What is it?

A concentrated solution of selected surfactants that, fed through a Conplast Foam Generator with potable water, produces a stable pre-foam for making lightweight foamed (cellular) concrete.

Where is it used?

Trench reinstatement, void and tank filling, roof and floor insulating screeds, and semi-structural fill behind abutments, embankments, tunnels and arches.

Why use it?

It delivers a consistent, alkali-stable pre-foam that blends in a readymix drum without specialist blending plant, giving close control of finished density from 900 to 1500 kg/m3.

How is it applied?

Diluted to a 4% solution (4 L F294 to 100 L water) in the foam generator; the pre-foam is added to a pre-batched sand:cement mortar in a readymix truck on fast spin for 2-4 minutes.

About Fosroc Conplast F294

Fosroc Conplast F294 is a foam concrete admixture — a concentrated, water-based solution of selected surfactants formulated specifically to generate a stable pre-foam for the production of foamed (cellular) concrete. It is not a conventional plasticiser, water-reducer or integral waterproofer; instead of being dosed directly into a mix, F294 is metered with potable water through a dedicated Conplast Foam Generator to create a fine, alkali-stable foam. That foam is then folded into a pre-batched cement grout or sand:cement mortar, trapping a controlled volume of air bubbles that lowers the density of the hardened concrete. Foamed concrete made this way is lightweight, highly mobile and self-levelling, able to flow long distances under its own hydraulic head and to be placed without compaction. For contractors, consultants and engineers across Delhi NCR and Pan-India working on infrastructure reinstatement, building services and geotechnical fill, F294 offers a route to lightweight fill and screeds using familiar readymix logistics rather than purpose-built cellular-concrete plant. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, supplies Conplast F294 alongside the generator equipment and technical guidance needed to commission it on site.

The technical insight

The chemistry here is interfacial, not pozzolanic. F294’s surfactants reduce the surface tension of water so that, when sheared with air in the foam generator, they stabilise a fine network of bubble walls (lamellae) that survive the high-pH, ionic environment of fresh cement paste. The key engineering relationship is that the compressive strength of the hardened material is governed primarily by its density and by the cement content of the starting mortar — a richer mortar yields a stronger product at any given density. Typical 28-day strengths from Fosroc’s tests are modest (broadly in the low single-digit N/mm2 range for lower densities, rising with density and cement richness), which is why foamed concrete is treated as a fill/screed material rather than a structural concrete. Two practical levers matter most on site: the starting mortar must be very workable (a collapsed slump, water:cement typically 0.5-0.6) so the foam blends cleanly, and the sand should be fine — a high proportion passing 300 microns and negligible material above 2 mm — because coarse sands destabilise the foam, especially at low densities. Density is checked after blending because foam break-down during long transport, delays or pumping raises density and cuts yield. F294 is for foam generation only; adding it straight into a mix will not produce a foamed system.

Where it is used

  • Permanent, non-sink trench reinstatement over buried services
  • Void and disused-tank filling to eliminate fire risk, health hazards and progressive collapse (fuel/solvent tanks, redundant sewers, old mine workings, below railway platforms)
  • Lightweight insulating roof screeds, suspended floors and basements
  • Semi-structural support fill behind bridge abutments, embankments, tunnels and arches
  • Free-flowing, self-levelling fill placed by chute, gravity flow or standard concrete pump
  • Density-controlled lightweight concrete from 900 to 1500 kg/m3 produced in a readymix drum

Key advantages

  • Produces a consistent, stable pre-foam that holds up under the alkaline conditions of cement paste
  • Foam is blended in the drum of an ordinary readymix truck — no expensive cellular-concrete blending plant required
  • Close control of finished density (900-1500 kg/m3) by adjusting the volume of pre-foam added
  • Yields highly mobile, self-levelling foamed concrete that places without compaction and pumps with standard equipment
  • Foamed concrete retains its volume and resists sinking during and after hardening
  • Water-based and non-flammable, with a low dosage (0.6-1.0 L/m3 of finished concrete)
  • Compatible with Portland cement and, on trial, with PFA, GGBFS and microsilica blends

