STP AquaShield
APP-modified, glass-fibre reinforced torch-applied bituminous membrane in 2, 3 and 4 mm for roofs, basements, podiums and buried structures.
What is it?
A factory-made, atactic-polypropylene (APP) modified bituminous sheet membrane reinforced with a non-woven glass-fibre core, faced with a meltable polyethylene film for torch fusion.
Where is it used?
Roof slabs, terraces, podium decks, basements and underground car parks, swimming pools and water-retaining tanks, and bridge and tunnel decks.
Why use it?
It lays a uniform, factory-controlled waterproofing skin far faster than multi-coat liquid systems, with heat-welded laps that fuse the sheets into one continuous barrier.
How is it applied?
Torch-fused onto a ShaliTex-primed substrate: the flame softens the underside until the embossing disappears, then the roll is pressed down so a bead of bitumen extrudes at every lap.
About STP AquaShield
STP AquaShield is a pre-fabricated waterproofing membrane built around a non-woven glass-fibre mat that is saturated and coated with bitumen modified by atactic polypropylene (APP). The APP modification is what separates it from ordinary oxidised bitumen felt: it widens the workable temperature band, holds the sheet stable in Indian summer heat, and keeps it flexible enough to follow the normal movement of a structure without cracking. The torch face carries a thin polyethylene film that melts away during application, exposing molten bitumen that bonds the sheet to the deck and to the sheet beside it. It is supplied in 2 mm, 3 mm and 4 mm grades so the specifier can match thickness to exposure and traffic.
Because the membrane is manufactured under factory control, every square metre carries the same thickness and the same bitumen loading, which removes the coverage guesswork that dogs brush- and roller-applied systems. On site the sheets are heat-welded rather than merely overlapped, so the finished build-up behaves as a single monolithic layer with no cold joints for water to track through. That makes AquaShield a natural fit for structural and buried waterproofing where re-access is difficult and a coating that must be reapplied every few years is not an option. Space Arc Engineering supplies it as an authorised STP distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with the correct primer, protection and detailing accessories from the same STP system.
The technical insight
The performance comes from marrying two materials that compensate for each other’s weaknesses. Straight bitumen waterproofs well but creeps in heat and shatters in cold; blending in atactic polypropylene lifts the softening point and adds elastomeric-style recovery, so the compound resists flow at 120°C for two hours yet does not crack down to +2°C. The non-woven glass-fibre core then supplies dimensional stability and tear resistance the bitumen alone cannot give, anchoring tensile strength at 450 ± 50 N/5 cm longitudinally in the 3 mm-and-above grade. The magic on site is in the torching: heating the polyethylene film until the embossing disappears is the visual cue that the bitumen has reached its softening point, and rolling forward while pressing extrudes a bead of molten bitumen at every edge. That bead is the proof of a continuous, fused seal, which is why heat-welded laps outperform a mechanically lapped or adhered joint in a buried or ponding-water condition.
Where it is used
- Waterproofing medium-to-large roof slabs on domestic, commercial and industrial buildings
- Terraces and podium decks, finished with a protective screed or tiles for foot traffic
- Basements and underground car parks against ground-water ingress
- Swimming pools and other water-retaining structures
- Bridge decks and tunnels requiring structural, buried waterproofing
- Damp-proofing courses beneath walls and slabs
- Base or intermediate layer within a multi-layer membrane build-up
- Protected roofing systems where the membrane is overlaid rather than exposed
Key advantages
- Factory-controlled thickness and bitumen loading give consistent coverage with no site mixing
- Heat-welded laps fuse the sheets into a single monolithic waterproofing layer
- Glass-fibre core delivers high tensile and tear strength with good dimensional stability
- APP modification resists both hot-climate flow and cold-weather cracking
- Much faster to lay over large areas than multi-coat liquid systems
- Proven resistance to ageing and weathering when applied within a correct system
- Suitable for buried and structural duties where re-access is impractical
- Contains no added lead, mercury or chromium compounds
Limitations & considerations
- Requires trained torch applicators and safe hot-works conditions, so it cannot be used where open flame is prohibited
- The plain PE-film grade is not UV-stable and must be protected or overlaid for permanent exposure
- Bond fails on damp or contaminated concrete; substrate moisture must be below 5% and new concrete cured at least 28 days
- Application is restricted to a +5°C to +45°C substrate and ambient window, and must not be done during rain or extreme temperatures
- Detailing at upstands, drain mouths and penetrations is labour-intensive and must be executed correctly to avoid leaks
- Torching demands correct fall grading and a sound, primed surface; laitance and friable concrete must be removed first
Selection & best practice
Cure new concrete for at least 28 days, then mechanically abrade the surface to strip laitance and open the texture, removing all loose or weak material. Build the correct falls with PCC dosed with ShaliPlast IW and keep every drain mouth at least 15 mm below deck level. Apply ShaliTex Primer at 0.3 L/m² and let it dry tack-free. Unroll AquaShield to align it, re-roll to the start, then torch the primed deck and the sheet underside together until the embossing disappears, rolling forward under firm pressure so a bead of bitumen extrudes at every edge. Maintain a minimum 100 mm overlap at end laps and 75 mm at side laps, carry the membrane at least 150 mm (6 inches) into drain pipes, and turn it up parapets to envelope the building. Finish non-trafficable areas with SuperSilverShield; for foot traffic, overlay with 50 mm PCC over a spot-bonded ShaliGeoText 120/150 GSM separation layer.

Industry use cases
Residential & Commercial Roofing
Waterproofs medium-to-large roof slabs and terraces, with a SuperSilverShield finish for non-trafficable roofs or a protective screed where foot traffic is expected.
Basements & Below-Grade
Provides buried, structural waterproofing to basements and underground car parks where liquid coatings would be impractical to reapply.
Podiums & Landscaped Decks
Forms the tanking layer under podium decks, protected by PCC over a ShaliGeoText separation layer before landscaping or paving loads are applied.
Water-Retaining Structures
Lines swimming pools and water tanks with a continuous heat-welded barrier that resists a positive pressure head.
Infrastructure
Waterproofs bridge decks and tunnels where high tensile and tear strength and long-term buried performance are essential.

How we position STP AquaShield
STP AquaShield sits in the torch-applied membrane tier of the STP waterproofing range and is deployed as a complete system with its stablemates: ShaliTex Primer for adhesion, ShaliPlast IW for the screed and falls, ShaliGeoText as the separation layer, and SuperSilverShield as the reflective protective coat. Where a project needs a heavier-duty preformed sheet, STP’s SuperThermoLay APP membrane is the natural step up. For projects that cannot accommodate hot works, look instead to a liquid-applied or crystalline system rather than a torch membrane. Space Arc supplies AquaShield alongside its Fosroc, Dr. Fixit and other brand lines, so the choice can be driven by the specification rather than by a single manufacturer.
