About Fosroc Nitoseal PU40A

Fosroc Nitoseal PU40A is a one-part, moisture-curing, gun-grade polyurethane elastomeric joint sealant from the Nitoseal PU40 family (the product was formerly marketed as Nitoseal HP40). It is supplied ready to use and cures by reaction with atmospheric humidity to form a tough, flexible rubber that bridges the joint and absorbs the cyclic movement that occurs as a structure expands, contracts, settles and is loaded by wind and traffic vibration. Because it is a single-component product, there is no on-site mixing, no pot-life pressure and very little wastage — the applicator simply loads a sachet or cartridge into the gun and extrudes the bead.\n\nThe ‘PU40’ designation places it as the low-modulus polyurethane workhorse in Fosroc’s sealant range, sitting between the higher-performance MS-polymer products (Nitoseal MS range) and the heavy-duty pavement-grade pourable sealants. As a low-modulus sealant it imposes low stress back onto the joint arrises, which is exactly what is wanted on porous substrates such as concrete and brick where excessive stress can tear the substrate before it tears the sealant. After application a tack-free skin forms within roughly two hours under normal site conditions, with full through-cure progressing at about 3 mm depth per 24 hours — so the cure profile is governed by temperature and humidity, both of which are abundant across most of India for much of the year. For Indian contractors, consultants and procurement teams, PU40A is a dependable, mid-priced general-purpose building sealant for vertical and non-trafficked horizontal joints where a proven polyurethane chemistry with international standard compliance is specified. Space Arc Engineering supplies it as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and pan-India, with technical support on joint design, primer selection and substrate compatibility.

The technical insight

The defining number is the 25% movement accommodation factor (MAF) — Nitoseal PU40A is classified ISO 11600 Type F 25LM (Facade-grade, 25% movement, Low Modulus) and ASTM C920 Class 25, Grade NS (non-sag), Use NT/M/O/A. In practice that means a correctly designed joint can safely absorb a total movement of 25% of its installed width: a 20 mm wide joint can therefore accommodate roughly 5 mm of combined compression and extension. This is why joint width must be sized from the calculated thermal and structural movement, not chosen for convenience. The non-sag (NS) classification confirms it holds its shape in vertical and overhead joints without slumping, distinguishing it from pourable horizontal-joint sealants. The ‘low modulus’ character is the second critical property — the cured rubber stretches under low force (Shore A hardness in the mid-20s to mid-30s), so it transfers minimal tension into the bond line and the parent substrate, protecting weak concrete arrises. Cure is moisture-driven and irreversible; the skinning time of about two hours sets the window for tooling, after which surface disturbance risks marring the skin. Service temperature tolerance is broad (down to about -40°C and up to 70–100°C depending on the datasheet revision), comfortably covering Indian climatic extremes from Himalayan winters to coastal and desert summers.

Where it is used

  • Expansion and control (movement) joints in concrete frames, slabs, parapets and copings
  • Precast concrete panel joints and tilt-up wall joints on facades
  • Perimeter sealing around door frames, window frames and curtain-wall interfaces
  • Joints between dissimilar materials with different expansion coefficients (e.g. concrete to metal, masonry to stone cladding)
  • Stone, granite and ceramic cladding joints (with adhesion/staining testing on decorative stone)
  • Steps, risers, copings and non-trafficked roof joints
  • Brickwork, blockwork and masonry control joints
  • Sealing of construction and contraction joints with a bond-breaker tape or back-up strip

Key advantages

  • Single-component, ready-to-use — no mixing, no pot life, minimal wastage on site
  • 25% movement accommodation (ISO 11600 25LM / ASTM C920 Class 25) for genuine moving joints
  • Low modulus — low stress on the joint arris, ideal for concrete and masonry substrates
  • Strong adhesion to most common building substrates, usually without a primer
  • Non-sag gun grade — holds bead shape in vertical and overhead joints
  • UV-stable and weather-resistant for exposed facade and external joints
  • Wide service temperature range suited to Indian climatic extremes
  • Internationally certified (ISO 11600, ASTM C920, US Fed Spec TT-S-00230a) for specification confidence
  • Available in sachets and cartridges for both large-volume and small-scale work

Limitations & considerations

  • Not suitable for permanently water-immersed conditions — use an MS-polymer such as Nitoseal MS600 instead
  • Not suitable for trafficked floor or deck joints subject to wheel loads or abrasion — use a trafficable grade such as Nitoseal MS300 or a pavement-grade sealant
  • Not for contact with bituminous materials, solvents, oils or petrol
  • Contains isocyanates; cured film and uncured product require standard PU handling precautions
  • Should not be applied below 5°C or to frost-bearing surfaces
  • May stain porous decorative stone — use a non-staining MS sealant (e.g. Nitoseal MS100) where staining is critical
  • Some colour change can occur on long-term exterior exposure (cosmetic only, no loss of physical performance)
  • Highly absorbent and high-movement or intermittently-immersed joints require priming (Fosroc Primer 7 / Primer 4)
  • Over-coating can reduce the joint’s movement capability and must use a compatible flexible coating

