What is it?

A seismic expansion joint system from D-Seal (Dhawan Associates) designed for structures with large, multi-directional movement demands — the top of the D-Seal seismic range.

Where is it used?

Seismic separation joints in hospitals, airports, metro terminals, stadiums, high-rise towers and institutional campuses located in India’s higher seismic zones.

Why use it?

Standard joint covers are built for thermal and shrinkage movement; SeismoMax is configured for the sudden, simultaneous multi-axis displacement an earthquake imposes, protecting both the joint and the finishes around it.

How is it applied?

Custom-configured to the design joint width and movement demand, then mechanically anchored to prepared substrates on both sides of the gap by a trained crew, sealed and movement-tested.

About D-Seal SeismoMax

Seismic separation joints are deliberately wide gaps between structural blocks, and they only do their job if whatever bridges them can move as far and as fast as the structure does. D-Seal SeismoMax sits at the top of the D-Seal expansion joint range for exactly this duty. Where a routine floor or wall cover manages slow thermal cycling of a few millimetres, SeismoMax is configured for large, multi-directional displacement — the kind a hospital block or airport concourse in a high seismic zone must survive without the joint tearing open or the cover becoming a projectile.

D-Seal is the flagship brand of Dhawan Associates, an Indian manufacturer with over 25 years in building expansion joint systems, operating under ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 certified management systems. That matters for seismic work: configurations are engineered to the project rather than pulled off a shelf, and factory support is local. Space Arc Engineering is an authorised distributor and applicator of D-Seal systems, supplying and installing SeismoMax across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

The technical insight

An earthquake does not move a joint in one clean direction. The two structures on either side of a seismic gap displace out of phase — the gap opens and closes, the slabs rack sideways past each other, and floor levels shift vertically, often all within the same few seconds. A joint system for this duty therefore has to do three things a standard cover cannot: accommodate travel far beyond the installed gap width, articulate in more than one axis at once, and return to position ready for aftershocks. SeismoMax achieves this through specialised seismic components engineered around the project’s calculated movement demand, carried on frames anchored to both slab edges. Where aluminium components are used, they are extruded to ASTM B221 in 6063 alloy, and the D-Seal range pairs its metalwork with EPDM, TPR and TPV flexible profiles. The result is a system that spans a wide gap in service yet yields on demand instead of resisting the structure.

Where it is used

  • Seismic separation joints in buildings across India’s higher seismic zones
  • Hospitals and critical-care facilities that must remain functional after a seismic event
  • Airports, metro and transit terminals with long concourses and wide structural gaps
  • Stadiums and large public-assembly venues
  • High-rise residential and commercial towers with tower-to-podium separation joints
  • Institutional and IT campuses where blocks are structurally separated
  • Infrastructure and utility buildings requiring large seismic movement capacity

Key advantages

  • Absorbs large, multi-directional seismic movement — not just thermal cycling
  • Purpose-engineered components rather than an upsized standard joint cover
  • Configurable to the specific joint width and movement demand of each project
  • Protects surrounding finishes and the joint edge from damage during seismic events
  • Extruded aluminium components to ASTM B221 / 6063 alloy where used, with EPDM/TPR/TPV profile options in the D-Seal range
  • Manufactured and supported in India — shorter lead times and local engineering backup than imported seismic systems
  • Manufacturer certified to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018
  • Supplied and installed by one accountable party through Space Arc’s applicator team

Limitations & considerations

  • Movement capacity is configuration-specific — there is no single off-the-shelf rating, so structural movement data from the consultant is needed before the system can be sized and quoted
  • Performance depends on the as-built joint gap matching the design width; it cannot compensate for a structural gap built significantly narrower than designed
  • Installation is anchor- and tolerance-critical and should be done by a trained applicator crew, not a general finishing contractor
  • Fire-rated and acoustic barrier requirements are not automatic — confirm the barrier configuration at specification stage if the joint sits on a fire compartment line
  • Custom-engineered configurations carry longer lead times than standard floor or wall covers, so the joint schedule should be frozen early
  • The system requires inspection after any significant seismic event; displaced or damaged components must be reinstated to restore full capacity

