What is it?

A ready-to-use, asphalt (bitumen) based black anti-corrosive coating from STP Limited, formulated for the underbody and chassis of automobiles and commercial vehicles.

Where is it used?

Vehicle underbodies, chassis rails, wheel arches and other exposed metal surfaces that face road splash, mud and salt in workshops and fleet yards.

Why use it?

It lays down a continuous, flexible bituminous film that physically shuts water, moisture and de-icing salt away from bare steel, which is what actually drives underbody rust.

How is it applied?

On a clean, dry, degreased surface it is applied cold by brush or spray in an even coat and left to cure into a tough black protective skin.

About STP SuperKarGard BT

STP Limited (the former Shalimar Tar Products) has spent decades building bituminous and anti-corrosive coatings for Indian conditions, and SuperKarGard BT sits firmly in that lineage. It is a bitumen-based underbody coating made for one job: keeping the underside of a vehicle from rusting out. The chemistry is deliberately simple and proven. A bituminous binder carried in solvent is brushed or sprayed onto the metal, the solvent flashes off, and what remains is a thick, black, rubber-like film that clings to the chassis and the awkward pockets around wheel arches where water loves to sit.

For an Indian audience of workshop owners, fleet operators and applicators, the appeal is practical rather than exotic. Underbody corrosion is driven by monsoon splash, muddy roads, coastal salt air and, in the hills, de-icing salt. SuperKarGard BT answers all of those the same way a good waterproofing membrane answers a leaking slab, by putting a continuous barrier between the aggressor and the substrate. There is no primer system to specify, no two-part mixing, no pot life to watch. That makes it forgiving to apply in a busy garage while still delivering the barrier protection a bare steel underbody needs.

The technical insight

Underbody rust is an electrochemical process: it needs bare iron, oxygen and an electrolyte, and on the road that electrolyte is water carrying dissolved road salt. Break any one of those and corrosion stalls. SuperKarGard BT works by attacking the water side of that equation. Bitumen is naturally hydrophobic and, once the solvent leaves, it knits into a continuous, low-permeability film with no pinholes for moisture to track through. Because the cured film stays flexible rather than going brittle, it moves with the flexing of the chassis and the constant vibration of driving instead of cracking away from it, so the barrier holds up over time. The black film also self-heals minor abrasion to a degree, softening slightly in heat and re-flowing over small nicks, which is a genuine advantage on a surface that is constantly pelted with grit and stones.

Where it is used

  • Anti-corrosion coating for the underbody and floor pan of cars, vans and SUVs
  • Chassis rail and cross-member protection on trucks, buses and commercial vehicles
  • Wheel arch and inner fender coating where splash and grit collect
  • Rustproofing of new vehicles before they enter service in coastal or high-rainfall regions
  • Refurbishment coating over cleaned, de-rusted underbodies during vehicle servicing
  • Protection of exposed steel brackets, mounts and undertray components against moisture
  • Fleet and transport yard preventive maintenance programmes
  • Sound-deadening and stone-chip resistance as a secondary benefit of the thick film

Key advantages

  • Forms a continuous, water-resistant bituminous film that seals the metal from moisture and road salt
  • Ready to use with no mixing, priming system or pot life to manage
  • Applies cold by brush or spray, so it suits both manual touch-up and volume workshop use
  • Flexible cured film moves with chassis flex and vibration instead of cracking off
  • Thick black coating adds useful stone-chip resistance and dampens road noise
  • Good adhesion to properly prepared steel underbody surfaces
  • Cost-effective protection compared with the cost of repairing a rusted-through chassis
  • Backed by STP, an established Indian bituminous and anti-corrosive coatings manufacturer

Limitations & considerations

  • It is a barrier coating, not a cathodic system, so any gap, pinhole or damaged area lets moisture reach the steel
  • Performance depends heavily on surface prep; oil, loose rust or moisture under the film will cause it to fail early
  • As a solvent-borne bituminous product it needs adequate ventilation and care around ignition sources during application and cure
  • Designed for automotive underbody protection, not as a structural waterproofing membrane or a decorative topcoat
  • Being bitumen-based, the film can soften at high temperatures and should be kept away from hot engine and exhaust zones
  • Existing rust must be removed and treated first; the coating seals in whatever is left underneath it

Selection & best practice

Preparation decides the outcome. Wash the underbody thoroughly, remove all mud, grease, loose scale and existing rust down to sound metal, and let the surface dry completely before coating. Any trapped moisture, oil film or loose rust becomes a weak point that the coating simply seals over. Mask off brake components, exhaust and hot engine areas, moving suspension parts, sensors and drain holes. Apply an even coat by brush for touch-up work or by spray for full coverage, working the material into wheel arch pockets, seams and box-section edges where water collects. Build the film to a uniform thickness rather than one heavy sagging layer, allow it to dry and cure with good ventilation, and inspect for any missed spots or pinholes, recoating as needed. Keep the fresh film away from open flame while the solvent is still flashing off.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is STP SuperKarGard BT used for?
It is a bitumen-based anti-corrosive coating for the underbody and chassis of vehicles. It forms a continuous water-resistant film that keeps moisture, mud and road salt off bare steel, which is what causes underbody rust.
Can I apply it myself with a brush, or do I need spray equipment?
Both work. It is applied cold and can be brushed on for touch-ups and smaller areas or sprayed for faster, more even coverage on a full underbody. Spraying reaches tight pockets more easily; brushing gives you control on repairs.
Do I need a primer or hardener before applying it?
No. It is a ready-to-use, single-component product with no mixing and no separate primer system. The critical step is surface preparation, not priming: the metal must be clean, dry and free of grease and loose rust.
Will it stop rust that has already started?
It is a barrier coating, not a rust converter. It seals the surface, so any active rust must be removed and the metal treated first. Coating over loose rust simply traps the problem underneath the film.
How well does it handle monsoon and coastal conditions?
That is its core purpose. Bitumen is naturally water-repellent, and the continuous film blocks the moisture and salt that drive corrosion, which makes it well suited to Indian monsoon splash and coastal salt-air environments.
Is it safe to use near the exhaust and engine?
Keep it away from hot exhaust and engine zones and mask brakes and moving parts. As a bituminous, solvent-borne product it can soften with heat, and adequate ventilation away from ignition sources is needed while it dries and cures.

How we position STP SuperKarGard BT

SuperKarGard BT is the automotive underbody member of STP’s bituminous coatings family, and it is worth positioning honestly against its stablemates because they solve different problems. Where SuperKarGard BT protects vehicle chassis, STP’s TankMastic range (TankMastic, TankMastic 100 and TankMastic 700) is the equivalent barrier for the interior of steel and concrete water tanks and pipes, and the ShaliProtek HR BT series covers heavy-duty structural steel and pipeline protection. For buried and exposed pipework, STP PipeWrap BT and ShaliFerroBlack BT handle anti-corrosive duty on ferrous surfaces. If a specifier’s real need is structural or below-ground waterproofing rather than vehicle rustproofing, we would steer them to STP’s membrane and coating systems, or to comparable Fosroc protective coatings we carry, instead of an automotive underbody product. There is no genuine Fosroc equivalent to an automotive underbody coating, so we do not cross-sell one here; for vehicle work, SuperKarGard BT is the right and honest choice.