Selection & best practice

Design the joint before specifying the sealant. Size the joint width from the calculated thermal and structural movement so that the expected movement stays within the 25% MAF — for a non-porous substrate keep a minimum bead depth of about 5 mm and for porous concrete/brick a minimum of about 10 mm, always working to an optimum width-to-depth ratio of 2:1 so the bead is roughly twice as wide as it is deep. Control depth and create the essential bond-breaker at the back of the slot with a closed-cell backer rod (Fosroc Hydrocell XL / Expandafoam) or a bond-breaker tape — the sealant must adhere to only two faces so it can flex freely across its full width. Ensure joint faces are square, sound, clean, dry and frost-free; remove laitance, dust, rust and old sealant by wire-brushing, grinding or grit-blasting. Prime only where the datasheet calls for it (highly absorbent, high-movement or intermittently-immersed joints) using Fosroc Primer 7 for porous and Primer 4 for non-porous substrates, and observe the primer’s open time. Gun the bead firmly to avoid air entrapment and tool it flush within a few minutes of application, using clean water only — never detergent or soap solutions, which interfere with adhesion. Always run a site adhesion/compatibility trial on the actual substrate, and on decorative stone test for staining before full application.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Nitoseal PU40A a polyurethane or polysulphide sealant?
It is a one-part polyurethane (PU) sealant. It cures by reaction with atmospheric moisture to form a low-modulus flexible rubber, and it is non-sag gun grade so it can be used in vertical and overhead joints, not just horizontal ones.
How much joint movement can Nitoseal PU40A accommodate?
It has a 25% movement accommodation factor and is classified ISO 11600 25LM and ASTM C920 Class 25. As a rule of thumb, a correctly designed 20 mm joint can absorb around 5 mm of total combined compression and extension, provided the joint is sized for the calculated movement and tooled to a 2:1 width-to-depth ratio.
Does Nitoseal PU40A need a primer?
For most common substrates a primer is not normally required, which is one of the product’s advantages. Priming is recommended only for highly absorbent substrates, high-movement joints, or joints subject to intermittent immersion — use Fosroc Primer 7 on porous surfaces and Primer 4 on non-porous surfaces, and always run a site adhesion trial.
Can Nitoseal PU40A be used in water-immersed or trafficked floor joints?
No. It is not suitable for permanent water immersion (use Nitoseal MS600 instead) or for trafficked floor and deck joints exposed to wheel loads and abrasion (use a trafficable grade such as Nitoseal MS300 or a pavement-grade sealant). PU40A is intended for vertical, perimeter and non-trafficked joints.
What joint dimensions and backer rod should be used with PU40A?
Apply to joints typically 5–35 mm wide (wider joints should be referred to Fosroc), at a 2:1 width-to-depth ratio with a minimum depth of about 5 mm on non-porous and 10 mm on porous substrates. Use a closed-cell backer rod (e.g. Fosroc Hydrocell XL / Expandafoam) or bond-breaker tape so the sealant bonds to only two faces and can flex over its full width.
What are the pack sizes, shelf life and colours available in India?
It is supplied in 600 ml sachets (10 per box) and 310 ml cartridges, with a 12-month shelf life when stored unopened in cool, dry conditions out of direct sunlight. A range of colours is available — confirm the current palette with Fosroc. Space Arc Engineering supplies it as an authorised Fosroc distributor across Delhi NCR and pan-India.

How we position Fosroc Nitoseal PU40A

Within Fosroc’s joint-sealant range, Nitoseal PU40A is the general-purpose, mid-priced polyurethane choice for moving facade and perimeter joints — the reliable default where a 25% low-modulus PU is specified and neither water immersion nor traffic is involved. Step up to the MS-polymer Nitoseal MS range (MS600 for immersed and demanding joints, MS300 for trafficked floor joints, MS100 as a non-staining option for decorative stone) when those harsher exposures apply, since MS-polymers offer better staining behaviour, paintability and immersion resistance. For horizontal pavement and floor joints carrying traffic, Fosroc’s pourable Colpor-grade sealants are the correct family rather than a gun-grade product like PU40A. Earlier-generation polysulphide sealants (the Thioflex line) cover specialist chemical-resistance and fuel-resistance niches but are generally being superseded by PU and MS technology for routine building joints. Among credible alternatives commonly available in India, Sika’s Sikaflex range (e.g. Sikaflex Construction AP / Pro) and MBCC/Master Builders Solutions MasterSeal (e.g. MasterSeal NP-series) offer directly comparable one-part PU and hybrid sealants, while STP Limited supplies competing polyurethane and polysulphide joint sealants. Specifiers should match on movement class (ISO 11600 25LM / ASTM C920 Class 25), modulus and substrate compatibility rather than brand alone — and always verify adhesion on the actual project substrate before committing.