Limitations & considerations

  • Requires a dedicated Conplast Foam Generator and proportional feeder — it cannot simply be poured into a mix
  • Adding F294 directly to mortar will not create a foamed system
  • Only potable water may be used for the pre-foam; concrete wash water or water high in calcium ions must be avoided
  • Not suited to coarse sands; sands with significant material over 2 mm should be avoided as they destabilise the foam, particularly at low density
  • Density can drift by about plus/minus 100 kg/m3, and long transport, placement delays or pumping can break down foam, raising density and reducing yield
  • Placing against a dry substrate risks foam collapse from water suction — the substrate should be pre-wetted
  • Overdosing the foam lowers density but also reduces compressive strength; trials are essential to fix the optimum mix

Selection & best practice

Always establish the mix by site trials with the actual sand, cement and conditions before production. Pre-batch a fine sand:cement mortar to a collapsed-slump workability (water:cement around 0.5-0.6) so the foam blends in cleanly, and leave headroom in the drum for the volume increase. Calibrate the generator to the 4% dilution (4 L F294 per 100 L potable water), add the pre-foam on site rather than at the plant to limit foam break-down, and keep the drum on fast spin for 2-4 minutes after addition. Check density immediately after blending and adjust foam volume to hit target. Pre-wet dry substrates, place promptly, and cure with water spray, wet hessian or a Concure membrane once the surface has set.

Frequently asked questions

Is Conplast F294 a plasticiser or waterproofing admixture?
No. F294 is a foaming agent — a concentrated surfactant solution used with a Conplast Foam Generator to create a stable pre-foam for lightweight foamed concrete. It is not a superplasticiser, water-reducer or integral waterproofer, and it is not dosed directly into a normal concrete mix.
What density of foamed concrete can it produce?
It is typically used to produce foamed concrete from 900 to 1500 kg/m3, with finished density controlled by the volume of pre-foam added. Expect roughly plus/minus 100 kg/m3 variation unless very tight control is exercised.
What is the dosage and dilution?
Typical dosage is 0.6 to 1.0 litres of F294 per cubic metre of finished foamed concrete. In the generator it is diluted to a 4% solution — 4 litres of F294 to 100 litres of potable water. Optimum figures should always be confirmed by site trials.
Do I need special equipment to use it?
Yes. A Conplast Foam Generator with a calibrated proportional feeder is required to make the pre-foam. The foam is then blended into a pre-batched mortar in an ordinary readymix truck drum, so no separate cellular-concrete blending plant is needed.
What sand and mortar should be used?
Use a fine sand with a high proportion passing 300 microns and negligible material over 2 mm; soft building/mortar sands work well at low densities. Batch the starting mortar to a collapsed-slump workability, generally at a water:cement ratio of about 0.5 to 0.6, so the foam blends in cleanly.
How is it packed and stored, and what is the shelf life?
Conplast F294 is supplied in 210 litre and 25 litre drums. It has a minimum shelf life of 12 months when stored between 5 C and 50 C. If it freezes it must be fully thawed and thoroughly remixed before use.

How we position Fosroc Conplast F294

Conplast F294 sits in a specialist niche within the Fosroc Conplast admixture family. Unlike the everyday Conplast workhorses — superplasticisers such as Conplast SP430, integral waterproofers like Conplast WL/Conplast X421 or the Conplast Crystalline range, and retarders or accelerators — F294 is purely a foaming agent for cellular concrete. Within Fosroc’s own line it is closely related to Conplast F292, which serves a similar foamed-concrete role, and both depend on the matching Conplast Foam Generator hardware. For projects in India that need lightweight or controlled-density fill, the realistic alternatives are other foaming-agent systems and lightweight-fill technologies rather than ordinary admixtures: Sika offers foaming agents and lightweight/CLC solutions (e.g. the SikaAer / Sika Lightcrete family), and several specialist Indian CLC (cellular lightweight concrete) suppliers market protein- and synthetic-based foaming agents for block and in-situ fill. General building-chemical brands familiar to Indian buyers such as MYK/MBS, Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and STP focus on waterproofing, repair and conventional admixtures and are not direct substitutes for a foamed-concrete foaming agent, though they compete with the broader Conplast and waterproofing range. The honest positioning: choose F294 when you want Fosroc-supported, density-controlled foamed concrete produced through readymix logistics with field commissioning support; for structural concrete performance, water reduction or waterproofing, look instead to the mainstream Conplast superplasticiser and waterproofing products that Space Arc Engineering also supplies.
