What is it?

A one-part, moisture-curing, non-sag (gun-grade) polyurethane elastomeric joint sealant. The ‘CS’ denotes Fosroc’s Constructive Solutions range, certified to ASTM C920 Class 25 with ±25% movement accommodation.

Where is it used?

Expansion, control and movement joints in precast and in-situ concrete, balcony and parapet joints, bridge culverts, retaining and boundary walls, roof joints, and perimeter caulking around windows, doors, skirtings and floor joints.

Why use it?

It seals dynamic joints that flex with thermal and structural movement, stays watertight and weatherproof, resists UV and chemicals, can be over-painted, and bonds to most common building substrates with little or no priming.

How is it applied?

Gun-applied from a 600 ml sausage into a clean, dry, backer-rod-controlled joint at the correct 2:1 width-to-depth ratio, tooled to a firm contact, then left to skin in ~2 hours and cure at ~3 mm per 24 hours.

About Fosroc Nitoseal PU40-CS

Fosroc Nitoseal PU40-CS is a one-component, moisture-curing polyurethane elastomeric sealant in the gun-grade, non-sag class — meaning it is extruded from a cartridge or sausage and holds its shape in vertical and overhead joints without slumping. The “CS” suffix identifies it as part of Fosroc’s Constructive Solutions portfolio, the variant tested and declared against ASTM C920-14a (Type S, single-component; Grade NS, non-sag; Class 25). It sits in the same Nitoseal polyurethane family as the general-purpose Nitoseal PU40, and is positioned for projects that need a documented Class 25 performance certification on movement joints.

The chemistry is a single-component polyurethane that cures by reacting with atmospheric moisture. Once gunned and tooled, the surface forms a skin within roughly two hours at 20°C and 50% relative humidity, after which it continues to cure inward at approximately 3 mm per 24 hours to develop a tough, resilient rubber-like seal. The cured sealant is highly elastic with good recovery, allowing it to repeatedly extend and compress as the joint cycles through daily and seasonal movement. It accommodates joint movement of up to ±25% of the original joint width, adheres to most common construction substrates, resists UV, weathering, chemicals and micro-organisms, and can be over-painted after curing — a practical advantage on architectural facades and visible joints.

For Indian contractors, consultants and procurement teams, Nitoseal PU40-CS is a workhorse joint sealant where a single product must cope with structural movement, water exposure and exterior weathering. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering supplies the genuine material together with the matching Fosroc primers and backer rods, and provides specification and application support so the joint is detailed and installed to deliver the certified movement and durability performance.

The technical insight

The critical engineering parameter is the Movement Accommodation Factor (MAF). Nitoseal PU40-CS is a Class 25 sealant, meaning it is qualified to accommodate ±25% of the designed joint width — so a 20 mm joint can absorb roughly ±5 mm of movement before the sealant or its bond is overstressed. This figure only holds if the joint is dimensioned and detailed correctly: the designed joint width must be calculated from the substrate’s coefficient of thermal expansion, the element length between joints, and the expected temperature swing, then matched to the sealant’s ±25% capacity. Because polyurethanes perform best when the seal can stretch in two directions only (the two joint faces), a bond breaker or closed-cell backer rod is essential to prevent three-sided adhesion — if the sealant grips the joint base as well as both sides, the back face cannot move and the sealant tears internally. Maintaining the recommended 2:1 width-to-depth ratio keeps the sealant bead thin enough to flex yet thick enough to bond, and the cure-from-the-surface-inward mechanism (~3 mm/24h) means deep beads in non-porous joints take days, not hours, to fully cure — a scheduling factor on water-retaining and immersed work.

Where it is used

  • Expansion and control joints in precast concrete construction
  • Movement joints in in-situ reinforced concrete structures
  • Balcony and parapet joints on residential and commercial facades
  • Bridge culverts, abutments and infrastructure movement joints
  • Retaining walls and boundary/compound walls
  • Roof and terrace joints requiring a weatherproof flexible seal
  • Perimeter caulking around window and door frames
  • Joints at skirtings, wall-to-floor junctions and floor joints (non-trafficked / light duty)
  • Joints subject to intermittent water contact when correctly primed

Key advantages

  • Single-component — ready to use straight from the sausage, no on-site mixing and minimal wastage
  • ±25% movement accommodation (ASTM C920 Class 25) for dynamic joints
  • Non-sag, gun-grade consistency holds shape in vertical and overhead joints
  • Cures by atmospheric moisture to a tough, highly resilient elastomer with good recovery
  • Strong adhesion to most common building substrates, often without a primer
  • Over-paintable after curing — suits visible architectural and facade joints
  • Excellent UV, weathering and ageing resistance for exterior exposure
  • Good resistance to chemicals and micro-organisms
  • Available in Grey and White to blend with concrete and lighter finishes

