Fosroc Torchseal Primer M
Cold-applied bituminous primer that locks torch-applied waterproofing membranes onto concrete — the critical first coat for roofs, basements and podiums across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
What is it?
A solvent-based, cold-applied bituminous primer (bitumen in white-spirit carrier) engineered to prepare concrete and screed surfaces for Fosroc Proofex Torchseal torch-applied membranes.
Where is it used?
Concrete roof slabs, basement rafts and retaining walls, podiums, wet areas, water tanks and below-grade structures — anywhere an APP/SBS sheet membrane is heat-bonded to a substrate.
Why use it?
It penetrates and seals the concrete pores, suppresses surface dust, and creates a tacky bituminous film so the molten underside of the torch membrane fuses to the deck instead of just sitting on it — eliminating de-bonding and blistering.
How is it applied?
Brush, roller or squeegee one even coat over clean, dry, primed-ready concrete at roughly 5-6 m² per litre, let it cure tack-free, then torch-apply the membrane the same day.
About Fosroc Torchseal Primer M
Fosroc Torchseal Primer M is the surface-preparation coat within the Fosroc Proofex Torchseal waterproofing system. It is a single-component, cold-applied liquid bituminous primer: a penetration-grade bitumen dissolved in a white-spirit solvent carrier that flashes off after application to leave a thin, uniform black bituminous film. That film is the chemical handshake between a porous, mineral concrete surface and the bituminous underside of a torch-applied polymer-modified bitumen (APP or SBS) membrane. Without it, the membrane bonds inconsistently; with it, the molten bitumen released during torching wets out and fuses into a continuous, monolithic bond. As the name suggests, the “M” grade is formulated for the high working temperatures encountered during torch application and in hot Indian roof-deck conditions, so the primed surface stays compatible with the flame-fused membrane. On a typical Indian project — a Gurugram high-rise roof, a Noida basement raft, or a podium slab in a Delhi commercial complex — the waterproofing contractor first power-floats and cleans the deck, then rolls out Torchseal Primer M as the foundation coat before the membrane crew arrives with their gas torches. It is a consumable, not a standalone waterproofer: it has no function on its own, but the long-term performance of the entire membrane system rests on this coat being applied correctly. Space Arc Engineering supplies Torchseal Primer M as part of the complete Proofex Torchseal package — primer, membranes, jointing tapes and detailing accessories — so the chemistry across the build-up is matched and warranty-backed.
The technical insight
The primer works on two mechanisms that matter to a site engineer. First, mechanical keying: the low-viscosity, solvent-thinned bitumen wicks into the capillary pores and micro-cracks of the concrete, and as the white-spirit solvent evaporates, the residual bitumen anchors itself mechanically into the surface — which is why a sound, dust-free, structurally cured substrate is non-negotiable. Second, chemical compatibility: the residual film is the same bituminous chemistry as the membrane’s underside, so when the torch flame melts the membrane to roughly its softening point, the two bitumen phases coalesce into a single fused interface rather than a glued lap. The relative density sits around 0.85-0.90 at 20°C and the product behaves as a thin, free-flowing liquid, which is what gives the 5-6 m²/litre spread rate on reasonably closed concrete. The trade-off engineers must respect is flammability: with a flash point near 39°C and a high VOC content, the solvent vapour is heavier than air and ignitable — and the next step in the sequence is an open gas flame. The discipline is therefore to let the primer go fully tack-free (so essentially all solvent has flashed off) before any torch is lit, both for bond quality and for fire safety. The “M” high-temperature formulation keeps the primed film stable on dark roof decks that can exceed 60-70°C in a north-Indian summer, preventing the primer from re-softening and disturbing the bond line.
Where it is used
- Priming concrete roof slabs before torch-applied Proofex Torchseal APP/SBS membranes
- Basement rafts, retaining walls and below-grade tanking on high-rise and commercial projects
- Podium decks and landscaped terraces over occupied space
- Wet areas, water tanks and reservoir structures requiring bonded membrane waterproofing
- Sealing porous, dusty concrete and screed surfaces to suppress dust before membrane bonding
- Bridge decks, car park slabs and water-excluding civil structures using sheet membranes
Key advantages
- Cold-applied — no heating of the primer itself, so it is fast and simple to roll, brush or squeegee on site
- Penetrates and seals concrete pores while binding loose surface dust for a stronger, cleaner bond
- Chemically matched to Proofex Torchseal membranes, giving a fused rather than merely glued interface
- Dries quickly to a tack-free film, allowing same-day torch application and faster project turnaround
- High-temperature (‘M’) formulation stays stable on hot Indian roof decks during and after torching
- Backed by the Fosroc Proofex Torchseal system with full technical and warranty support in India
Limitations & considerations
- Solvent-based and flammable (flash point ~39°C) — vapours are ignitable, so an open torch must never approach a wet, un-flashed coat
- High VOC content demands good ventilation, especially in enclosed basements, and appropriate PPE
- Not a waterproofing layer on its own — it is only a bonding primer and must be over-coated with a membrane
- Requires a sound, dry, clean and properly cured concrete substrate; it cannot bond to damp, dusty, laitance-covered or oily surfaces
- Must be allowed to dry fully tack-free before torching; rushing this step risks blistering, poor bond and a fire hazard
- Strong solvent odour and not suited to application in poorly ventilated, confined or occupied spaces without controls
Selection & best practice
Prepare the substrate first: the concrete must be sound, fully cured, dry and free of dust, laitance, curing compounds, oil and loose particles — grind or wire-brush where needed and vacuum clean. Stir the primer, then apply one thin, even coat by brush, roller or squeegee at about 5-6 m² per litre, working it into the surface so pores are sealed without ponding excess. On very porous or dusty decks a second pass may be needed. Allow the coat to cure until it is genuinely tack-free — touch-test across the area — before lighting any torch; this both completes solvent flash-off (critical for fire safety) and develops the bond. Apply the Proofex Torchseal membrane the same working day so the primed film is not contaminated by overnight dust or dew. Keep all ignition sources away while the primer is still wet, ensure cross-ventilation in basements and tanks, and have fire extinguishers on hand. Always confirm the live coverage rate, drying time and shelf life against the current Fosroc Technical Data Sheet for your batch and site temperature.

How we position Fosroc Torchseal Primer M
Torchseal Primer M sits at the start of the Fosroc Proofex Torchseal sheet-membrane system and should be specified alongside Proofex Torchseal APP/SBS membranes (such as the Torchseal 3S/4S/5S and 3P/4P ranges) and their detailing tapes — it is the dedicated bonding primer for that family and is not interchangeable with liquid-membrane primers. Within Fosroc’s own range, contractors choosing a liquid-applied or coating-based waterproofing route would instead look at systems like Nitoproof or Brushbond rather than a torch membrane and its primer. Against the wider Indian market, the equivalent torch-membrane primers from competitors include Sika’s bituminous membrane primers, STP (Shalimar) Cosmofin/torch-membrane primers, Dr. Fixit’s bituminous primer for its membrane systems, and MBS-type bitumen primers — all serve the same purpose, so the deciding factors are membrane-to-primer compatibility, warranty, and consistent supply. The honest case for Torchseal Primer M is system integrity: using the Fosroc primer under a Fosroc membrane keeps the chemistry matched and the warranty intact. Where a project is already committed to a non-Fosroc membrane, the right primer is that manufacturer’s own; mixing brands across the bond line is the one thing to avoid. Space Arc Engineering’s role is to supply the complete, matched Fosroc build-up and advise on the correct primer-membrane pairing for each application.
