STP ShaliTex Primer

The solvent-based bituminous priming coat that seals concrete pores and gives APP, SBS and self-adhesive membranes a surface they can actually grip.

BrandSTPCategoryWaterproofingFormA thin, black, solvent-based bituminous primer from STP that penetrates and seals the pores of concrete and masonry…

What is it?

A thin, black, solvent-based bituminous primer from STP that penetrates and seals the pores of concrete and masonry before a bituminous membrane, tape or sealing compound is laid.

Where is it used?

Roof decks, basement rafts and retaining walls, foundations, podiums, canal-lining joints and concrete floor joints — anywhere a torch-on or self-adhesive bituminous system is about to go down.

Why use it?

A primed deck bonds far better than a bare one. Sealing the surface pores and laying down a tacky bitumen film is what stops membranes from blistering, lifting at laps or de-bonding under service.

How is it applied?

Stir well and apply one uniform coat by brush, roller or spray to a clean, dry, 28-day-cured deck at 3-4 m² per litre, then allow it to dry before membrane installation.

About STP ShaliTex Primer

ShaliTex Primer is STP Limited’s workhorse priming coat for bituminous waterproofing. It is a low-viscosity blend of bitumen dissolved in solvent, formulated thin enough to soak into the surface network of a concrete or masonry substrate rather than merely sitting on top of it. As the solvent flashes off, it leaves behind a continuous, slightly tacky black film that seals dust-fine pores and presents a uniform bituminous surface — exactly the surface an APP or SBS torch-on membrane, a self-adhesive membrane, or a bitumen sealing compound is designed to bond to. The product conforms to IS: 3384-1986 and is a standard fixture in Indian roofing and below-grade waterproofing specifications.

For engineers and applicators, the value of the primer is not glamorous but it is decisive. A bare, dusty or slightly porous deck is the single most common reason membranes blister, tent at the laps, or peel away within a couple of monsoons. ShaliTex Primer addresses that at the interface: it knits down loose surface fines, kills suction, and converts an unpredictable concrete surface into a consistent, bond-ready one. Space Arc Engineering supplies it as an authorised STP channel across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, in the 20 L pail and 200 L drum packs that suit both small terrace jobs and large deck areas.

The technical insight

The mechanism is adhesion physics, not chemistry. Concrete looks solid but its surface is a maze of open capillaries and micro-voids, capped by a weak layer of laitance and construction dust. Lay hot or self-adhesive bitumen straight onto that and you are bonding to the dust, not the slab — and the trapped air in those voids expands under sun and torch heat, pushing the membrane off as blisters. ShaliTex Primer is deliberately thin and solvent-rich so it wicks into those capillaries by capillary action, displacing air and gluing the surface fines together. When the solvent evaporates, the residual bitumen it leaves inside and on the surface is chemically identical to the membrane’s own bitumen, so the two fuse into a single continuous phase instead of meeting as two separate layers. That is why the primed bond so consistently out-performs an unprimed one, and why the drying window matters — apply the membrane too early and residual solvent softens the bond; too late over a re-contaminated deck and you have primed dust again.

Where it is used

  • Priming RCC roof decks before APP or SBS torch-applied bituminous membranes
  • Priming concrete before self-adhesive (peel-and-stick) bituminous membranes and tapes
  • Foundation, raft and retaining-wall waterproofing beneath below-grade membrane systems
  • Damp-proofing of basement walls and floors ahead of a bituminous barrier
  • Priming metal surfaces prior to bituminous membrane or coating application
  • Canal-lining joints ahead of bitumen sealing compound
  • Concrete floor and expansion-type joints before pouring bitumen sealing compound
  • General surface preparation on masonry substrates to be waterproofed with bituminous products

Key advantages

  • Seals surface pores in concrete and masonry, eliminating suction and trapped-air blistering
  • Deposits a bituminous film chemically compatible with all bituminous membranes and tapes, for a fused rather than layered bond
  • Thin, brushable and sprayable consistency covers large deck areas quickly at 3-4 m2 per litre
  • Quick touch-dry of 2-4 hours keeps the waterproofing sequence moving on site
  • Conforms to IS: 3384-1986, so it drops cleanly into standard Indian waterproofing specifications
  • Works on concrete, masonry and metal, covering most substrates a single roofing crew will meet
  • Convenient 20 L pail and 200 L drum packs suit both terrace-scale and large-deck jobs
  • 12-month shelf life in sealed condition gives realistic buffer for project stockholding

