Fosroc Nitoproof 10
Water-based bitumen emulsion damp-proof membrane, vapour seal and curing membrane for below-ground concrete and foundations – solvent-free and dual-purpose.
What is it?
A single-component, water-based bitumen emulsion that dries to a black protective film, doubling as a damp-proof membrane (DPM), vapour seal and concrete curing membrane.
Where is it used?
Below-ground concrete, foundations, retaining walls, plinth beams, basement substructures and masonry where a low-cost barrier against ground moisture and groundwater salts is needed.
Why use it?
It is solvent-free with no fire hazard, economical, easy to brush or squeegee on, and performs two jobs at once – waterproofing and curing – which cuts both material and labour on a site.
How is it applied?
Brush, broom or squeegee onto a clean, sound substrate in one or two coats at 2.0-5.0 m2/litre, allowing a minimum of 2 hours between coats; a thinned first coat primes dusty surfaces.
About Fosroc Nitoproof 10
Fosroc Nitoproof 10 is a brown/black liquid blend of selected bitumens emulsified in water that dries to a tough, flexible protective film. It belongs to the long-established Nitoproof family of waterproofing products from Fosroc and is one of the most widely specified low-cost bituminous coatings on Indian construction sites. Because it is water-carried rather than solvent-carried, it contains no flammable solvent, has no associated fire risk during application, and releases no strong solvent odour – a practical advantage in enclosed substructure and basement work where ventilation is limited. The product is engineered to do two jobs from a single application. As a damp-proof membrane and vapour seal it forms a continuous barrier that stops capillary rise of ground moisture and water vapour through concrete and masonry. At the same coverage it also functions as a curing membrane, sealing in the mix water of freshly placed concrete so that proper hydration and strength development can take place – which is why Fosroc certifies it against the concrete-curing requirements of ASTM C309 when applied at 2 m2 per litre. For foundations, plinths, retaining walls and other below-ground elements, it provides an economical protective skin over the structural concrete. A defining strength of Nitoproof 10 in Indian ground conditions is its resistance to the chloride and sulphate ions commonly present in groundwater and aggressive soils, which would otherwise migrate into and attack the concrete. The coating bonds to a genuinely wide range of substrates – concrete, steel, cork and wood – making it versatile across the substructure package. It is not a high-build elastomeric membrane and is not intended for exposed roofs, ponded water or trafficked decks; rather, it occupies the value end of the waterproofing range where a reliable, fast, fuss-free barrier-plus-cure coat is what the specification calls for. Space Arc Engineering, an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator serving Delhi NCR and Pan-India, supplies Nitoproof 10 in 20 and 200 litre drums with technical guidance on substrate preparation and system selection.
The technical insight
The performance of Nitoproof 10 rests on the science of a bitumen-in-water emulsion. Selected bitumens are dispersed as fine droplets in water; once the coating is applied, the water evaporates and the bitumen droplets coalesce (“break”) into a continuous, water-impermeable film. This is why the substrate may be damp but must not be ponded, and why a thinned priming coat (Nitoproof 10 diluted with an equal quantity of clean water) is used to lock down dust and promote adhesion before full-strength coats. The film is defined by a bitumen content of 60%, which governs the final dry-film mass and barrier integrity. Two standards anchor its dual function: it meets ASTM C309-93 for liquid membrane-forming curing compounds when applied at 2 m2/litre – the tighter rate needed to retain mix water – and BS 6949:1991 for bituminous coatings. The wide coverage band of 2.0 to 5.0 m2/litre is therefore not a tolerance but a deliberate design choice: the lower end (richer film) is used where curing or maximum barrier is the priority, the higher end where a thinner protective skin suffices on a smooth substrate. A minimum 2-hour inter-coat interval lets each coat break and dry before the next is keyed on. Where the coating is to receive a screed, the final coat is blinded with clean, dry sharp sand while still wet to create a mechanical key – a detail that matters on basement floors and protected foundations.
