Why is it important to use a non-chloride accelerator for reinforced concrete?
Calcium chloride is a very effective and low-cost concrete accelerator, but chloride ions are the primary cause of corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete. Even in small amounts, chloride ions can break down the passive oxide layer on the steel surface and initiate corrosion, which in turn causes cracking and spalling of the concrete cover. Most modern concrete specifications — and IS 456:2000 for reinforced concrete — prohibit the use of calcium chloride or chloride-based admixtures in reinforced concrete. Conplast P211 is a non-chloride accelerator, providing fast setting without introducing chloride ions that could lead to reinforcement corrosion.
Can Conplast P211 be used in precast concrete for faster demoulding?
Yes. Conplast P211 is used in precast concrete production to accelerate the rate of strength gain and allow earlier demoulding, which increases the productivity of the precast factory by reducing the time each mould is in use. The required demoulding strength for most precast elements is specified on the structural drawings. Trial mixes should be carried out with the actual cement and at the expected curing temperature to establish the dosage of Conplast P211 needed to achieve the required demoulding strength within the production cycle time.
How does Conplast P211 provide waterproofing in concrete?
The waterproofing mechanism of Conplast P211 is through chemical interaction with the products of cement hydration in the concrete matrix. The active chemical components of P211 react with calcium hydroxide (produced during cement hydration) to form insoluble compounds that block the fine capillary pore network through which water permeates. This integral waterproofing is throughout the full depth of the concrete section, providing protection even if the surface is abraded. It is complementary to — not a replacement for — good concrete cover, adequate compaction, and appropriate curing.
