Fosroc Nitoseal MB333 (formerly Nitoseal 333)
Hot-applied, high-extension polymer-modified bitumen sealant to BS 2499:1993 Type N1 for sealing and maintaining joints in concrete carriageways and asphalt surfacing.
What is it?
A hot-poured, high-extension polymer-modified bitumen (rubberised bitumen) joint sealant complying with BS 2499:1993 Type N1, formerly marketed as Nitoseal 333.
Where is it used?
Expansion and contraction joints in concrete roads, highways, runways, hardstandings and bridge approaches, plus joints in and against asphalt/bituminous surfacing.
Why use it?
It accommodates 25% joint movement, returns the carriageway to traffic quickly, resists ingress of grit and dirt, and bonds well to both concrete and asphalt without specialist gun application.
How is it applied?
Melted in a thermostatically controlled boiler to 165-175 degC and poured into a clean, dry, primed joint (Fosroc Primer B2 on concrete) to 5-7 mm below the traffic surface.
About Fosroc Nitoseal MB333 (formerly Nitoseal 333)
Fosroc Nitoseal MB333, previously sold as Nitoseal 333, is a single-component, hot-applied joint sealant based on polymer-modified bitumen. It is supplied as a solid block that is melted on site and poured into prepared pavement joints, where it cools to form a tough yet flexible rubberised seal. The product is formulated to meet BS 2499:1993 Type N1, the British Standard for hot-applied joint sealants for concrete pavements, and is positioned for the high-traffic, high-abrasion environment of roads, highways and airfield pavements rather than for building facades or wet-area movement joints. For an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator such as Space Arc Engineering serving Delhi NCR and Pan-India, MB333 sits in the road and infrastructure end of the Fosroc sealant portfolio, alongside the cold-applied Colpor 200PF and the gun-grade Nitoseal/Thioflex chemistries. Its core role is to keep water, grit and incompressible debris out of the joint while still allowing the slab to expand and contract through daily and seasonal temperature cycles. Because it is hot-poured, a large length of joint can be sealed quickly and reopened to traffic almost as soon as the sealant has cooled, which makes it well suited to live carriageway maintenance and night-working windows. The material bonds to both concrete and asphalt, so it can be used at the interface between rigid concrete slabs and flexible bituminous overlays, a common detail on Indian highway and urban road projects. It is important to understand what MB333 is not: it is a pavement-grade bituminous sealant, not a polyurethane, polysulphide or silicone elastomer, and it is not intended for water-retaining structures, vertical joints, glazing, or chemically aggressive industrial floors.
The technical insight
The defining characteristic of Nitoseal MB333 is its chemistry and the constraints that flow from it. As a hot-applied polymer-modified bitumen to BS 2499 Type N1, it cures purely by physical cooling and solidification, not by a chemical reaction, so there is no pot life, no mixing of components and no extended cure period before trafficking; the practical control variable is temperature. The correct pouring window is a relatively narrow 165 to 175 degC, and the material should be poured at the upper limit, particularly in cold weather, to ensure adequate wetting and adhesion to the joint walls. Overheating, or repeated re-melting, degrades the polymer modifier and is the single most common cause of premature field failure, so a thermostatically controlled, oil-jacketed or indirect-heat boiler with agitation is strongly preferred over open-flame melting. The 25% movement accommodation factor (MAF) in butt joints is modest compared with elastomeric sealants (which reach 25-50% in ISO 11600 Class 25 grades), so joint width must be designed, per BS 6093 principles, so that the calculated movement stays within that 25% capacity. Adhesion depends entirely on substrate preparation: concrete joint faces must be sound, dry and primed with Fosroc Primer B2 with the solvent flashed off before pouring, whereas metal or steel-edged joints need no primer but should be warmed with a gas torch immediately before sealing. A backer rod or bond-breaker controls sealant depth and prevents three-sided adhesion. Critically, MB333 is bitumen-based and is therefore not compatible with tar or pitch-based materials, which soften and bleed into it.