Limitations & considerations

  • Solvent-based and flammable (flash point >40 C) — no smoking, open flame or torch work near freshly applied wet primer, and good ventilation is essential
  • It is a primer only, not a standalone waterproofing coat; it must always be overlaid with a bituminous membrane, tape or sealing compound
  • Substrate must be a clean, dust-free, 28-day-cured concrete with moisture content below 5% — it will not bond over green, damp or laitance-covered decks
  • Not for application below +5 C, above +45 C, or during foggy or high-humidity conditions when solvent flash-off and film formation are compromised
  • Solvent odour and VOC content make it unsuitable for poorly ventilated enclosed spaces without forced ventilation
  • Being bitumen-based it is black and UV-sensitive; it is an interlayer primer, never a finished exposed surface

Selection & best practice

Start with the deck, not the drum. The concrete should be a minimum 28 days cured with surface moisture under 5%, broomed free of dust and sand, and free of laitance, oil and curing-compound residue. Confirm both substrate and ambient temperature sit within the +5 C to +45 C window and that no fog or rain is expected during the drying period. Stir the primer thoroughly to redistribute settled bitumen, then apply one thin, uniform coat by brush, roller or spray at roughly 3-4 m² per litre — resist the temptation to lay it on thick, as a heavy coat traps solvent and slows the cure. Prime only the area you can membrane the same day so the tacky film does not re-collect dust. Keep all ignition sources and torching well clear until the solvent has flashed off, allow the primer to dry as specified before laying the membrane, and clean brushes, rollers and spray gear immediately with STP Thinner before the bitumen sets.

Industry use cases

Residential and commercial roofing

Priming RCC terrace and roof decks before APP/SBS torch-on or self-adhesive membranes, so laps stay down and the system resists monsoon-driven ponding.

Basements and below-grade structures

Sealing foundation, raft and retaining-wall concrete ahead of below-grade bituminous membranes for reliable damp-proofing against ground water.

Water-retaining and irrigation works

Priming canal-lining joints and concrete floor joints before bitumen sealing compound is poured, promoting a durable watertight bond.

Industrial and infrastructure decks

Preparing large concrete and metal deck areas on plants, podiums and parking structures where a consistent bond-ready surface is needed before membrane.

Frequently asked questions

Is ShaliTex Primer a waterproofing coating on its own?
No. It is a priming coat only. Its job is to seal the substrate pores and create a bituminous surface that bonds well; it must always be overlaid with a bituminous membrane, tape or sealing compound to actually waterproof the structure.
How much primer do I need per square metre?
Theoretical coverage is 3-4 m² per litre, which works out to roughly 0.25-0.35 litre per m². Porous, textured or rough decks pull more, so allow for wastage and treat the figure as a planning guide rather than a guarantee.
How long should it dry before I lay the membrane?
The primer is touch-dry in about 2-4 hours at 27 C and 55% RH. Give it adequate drying before membrane installation; humidity, low temperature and heavy application all extend that window, so verify a tack-free, solvent-free film before proceeding.
Can I apply it to a fresh or damp concrete deck?
No. The concrete should be at least 28 days cured with surface moisture below 5%, clean and dust-free. Priming green or damp concrete traps moisture and gives a weak bond that will show up as blisters or de-lamination later.
Is it compatible with torch-on APP/SBS membranes?
Yes. It is formulated to bond with all bituminous membranes and tapes, self-adhesive or torch-applied. Because it is solvent-based and flammable, ensure the primer film has fully dried and solvent has flashed off before any torching begins.
What pack sizes does Space Arc supply and how do I clean up?
It is available in 20 L pails and 200 L drums through Space Arc across Delhi NCR and Pan-India. Clean brushes, rollers and spray equipment immediately after use with STP Thinner, before the bitumen sets.

How we position STP ShaliTex Primer

ShaliTex Primer sits at the very start of the STP bituminous waterproofing chain — prime with it, then lay the STP membrane system (the APP/SBS SuperThermoLay range of torch-on membranes, or STP self-adhesive membranes and tapes) over the top, and finish joints with STP ShaliTex bituminous sealing compound where the primer is also used as a bond coat. For teams already standardised on other brands in our catalogue, the same interface job is done by Dr. Fixit and MC-Bauchemie bituminous primers within their own membrane systems; matching primer to membrane brand is the safe default. Space Arc can specify the full stack from a single source, so the primer, membrane and detailing products are guaranteed compatible.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Nitoproof 100 — Choose the Fosroc option when the deck is being primed within a Fosroc Nitoproof / Brushbond waterproofing system, or where a single-brand warranty on primer plus membrane is preferred — Nitoproof 100 is the closest solvent-based bitumen equivalent, though it is positioned as a thin-film damp-proof coat as much as a membrane primer.