Limitations & considerations

  • Not designed for continuous water immersion — suited to intermittent water contact only when correctly primed
  • Not a trafficked-floor / heavy point-load sealant; for such floor joints use a Fosroc trafficable PU or epoxy joint system (e.g. Nitoseal PU400 / Colpor type)
  • Should not be applied below 5°C; cold or very humid conditions slow the cure
  • Cure proceeds inward at ~3 mm per 24 hours, so deep beads need several days to fully develop strength
  • Requires a bond breaker / backer rod and correct joint width-to-depth ratio to perform — three-sided adhesion causes premature failure
  • Polyurethanes can chalk/discolour over very long UV exposure where colour-critical; an MS-polymer or pigment-stable system may be preferred for high-aesthetic facades
  • Limited standard colour range (Grey and White)
  • Substrate must be sound, clean, dry and frost-free; oily, dusty or laitance-coated surfaces compromise adhesion

Selection & best practice

Design the joint before specifying the sealant: size the joint width so that the expected movement stays within ±25% of that width, then apply Nitoseal PU40-CS at a 2:1 width-to-depth ratio (for a 20 mm wide joint, target roughly 10 mm of sealant depth). Set the depth with a closed-cell polyethylene backer rod sized about 25% larger than the joint width so it stays compressed; where the joint is too shallow for a rod, use a bond-breaker tape so the sealant bonds only to the two faces, never to the joint base. Prepare substrates to be sound, clean, dry and free of dust, laitance, oil and curing compounds. A primer is not normally required, but for joints subject to high movement or intermittent immersion prime first — Fosroc Primer 7 on porous substrates (concrete, masonry; ~30 min drying) and Fosroc Primer 4 on non-porous substrates (metal, glass; ~2-5 min). Gun the sealant in a continuous bead, avoiding air entrapment, and tool firmly within the skinning window (~2 hours at 20°C) to wet the joint faces and achieve a concave profile. Apply only above 5°C, protect fresh joints from water and traffic during the early cure, and allow for the ~3 mm/24h cure rate in the programme.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Nitoseal PU40-CS a polyurethane or polysulphide sealant?
It is a one-component polyurethane (PU) elastomeric sealant that cures with atmospheric moisture. It is gun-grade and non-sag, so it holds its shape in vertical and overhead joints. It is not a polysulphide — Fosroc’s polysulphide options sit under the Thioflex range.
How much joint movement can it handle?
Nitoseal PU40-CS is an ASTM C920 Class 25 sealant, qualified for ±25% of the original joint width. On a correctly designed and primed joint, a 20 mm wide joint can absorb in the order of ±5 mm of movement. Correct joint sizing and a bond breaker/backer rod are essential to realise this.
Do I need a primer with Nitoseal PU40-CS?
A primer is not normally required on sound, clean, dry substrates. However, for joints subject to high movement or intermittent immersion, prime first — Fosroc Primer 7 on porous substrates such as concrete and masonry, and Fosroc Primer 4 on non-porous substrates such as metal and glass.
What joint width and depth should I design for?
It suits joints from 2 mm to 35 mm wide and 2 mm to 20 mm deep, applied at a 2:1 width-to-depth ratio. Use a closed-cell backer rod to control depth and create a bond breaker so the sealant bonds only to the two joint faces. For widths beyond 35 mm, consult Fosroc technical service.
What colours and pack size is it supplied in?
Standard colours are Grey and White, supplied in 600 ml sausages for use with a sausage gun. Grey is the common choice for concrete joints and White for lighter finishes; it can also be over-painted after curing to match the surrounding surface.
Can it be used for trafficked floor joints or continuous water immersion?
No. Nitoseal PU40-CS is a building and expansion-joint sealant, not a heavy-duty trafficable floor sealant, and it is not intended for continuous immersion. For trafficked floor joints use a Fosroc trafficable PU or epoxy joint system such as Nitoseal PU400 / Colpor; for permanently immersed joints discuss a suitable system with Space Arc Engineering.

How we position Fosroc Nitoseal PU40-CS

Within the Fosroc sealant range, Nitoseal PU40-CS is the gun-grade polyurethane choice for moving building and expansion joints where a documented ASTM C920 Class 25 (±25%) performance is required. It is closely related to the general-purpose Nitoseal PU40 (ISO 11600 F 25LM), sharing the same PU chemistry; choose between them based on the certification a consultant specifies. For non-sag movement joints needing a polysulphide instead of PU, Fosroc’s Thioflex 600 is the established alternative, while heavy-duty trafficked and bridge floor joints are better served by Colpor 200PF or Nitoseal PU400. Where a permanently flexible, low-modulus PU is needed, Nitoseal PU40 LM applies. Against competitor brands, the most common equivalents on Indian projects are Sika’s Sikaflex polyurethane sealants (e.g. Sikaflex PRO and Sikaflex Construction AP), MBCC/Master Builders Solutions MasterSeal NP polyurethane sealants, and STP/Choksey PU joint sealants — all broadly comparable Class 25 single-component PUs. Nitoseal PU40-CS earns its place where a project is already specified to Fosroc, needs the matching Fosroc primer and backer-rod system, and benefits from local supply and applicator support — which Space Arc Engineering provides as an authorised Fosroc distributor across Delhi NCR and Pan-India. For continuous-immersion, sanitary, or colour-critical high-aesthetic facades, an MS-polymer (e.g. Fosroc Nitoseal MS) or a specialist immersion-grade sealant may be the better technical fit.