Where it is used
- Transverse expansion and contraction joints in concrete (rigid pavement) carriageways and highways
- Longitudinal joints between adjacent concrete slabs or between concrete and asphalt lanes
- Joints in asphalt and bituminous surfacing on roads and urban streets
- Airfield runways, taxiways, aprons and hardstandings
- Toll plazas, weighbridges, bus depots and heavy industrial yard pavements
- Bridge approach slabs and joints between approach pavement and structure
- Car parks, container yards and port pavements subject to abrasion and trafficking
- Routine maintenance and resealing of existing deteriorated road joints
Key advantages
- Complies with BS 2499:1993 Type N1, a recognised British Standard for hot-applied pavement joint sealants
- Rapid return to service – reopens to traffic almost as soon as the sealant has cooled, ideal for live-road and night works
- High-extension polymer modification gives better flexibility and recovery than plain bitumen
- Accommodates 25% movement in butt joints to absorb daily and seasonal slab movement
- Bonds well to both concrete and asphalt, suiting concrete-to-bituminous interface joints
- Resists ingress of grit, dirt and water, protecting the joint and sub-base
- Single-component, no on-site mixing or measuring of hardener required
- Economical and fast for sealing long runs of carriageway joint
Limitations & considerations
- Modest 25% movement accommodation – not for wide or high-movement structural expansion joints needing elastomeric sealants
- Hot-applied only – requires a thermostatically controlled melting boiler and trained operatives; melt temperature must stay within 165-175 degC
- Not compatible with tar or pitch-based materials, which cause softening and bleeding
- Bituminous and black only – unsuitable where colour, aesthetics or non-staining performance matter (e.g. facades, decorative pavements)
- Not intended for water-retaining structures, potable water, vertical/overhead joints, glazing or chemical containment
- Performance is sensitive to substrate preparation; concrete faces must be sound, dry and primed with Primer B2
- Softens at elevated surface temperatures, so high-temperature working procedures are needed above about 35 degC ambient
- Can be degraded by fuel and oil spillage; a fuel-resistant grade should be specified for aprons and fuelling areas
Selection & best practice
Design the joint so the expected movement stays within the 25% MAF: follow BS 6093 width-to-movement principles and keep the joint within the usable range of 13 mm minimum to 30 mm maximum width (15 mm minimum to 25 mm maximum depth). Saw, clean and dry the joint, removing all laitance, curing compound and debris, then insert a closed-cell polyethylene backer rod or bond-breaker tape to set the sealant depth and prevent three-sided adhesion. Prime concrete faces with Fosroc Primer B2 and allow the solvent to fully evaporate before sealing; warm steel or metal joint edges with a gas torch immediately before pouring rather than priming. Melt the block in a thermostatically controlled, agitated boiler to 165-175 degC, never exceeding the upper limit and avoiding prolonged holding or repeated re-melting that degrades the polymer. Pour at the top of the temperature range in cold weather, filling the joint to 5-7 mm below the traffic surface (or to the specified level) so the seal is recessed from tyre contact and abrasion. Do not use against tar or pitch substrates, and adopt special procedures for ambient temperatures above 35 degC. Confirm the project specification, joint movement calculation and any fuel-resistance requirement with Space Arc before ordering.

How we position Fosroc Nitoseal MB333 (formerly Nitoseal 333)
Within the Fosroc sealant range, Nitoseal MB333 is the hot-applied, bituminous workhorse for trafficked horizontal pavement joints rather than a general-purpose building sealant. For higher-movement or premium cold-applied road joints, Fosroc Colpor 200PF (a polyurethane pavement sealant) is the natural step-up, while building and structural movement joints are better served by gun-grade Fosroc chemistries such as the Nitoseal PU range (polyurethane), Nitoseal MS series (MS-polymer) and Thioflex 600 (polysulphide). Among competitor products, the most credible alternatives for hot-applied pavement joints are hot-poured rubberised bitumen sealants from suppliers such as Sika and STP, with cold-applied polyurethane road sealants like Sika Sikaflex and BASF/MBS MasterSeal lines competing where higher movement or non-bituminous chemistry is specified; for elastomeric building joints the obvious counterparts are Sikaflex polyurethanes, MasterSeal polyurethanes and various MS-polymer and polysulphide sealants. The honest specification logic is to match chemistry and application method to the joint: choose MB333 when you need a fast, economical, BS 2499 Type N1 hot-pour seal for concrete and asphalt road joints with up to 25% movement, and move to a polyurethane, MS-polymer or polysulphide system when movement, colour, chemical exposure, vertical orientation or aesthetics rule bitumen out. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, can verify the current Fosroc datasheet, confirm fuel-resistance needs and advise on the correct sealant for the joint.
