapsulating and sealing electrical connections where a bitumen compound is specified
  • Filling and sealing small industrial cavities that require a tough, acid-resistant bituminous plug

Key advantages

  • Purpose-formulated for lead-acid battery sealing rather than adapted from a general-purpose bitumen
  • Combines high softening point with adhesion and mechanical strength in a single compound
  • Plasticised so the set seal resists cracking under vibration and thermal cycling
  • Low contraction on cooling keeps the compound in tight contact with the casing
  • Inherent resistance to dilute sulphuric acid electrolyte, moisture and fumes
  • Simple hot-melt application needs no mixing, primers or catalysts
  • Economical material cost for a high-volume, repeatable production process
  • Backed by STP’s long track record in bitumen-based sealing technology

Limitations & considerations

  • A rigid, hot-poured bitumen, not an elastomeric sealant for wide-movement construction joints
  • Requires controlled heating and melting equipment, plus care against fumes and burns during pouring
  • Not intended for structural waterproofing, expansion joints or facade sealing on buildings
  • Black colour and bituminous finish are functional, with no decorative or colour-matched options
  • Set seal can soften if exposed to temperatures approaching its softening point, so service-temperature limits must be respected
  • Performance depends on clean, dry, grease-free surfaces and correct pouring temperature

Selection & best practice

Melt ShaliSeal HB in a thermostatically controlled heater to a fluid, pourable state without overheating, since excessive temperature can degrade the bitumen and its plasticiser. Make sure the battery case, cover and terminal areas are clean, dry and free of oil, grease or electrolyte before sealing, as contamination is the usual cause of poor adhesion. Pour the molten compound steadily into the joint to displace air and avoid trapping voids, then allow it to cool and solidify undisturbed so it sets in intimate contact with the casing. Work in a well-ventilated area with appropriate heat-resistant gloves and eye protection, and keep the melt away from any open flame. For production-scale sealing, confirm the correct application temperature and pour rate with Space Arc’s technical team, and always follow the current STP technical data sheet and safety data sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Is STP ShaliSeal HB a construction joint sealant?
No. Despite the ShaliSeal name shared with STP’s construction sealants, ShaliSeal HB is a specialist bituminous compound for sealing lead-acid batteries and similar industrial hot-pour work. For building movement joints you would use an elastomeric sealant instead.
How is ShaliSeal HB applied?
It is supplied as a medium-hard black solid that is melted in a controlled heater and poured hot into the joint, or press-fitted while still workable. It then cools and solidifies into a continuous, adhesive seal, with no mixing, primer or catalyst required.
Why is it suitable for lead-acid batteries specifically?
It is formulated to balance a high softening point with adhesion, mechanical strength and low contraction on cooling, and its bitumen base resists the dilute sulphuric acid electrolyte. That combination keeps the seal tight and crack-free through vibration and thermal cycling.
Does the sealed compound crack or become brittle over time?
The compound is plasticised precisely to avoid the brittleness of raw high-softening-point bitumen, so the set seal retains enough flexibility to resist cracking under normal service vibration and temperature swings.
What surface preparation does it need?
Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of oil, grease and electrolyte before sealing. Contamination is the most common cause of weak adhesion, so degrease and dry the case and terminal areas first.
Can Space Arc supply ShaliSeal HB across India with technical support?
Yes. As an authorised STP distributor, Space Arc Engineering supplies ShaliSeal HB across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, and can advise on melting temperature, handling and safe application, with the current STP data sheets on request.

How we position STP ShaliSeal HB

STP ShaliSeal HB sits in a specialist niche of our sealants and joint-treatment range: hot-applied bituminous compounds for lead-acid battery and industrial sealing, rather than building-fabric jointing. Within the STP family, do not confuse it with STP’s construction sealants that share the ShaliSeal name, such as the polysulphide ShaliSeal PS range for concrete movement joints, or ShaliTex Sealing Compound, a bitumen-based sealant for concrete joints exposed to temperature variation. Those are the products to specify for civil and waterproofing joints, while ShaliSeal HB is the right call for battery and industrial hot-pour sealing. For elastomeric building joints across our other brands, we also carry polyurethane and polysulphide sealants from Fosroc, Sika and Dr. Fixit. Fosroc does not offer a lead-acid battery sealing compound, so there is no direct Fosroc equivalent to ShaliSeal HB; talk to our technical team and we will match the correct sealant chemistry to your actual joint and service conditions.