Selection & best practice

Start from the structural drawings, not the architectural finish schedule: confirm the design joint width and the consultant’s movement demand for each joint line before selecting a configuration. On site, measure the actual as-built gap along its full run — seismic joints often vary floor to floor. Prepare substrates so both edges are sound, level and parallel; weak or spalled edges must be repaired first, since the anchors carry the system through every movement cycle. Set anchors at the specified spacing and embedment, fit the seismic components square to the joint, and complete perimeter sealing so water cannot bypass the system. Before handover, verify free movement across the intended range — a seismic joint that binds is a defect even if it looks finished. Thereafter, inspect periodically and always after seismic activity: check components, anchors and covers, clear debris from the joint cavity, and replace damaged parts promptly.

Industry use cases

Healthcare

Hospital blocks in high seismic zones use SeismoMax on separation joints so corridors, services and finishes across the gap survive an event and the facility stays operational when it is needed most.

Airports & Transit

Long concourses and terminal buildings carry wide seismic gaps through public circulation areas; SeismoMax bridges them with a trafficable, serviceable system sized to the structure’s movement demand.

High-Rise & Commercial

Tower-to-podium and block-to-block joints in high-rise and large commercial developments get a configured seismic system instead of an improvised cover-plate detail.

Stadiums & Public Venues

Assembly structures with large roof and stand movements use SeismoMax where crowd safety rules out joint covers that could dislodge under seismic displacement.

Institutional Campuses

Universities, IT parks and government campuses with structurally separated blocks standardise on one engineered seismic joint system across buildings for consistent detailing and maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

How much movement can SeismoMax actually take?
It is built for large, multi-directional seismic movement, but the exact capacity depends on the configuration engineered for your joint. Share your joint width and the consultant’s movement data with us and we will have D-Seal size the correct configuration — no single catalogue number honestly covers every project.
How is this different from a normal expansion joint cover?
Standard covers handle slow, mostly one-directional thermal and shrinkage movement. A seismic event moves the joint in several directions at once, fast, and well beyond normal service range. SeismoMax uses specialised seismic components designed for that displacement, so the system moves with the structure instead of failing across the gap.
Where in India is a system like this required?
It is most relevant in the higher seismic zones defined by IS 1893 — including Delhi NCR, the Himalayan belt, the Northeast and Kutch — wherever the structural design includes seismic separation joints. Your structural consultant defines the movement demand; we match the joint system to it.
What is SeismoMax made of?
The system uses specialised seismic components; aluminium parts, where used, are extruded to ASTM B221 in 6063 alloy, and D-Seal’s range includes EPDM, TPR and TPV flexible profiles. The exact build-up depends on the configuration selected for your joint.
Does Space Arc install SeismoMax or only supply it?
Both. Space Arc Engineering is an authorised D-Seal distributor and applicator, so we can quote supply-only for your contractor or a supply-and-install package with our trained crews, across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
Does the joint need replacement after an earthquake?
Not necessarily, but it must be inspected. After any seismic activity, check components, anchors and covers for damage and clear debris from the joint. Sound systems continue in service; displaced or damaged parts should be reinstated promptly so the joint retains full capacity for aftershocks.

How we position D-Seal SeismoMax

SeismoMax is the system to specify when the movement demand is genuinely seismic and large. For floor joints with more moderate seismic movement, D-Seal SeismoGuard 100 is the lighter sibling in the same family; JointShield and HorizonGuard cover wall and roof joint lines, and trafficked decks and parking structures are better served by D-Seal LoadMaster or ParkGuard. Compressible D-Seal EPDM seals such as GatewaySeal and EnduroSeal suit smaller gaps that do not warrant a mechanical system. Around the joint itself, we supply elastomeric joint sealants from our Fosroc and Sika lines for the adjacent construction and perimeter joints, and waterproofing systems where the joint passes through wet areas or podium decks. Send us your joint schedule and we will map each joint line to the right system rather than forcing one product across the project.
