What is it?

A liquid Type A water-reducing plasticiser from MC-Bauchemie, built on lignosulphonate chemistry for general-purpose concrete.

Where is it used?

Site-batched and ready-mix concrete for columns, beams, slabs, foundations and precast, plus masonry mortar and plaster in the M25-M35 band.

Why use it?

It lets you trim mixing water without losing workability, so the same mix gains strength and finish at little extra cost.

How is it applied?

Dosed by volume into the mixing water or added to the wet mix at 0.1-0.4% by mass of cement, then mixed to a uniform consistency.

About MC-Bauchemie Centrament Flow 100

Centrament Flow 100 is MC-Bauchemie’s workhorse plasticiser for the kind of concrete that gets poured every day on Indian sites — grade-M25 to M35 structural members, raft slabs, pile caps and the bulk of ready-mix orders that do not need a premium polycarboxylate. It is a liquid admixture based on lignosulphonate (or modified lignosulphonate) chemistry, and it does one job dependably: it reduces the water a mix needs to reach a given workability. That water reduction is the lever behind almost everything a site engineer cares about — higher compressive strength, a denser and less permeable matrix, and a cleaner cast surface, all without changing the cement content.

The product sits at the accessible end of MC-Bauchemie’s admixture range, and that is deliberate. Not every pour justifies a high-range superplasticiser; a great deal of general building work simply needs a reliable normal-range water reducer that batches cleanly and behaves predictably in the mixer. Centrament Flow 100 fills that slot. Because it is dispensed as a liquid and dosed by volume, it drops straight into a site-batching routine or an RMC dispensing system without special handling. For Space Arc’s contractor and consultant clients across Delhi NCR and pan-India, it is the sensible default plasticiser when the specification calls for IS 9103 Type A performance and cost per cubic metre matters.

The technical insight

The chemistry works by dispersing cement. Fresh cement grains carry surface charges that make them clump into flocs, and those flocs trap mixing water that would otherwise lubricate the mix. Lignosulphonate molecules adsorb onto the cement particles and impose a like charge on their surfaces, so the grains repel one another instead of clustering. The trapped water is released, the paste flows more freely, and you can either keep the same slump on less water or hold the water and gain 50-75 mm of slump. Take the water-reduction route — typically 8-12% at the standard dose — and the water-cement ratio drops; since strength and permeability track the w/c ratio closely, the hardened concrete comes out stronger and tighter with no extra cement. The trade-off is honest and worth knowing: lignosulphonates carry sugar-type fractions that mildly delay early hydration, so expect a minor set retardation of roughly 30-60 minutes at normal dosage. On most pours that is harmless or even helpful in the heat; only in cold weather or on fast-cycle precast does it need managing.

Where it is used

  • Reinforced structural concrete — columns, beams and suspended slabs in the M25-M35 range
  • Foundation concrete such as raft slabs, pile caps and column footings
  • General ready-mix concrete where a normal-range Type A water reducer is specified
  • Site-batched concrete needing consistent, repeatable workability
  • Masonry mortar and plaster where improved flow and finish are wanted
  • Precast panels, blocks and non-critical precast elements
  • Pumped or placed concrete where a modest slump boost eases handling
  • Water-reduced mixes targeting higher strength without added cement

Key advantages

  • Reduces mixing water by around 8-12% at standard dosage, lifting strength and durability
  • Increases slump by roughly 50-75 mm when workability rather than strength is the goal
  • Conforms to IS 9103 Type A and ASTM C494 Type A, so it fits standard specifications
  • Cost-effective lignosulphonate chemistry — the economical choice for everyday concrete
  • Liquid form allows easy, accurate site dosing by volume into the mix water
  • Produces a denser matrix with lower permeability and a cleaner cast finish
  • Mild set retardation can be an advantage for placing concrete in hot Indian conditions
  • Compatible with ordinary Portland and blended cements used across most Indian projects

