What is it?

Fosroc Nitoseal AS is a ready-to-use, one-component, water-based (acrylic emulsion) joint sealant. It is low-modulus and flexible, cures by loss of water to form a firm yet movement-tolerant seal, and can be over-painted or papered after curing.

Where is it used?

Used mainly for internal, low-movement sealing and finishing work – between plasterboard panels, around cornices and decorative ceiling panels, and to fill cracks and perimeter gaps at skirtings, door frames and window reveals.

Why use it?

It is the practical choice where a paintable, decorator-friendly, gun-grade sealant is needed: easy to tool and clean up with water, fast-setting, paint-over capable and well-adhered to most common interior substrates without the solvent odour of reactive-cure sealants.

How is it applied?

Gun-applied from a cartridge into a clean, dry, dust-free joint, tooled to a neat finish, then left to cure by water release before painting. Backer rod or bond-breaker tape is used on wider gaps to control depth and avoid three-sided adhesion.

About Fosroc Nitoseal AS

Fosroc Nitoseal AS belongs to the Nitoseal family of joint sealants and sits at the general-purpose, interior end of that range. Where Nitoseal MS (silyl-modified polymer), Nitoseal PU (polyurethane) and Thioflex (polysulphide) sealants are engineered for structural movement joints, water-retaining structures and trafficked or chemically exposed conditions, Nitoseal AS is a one-component, water-based acrylic sealant intended for sealing, pointing and crack-filling in building interiors where movement is modest and a clean, paintable finish matters. The “AS” designation reflects this acrylic-sealant character. The product is listed on Fosroc’s official joint-sealants range and is available in the Indian market, which makes it relevant to fit-out, drywall and finishing packages across Delhi NCR and Pan-India projects. Because it is supplied ready-mixed in cartridge form, there is no on-site mixing, no induction period and no two-part ratio to manage – the applicator simply guns it into the prepared joint and tools it off. It cures by releasing water to the air rather than by chemical reaction, so it is low-odour and water-washable while wet, then develops a flexible, low-modulus seal that accommodates the small thermal and settlement movements typical of internal partitions, ceilings and architraves. Its defining advantage over silicone for interior work is that it accepts paint and wallpaper, allowing a seamless decorated finish, which is exactly why drywall, false-ceiling and joinery trades reach for an acrylic sealant of this type. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, Space Arc Engineering positions Nitoseal AS as the everyday interior sealant in a specification, with the higher-grade Nitoseal and Thioflex products reserved for genuine movement, immersion or external duty.

The technical insight

The behaviour of Nitoseal AS follows directly from its chemistry. As a water-based acrylic emulsion, it cures by evaporation and absorption of water, not by a chemical reaction – this is a single-stage, physical cure, so cure speed is governed by temperature, humidity and joint depth rather than by a fixed pot life. The practical consequence is that it should not be applied where it could be rained on, immersed, or subjected to standing water before it has fully dried, and it cures more slowly in cold, humid or poorly ventilated interiors. Being low-modulus, it develops low stress at the bond line for a given movement, which is why it tolerates the minor thermal and shrinkage movement of plasterboard joints, cornice lines and timber-to-masonry junctions without tearing the substrate or itself. However, acrylic sealants in general carry a modest movement accommodation factor – they are not designed for the high-movement structural joints that an MS-polymer or polyurethane handles – so the deciding factor on any joint is honest movement calculation, not just adhesion. Joint geometry remains critical: a width-to-depth ratio in the region of 2:1 for typical joints, a backer rod or bond-breaker tape to enforce two-sided (not three-sided) adhesion, and clean, dry, sound substrates. Painting should wait until the sealant has skinned and cured sufficiently, and a flexible/emulsion paint system bridges minor movement better than a hard, brittle film. For any binding specification, the project-specific Fosroc Technical Data Sheet for the supplied grade should be confirmed for the exact movement class, cure schedule and substrate priming notes.

Where it is used

  • Sealing butt and angle joints between plasterboard / gypsum board panels before skim and paint
  • Pointing around cornices, coving and decorative ceiling panels
  • Filling and sealing cracks in internal plastered walls before redecoration
  • Perimeter sealing of skirting boards, architraves and dado rails against the wall line
  • Sealing the junction between door / window frames and internal reveals
  • Closing gaps where internal partitions meet ceilings, columns and adjacent walls
  • General interior pointing and gap-filling in fit-out and refurbishment work
  • Pre-decoration crack and joint filling that needs to be over-painted or papered

Key advantages

  • One-component and ready to use – no site mixing, no induction time, no ratio errors
  • Water-based and low odour – suited to occupied or enclosed interior spaces
  • Fully paintable and papered over – allows a seamless decorated finish
  • Low-modulus and flexible – tolerates the minor movement of internal joints without cracking
  • Excellent adhesion to most common building substrates without aggressive priming
  • Fast setting, so finishing and decorating can follow quickly in good conditions
  • Easy to gun, tool and finish; tools and overspill clean up with water while wet
  • Available in the Indian market through authorised Fosroc distribution