Where it is used
- Damp-proof membrane (DPM) and vapour seal beneath concrete slabs and over masonry
- Protective coating for below-ground concrete – foundations, footings and plinth beams
- Concrete curing membrane on freshly placed concrete (applied at 2 m2/litre per ASTM C309)
- Protection of substructure concrete against chloride and sulphate ions in aggressive groundwater and soils
- Barrier coat on retaining walls and basement walls prior to backfilling
- Protective coating on steel, cork and wood elements in contact with damp ground
- Bond/blinded base coat under screeds when sanded while wet to provide a mechanical key
Key advantages
- Solvent-free, water-based formulation – no fire hazard during application and low odour
- Dual-purpose: works as both a waterproofing/protective coating and a concrete curing membrane, saving a separate cure operation
- Economical, making it well suited to large foundation and substructure areas
- Easy and fast to apply by brush, broom or squeegee with no specialist plant
- Resists chloride and sulphate ion attack from groundwater and aggressive soils
- Adheres to a wide range of substrates – concrete, steel, cork and wood
- Standards-backed: complies with ASTM C309-93 (curing) and BS 6949:1991 (bituminous coating)
- Can be applied to damp (though not ponded) substrates, suiting Indian site conditions
Limitations & considerations
- A thin-film bituminous coating, not a high-build elastomeric or crack-bridging membrane – not for structures with significant movement or cracking
- Not intended for permanently exposed surfaces, ponded water, roofs or trafficked decks
- Bitumblack coating: must be protected from physical damage and is normally covered/backfilled, not left as a finish
- Not flammable itself, but the associated cleaning Solvent 102 is flammable (flash point 33 C) and must be handled with care
- Must be protected from frost – storage below 10 C damages the emulsion; shelf life 12 months at 15-40 C
- Substrate must be sound, clean and free of oil/grease; dusty surfaces require a thinned priming coat first
- Contains bituminous material – possible risk of irreversible skin effects; PPE (gloves, eye/face protection) required
Selection & best practice
Start with substrate preparation: surfaces must be sound, clean and free of oil or grease, with any contamination removed using a proprietary chemical degreaser. If the surface is dusty, prime it first with one coat of Nitoproof 10 diluted with an equal quantity of cool, clean water and let it dry. Apply full-strength material by brush, broom or squeegee in one or two coats depending on the protection required, allowing a minimum of 2 hours between coats. Control your coverage to the duty: target around 2 m2/litre where the film must also cure the concrete or provide maximum barrier (ASTM C309 rate), opening up toward 5 m2/litre only on smooth substrates needing a lighter protective skin. Where a screed will be laid over the coating, blind the second coat with clean, dry sharp sand as soon as it is applied, then brush off the excess once dry to leave a mechanical key. Clean tools with water while the material is wet. Always protect the cured film from mechanical damage before backfilling, store drums between 15 and 40 C away from frost, and confirm the system against the current Fosroc datasheet – Space Arc Engineering can advise on the right Nitoproof grade for the exposure.

How we position Fosroc Nitoproof 10
Nitoproof 10 sits at the economical, entry level of Fosroc’s waterproofing range – a thin-film bituminous DPM and curing coat rather than a heavy-duty membrane. Within the Fosroc family it is the budget counterpart to bituminous brush/spray coatings such as Brushbond and the Nitoproof higher-build grades (for example Nitoproof 600/800 polyurethane and acrylic membranes, or Nitoproof A10), which should be specified where crack-bridging, elastomeric movement accommodation, or exposed/ponded-water duty is required. For positive-side basement tanking with high water heads, contractors typically step up to a reinforced or HDPE/torch-applied system rather than relying on a bitumen emulsion. Credible alternatives in the Indian market at this value tier include Dr. Fixit Primeseal / Bitumen-based coatings, Sika’s bituminous emulsions (e.g. Igolflex / SikaProof bitumen primers), MBS (MYK) bituminous coatings, and STP Limited’s bituminous DPM products. Where a job needs only a fast, solvent-free, dual-purpose waterproofing-plus-curing coat on below-ground concrete, Nitoproof 10 remains a sound, cost-effective choice; for anything subject to movement, exposure or significant water pressure, pair it with – or substitute – a higher-specification membrane.
