Fosroc Nitoproof WB Primer
Low-VOC, water-based epoxy primer that locks liquid-applied waterproofing membranes to old and new concrete.
What is it?
A water-based, two-component (base + hardener) epoxy primer for old and new concrete, supplied by Fosroc as the bonding layer beneath its liquid-applied waterproofing membranes.
Where is it used?
On concrete roof slabs, podiums, basements, terraces, wet areas, water tanks and retaining structures, immediately before applying Nitoproof or Brushbond membranes.
Why use it?
It penetrates the concrete and creates a clean, dust-free, well-bonded surface so the topcoat membrane adheres reliably instead of peeling or blistering, while keeping site VOC and odour low.
How is it applied?
Mix base and hardener, dilute with water, then roller-apply a single thin coat at 8-10 m2/litre and overcoat with the chosen membrane within the open time.
About Fosroc Nitoproof WB Primer
Fosroc Nitoproof WB Primer is a water-based epoxy primer engineered as the foundation layer of Fosroc’s liquid-applied waterproofing systems. In any membrane installation, the primer is the part most installers underestimate and the part that most often decides whether the system lasts. Nitoproof WB Primer exists to solve a specific problem on Indian sites: getting a durable bond between green or weathered concrete and a liquid membrane, without the strong solvents, odour and fire risk that traditional solvent-based epoxy primers bring onto an occupied or enclosed site.
Being water-based and very low in VOC, it can be used in basements, water tanks, plant rooms, kitchens and other poorly ventilated areas where solvented primers are difficult or unsafe to apply. The two-component epoxy chemistry still gives the chemical grip and substrate penetration of an epoxy, so it does not trade performance for low odour. Once mixed and diluted with water, it becomes a thin, milky liquid that soaks into the concrete pores, binds loose surface dust, and dries to a sound film that the membrane can key into.
The product is not a standalone waterproofer. It is specified and supplied to be overcoated with Fosroc liquid membranes such as Nitoproof 600PF, Nitoproof 600 Standard, Nitoproof WB and Nitocote PUW100, and it is also used under Brushbond cementitious-acrylic coatings on concrete. For contractors, consultants and procurement teams in India, treating the primer as an integral, non-negotiable line item in the membrane specification, rather than an optional extra, is the single biggest factor in long-term membrane adhesion and warranty compliance. Space Arc Engineering supplies it as part of complete Fosroc waterproofing packages across Delhi NCR and pan-India, with applicator support to ensure it is dosed, diluted and overcoated correctly.
The technical insight
Nitoproof WB Primer is a two-pack water-based epoxy. The base and hardener are first mixed together with a slow-speed mixer for 2-3 minutes to a uniform milky-white paste, and only then diluted with water at roughly a 2:1 water-to-primer ratio by volume (for example 4 litres of water to a 2-litre unit, or 12 litres of water to a 6-litre unit). This two-stage sequence matters: dilute before the resin and hardener have properly co-reacted and the film will not cure correctly. Diluted, it forms a low-viscosity liquid that wets and penetrates the concrete rather than sitting as a skin on top, which is what creates the mechanical and chemical key for the membrane. Pot life after mixing is about 3 hours at 27 degrees C, so it should be batched to what the team can lay in that window. The film reaches a tack-free condition in roughly 4-5 hours at 27 degrees C, and the critical overcoating window is that the liquid membrane should be applied before 16 hours at 27 degrees C from the time the primer was laid; leave it longer and inter-coat adhesion can suffer, requiring a re-prime. Higher temperatures shorten all of these times and cold or humid conditions extend them, so site teams in India must adjust to season and time of day rather than follow a fixed clock.
Where it is used
- Priming concrete roof slabs and terraces before Nitoproof 600PF or 600 Standard liquid membranes
- Basement raft slabs and retaining walls ahead of liquid waterproofing
- Concrete water tanks and STP/WTP structures before a potable-compatible membrane system
- Toilet, bathroom and kitchen sunk-slab wet areas before liquid or cementitious membranes
- Podium decks and planters over occupied space where low odour is essential
- Plant rooms, lift pits and enclosed areas where solvent-based primers are unsuitable
- Substrate preparation under Nitocote PUW100 polyurethane and Brushbond coatings on concrete
Key advantages
- Water-based with very low VOC, suitable for enclosed and poorly ventilated areas
- Low application viscosity gives excellent penetration into the concrete substrate
- Strong adhesion to both old (weathered) and new concrete
- Low odour and reduced fire hazard compared with solvent-based epoxy primers
- Easy water clean-up of tools before the primer cures
- Supports fast-track construction with a same-day tack-free and overcoat sequence
- Compatible primer across multiple Fosroc Nitoproof and Nitocote membrane systems
Limitations & considerations
- Not a standalone waterproofer; it must be overcoated with a compatible liquid or cementitious membrane
- Must not be used where active hydrostatic (water) pressure is present at the time of application
- Not for use where relative humidity exceeds 95% or moisture vapour transmission exceeds 10 lbs per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours
- Do not apply below 5 degrees C
- Limited pot life of about 3 hours at 27 degrees C once mixed
- Overcoating must be completed within about 16 hours at 27 degrees C or re-priming may be needed
- Short 6-month shelf life means stock must be rotated and stored below 25 degrees C
- Two-stage mix-then-dilute sequence must be followed exactly or the film will not cure properly
Selection & best practice
Prepare the concrete first: it must be sound, clean and free of laitance, oil, curing compound and loose dust, with surface defects made good. Mix the full base and hardener together with a slow-speed drill for 2-3 minutes to a uniform milky paste before adding water at the recommended 2:1 ratio, and never split or part-mix the packs. Apply one thin, even coat by roller at 8-10 m2/litre, working it into the surface rather than puddling it. Batch only what the crew can apply within the 3-hour pot life and the 16-hour overcoat window, and never leave a primed surface exposed overnight before membrane application. On hot Indian afternoons prime in the cooler morning hours, and never apply over standing water, damp-but-pressurised slabs, or substrates above 95% RH. Always confirm the primer-to-membrane combination against the specific Fosroc membrane datasheet for the project.

How we position Fosroc Nitoproof WB Primer
Nitoproof WB Primer should be specified as the matched primer for Fosroc liquid-applied membranes rather than as a generic bonding agent. It pairs directly with Fosroc topcoats such as Nitoproof 600PF and Nitoproof 600 Standard (polyurethane-based liquid membranes), Nitoproof WB, Nitocote PUW100 and Brushbond Roofguard, and choosing the Fosroc-recommended primer is what keeps a single-source system warranty intact. Where a solvent-based or higher-build epoxy primer is needed, Fosroc’s own Nitoprime WB, Nitoprime 28 and Fosroc Primer 20 ranges are the natural in-house alternatives to evaluate. Against the wider Indian market, comparable water-based or epoxy waterproofing primers are available from Sika (for example SikaTop and Sikalastic primers), MYK Arment (MBS), Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and STP Limited, and these are credible substitutes when the project is built around those manufacturers’ membrane systems. The key engineering point is compatibility: a primer should be selected to suit the membrane and substrate it serves, never mixed across brands, and the lowest-VOC option that meets the exposure conditions should be preferred for enclosed Indian sites. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, Space Arc Engineering supplies Nitoproof WB Primer as part of complete Fosroc waterproofing packages and can advise on the correct primer-membrane pairing for each application.