Limitations & considerations

  • Designed for low-movement interior joints – not a high-movement structural or expansion-joint sealant
  • Cures by water loss, so it is unsuitable for permanently wet, immersed or continuously damp locations
  • Not intended for external facade weather-sealing or water-retaining structures – use Nitoseal MS / PU or Thioflex there
  • Slower to cure in cold, humid or poorly ventilated conditions and at depth
  • Should not be applied to frozen, damp or contaminated substrates, or where rain can wash uncured material
  • Limited chemical, fuel and abrasion resistance compared with polyurethane / polysulphide grades
  • Not a substitute for a fire-rated joint sealant where a fire-resistance rating is specified
  • Exact movement class, colour range and pack sizes must be confirmed against the current project-specific Fosroc TDS

Selection & best practice

Treat Nitoseal AS as an interior, low-movement, decorative sealant and design the joint accordingly. First confirm the joint is genuinely low-movement; if real structural or thermal movement is expected, specify an MS-polymer or polyurethane Nitoseal instead. Substrates must be clean, dry, sound and free of dust, oil, old sealant and loose material. Aim for a width-to-depth ratio of roughly 2:1 on typical joints, and on deeper or wider gaps fit a closed-cell backer rod (or bond-breaker tape on shallow joints) so the sealant bonds on two faces only and is never forced into three-sided adhesion, which would tear it under movement. Gun the sealant in a continuous bead, tool it firmly to wet out both faces and leave a neat concave profile, and strike off excess with a water-dampened tool before it skins. Allow adequate cure – longer in cold, humid or unventilated rooms – before over-painting, and prefer a flexible emulsion paint over the joint so the paint film can follow minor movement. Protect freshly applied sealant from water, rain and condensation until it has dried through. For specification, contract or QA records, always work to the current Fosroc Technical Data Sheet for the exact grade supplied, and confirm primer requirements on any unusual or porous substrate with Space Arc’s technical team.

Frequently asked questions

What type of sealant is Fosroc Nitoseal AS?
It is a one-component, water-based acrylic joint sealant. It is low-modulus and flexible, cures by releasing water to the air, and forms a firm but movement-tolerant seal that can be over-painted or papered.
Can Nitoseal AS be painted over?
Yes. A key benefit of Nitoseal AS is that it can be over-painted and even papered once cured, which lets you achieve a seamless decorated finish over plasterboard joints, cornices and cracks. For best results, allow it to cure fully and use a flexible emulsion paint over the joint.
Where should Nitoseal AS be used – and where should it not?
Use it for internal, low-movement sealing and finishing: plasterboard joints, cornice and ceiling-panel pointing, wall cracks, and gaps around skirtings, doors and windows. Do not use it for high-movement structural or expansion joints, external weather-sealing, or permanently wet, immersed or water-retaining conditions – for those, use Nitoseal MS, Nitoseal PU or Thioflex grades instead.
Does Nitoseal AS need a primer and a backer rod?
On most clean, sound, dry interior substrates it adheres well without aggressive priming, but on porous or unusual substrates you should confirm priming against the Fosroc TDS. On wider or deeper joints, fit a closed-cell backer rod (or bond-breaker tape on shallow joints) so the sealant bonds on two faces only and is not forced into three-sided adhesion.
How is Nitoseal AS different from Nitoseal MS or polyurethane sealants?
Nitoseal AS is a water-based acrylic for interior, low-movement, paintable finishing work – it is decorator-friendly and low-odour but not high-movement or water-immersion rated. Nitoseal MS (silyl-modified polymer) and Nitoseal PU (polyurethane) are reactive-cure sealants built for higher movement, external exposure, trafficking and wet conditions. Choose AS for interior finishing and the MS/PU/Thioflex grades for performance movement joints.
Is Nitoseal AS available in India through Space Arc?
Yes. Nitoseal AS is part of Fosroc’s listed joint-sealant range and is available in the Indian market. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator for Delhi NCR and Pan-India, can supply it and advise on the correct grade and joint design for your project. How we position Fosroc Nitoseal AS

Within Fosroc’s Nitoseal joint-sealant family, Nitoseal AS is the interior, water-based acrylic option – the everyday sealant for paintable, low-movement finishing work rather than a performance movement-joint product. It complements rather than competes with the rest of the range: specify Nitoseal MS100 / MS300 / MS600 (silyl-modified polymer) for high-movement, weatherproof and immersed-condition joints, Nitoseal PU40 / PU220 (polyurethane) for tough, abrasion- and chemical-exposed movement joints, Thioflex 600 (two-part polysulphide) for civil and water-retaining structures, and Colpor 200PF for trafficked pavement and carriageway joints. Among general-purpose acrylic decorator’s sealants, credible alternatives an engineer may encounter include Sika’s acrylic sealants (alongside the Sikaflex reactive range for movement joints), MBCC/Master Builders Solutions MasterSeal sealants, and STP (Sika India) products; for interior, paintable, low-movement work these sit in a similar performance bracket, while reactive MS-polymer and polyurethane grades remain the correct choice for genuine structural movement, external facades and wet environments. Space Arc Engineering’s recommendation is to use Nitoseal AS where its strengths – paintability, ease of finishing and low odour – add real value, and to step up to the reactive Nitoseal, Thioflex or Colpor grades the moment a joint demands true movement accommodation, weather exposure or immersion. Note: precise movement class, colour range, pack sizes and standards compliance should always be confirmed against the current project-specific Fosroc Technical Data Sheet for the supplied grade.