Limitations & considerations

  • Normal-range only — it will not deliver the very high water reduction or self-compacting flow of a polycarbonate (PCE) superplasticiser
  • Best suited to the M25-M35 band; high-grade and high-performance concrete needs a stronger admixture
  • The inherent 30-60 minute retardation must be accounted for in cold weather and on fast-cycle precast
  • Not an accelerator, air-entrainer or integral waterproofer — pair it with the right product for those functions
  • Overdosing can excessively delay set and cause bleeding, so trial the dose before bulk use
  • Water-reduction gains are realised only if the batch water is actually cut — simply adding it without reducing water gives workability, not strength

Selection & best practice

Always establish the working dose by trial mix with your actual cement, aggregates and target grade rather than defaulting to a fixed figure — the 0.1-0.4% by mass of cement range (1-4 litres per 1,000 kg cement) is a starting band, not a recipe. Add Centrament Flow 100 to the mixing water or to the already-wet mix, never to dry cement, and give it enough mixing time to disperse uniformly; adding it to a partly mixed batch usually gives better water reduction than dosing it with the initial water. Decide upfront whether you are chasing strength or workability: to gain strength, cut the batch water and hold the admixture dose; to gain slump, keep the water and let the plasticiser do the work. In hot weather the mild retardation helps hold slump on the way to the pour, but in cold conditions or on fast precast lines plan for the slower early set. Store the drums sealed, out of direct sun and above freezing, and protect from frost.

Enhances flow and surface finish in precast panels, blocks, mortar and plaster — with the retardation flagged for fast-cycle precast lines.

Frequently asked questions

Is Centrament Flow 100 a superplasticiser or a normal plasticiser?
It is a normal-range (Type A) water-reducing plasticiser, not a high-range superplasticiser. It typically reduces water by 8-12%, which suits everyday M25-M35 concrete. For high water reduction or self-compacting mixes you need a polycarboxylate (PCE) superplasticiser instead.
What dosage should I use?
The range is 0.1-0.4% by mass of cement, equivalent to 1-4 litres per 1,000 kg of cement. Treat that as a starting band and fix the exact dose by a trial mix with your own materials and target grade, since aggregates and cement type shift the optimum.
Will it retard my concrete?
Yes, mildly — expect around 30-60 minutes of set retardation at standard dosage, which is normal for lignosulphonate plasticisers. In hot weather this often helps by holding slump; in cold conditions or on fast precast lines, plan for the slower early set.
Does it comply with Indian standards?
Yes. It conforms to IS 9103 Type A and ASTM C494 Type A for water-reducing and plasticising admixtures, so it fits specifications that call for a Type A admixture.
Can it replace a superplasticiser to save money?
Only where the concrete genuinely needs normal-range performance. For general building work in the M25-M35 band it is an economical choice, but high-grade, high-performance or self-compacting concrete still requires a stronger PCE-based product — substituting it there will not meet the mix design.
How do I add it to the mix?
Dose it by volume into the mixing water or into the already-wet mix, never onto dry cement, and mix until uniform. Adding it to a partly mixed batch generally gives better water reduction than putting it in with the initial water.

How we position MC-Bauchemie Centrament Flow 100

Centrament Flow 100 is the entry point of MC-Bauchemie’s Centrament admixture family and pairs naturally with the rest of that range: step up to a Centrament Flow PCE-based superplasticiser when a project needs high water reduction, high-grade or self-compacting concrete; add Centrament Air for entrained-air freeze-thaw or finish requirements; or move to a Centrament retarding grade for large mass pours and long-haul RMC. Because Space Arc supplies the full MC-Bauchemie line alongside Fosroc, Sika and Dr. Fixit, we can match the admixture to the specification rather than the stock on the shelf — if a job standardises on Fosroc, the Conplast plasticiser range is the equivalent path, and where integral waterproofing or repair is also in scope we cross-reference the relevant Dr. Fixit or Fosroc systems. Talk to our technical team for a trial-mix recommendation before you commit to a bulk order.
