Fosroc Nitoseal PU888
High-movement, fuel- and oil-resistant polyurethane joint sealant engineered for concrete pavements, runways, aprons and fuelling areas — machine-applied for fast, durable, return-to-service joints.
What is it?
A polyurethane-based elastomeric joint sealant from Fosroc, formulated to resist fuel, oil and hydraulic-fluid spillage while accommodating high cyclic movement in concrete pavement joints. It is designed for efficient machine (bulk) application.
Where is it used?
Expansion, construction and contraction joints in concrete roads, runways, taxiways, aprons, hard-standings, oil terminals, garage forecourts, parking decks, cargo and aircraft-fuelling areas.
Why use it?
It combines hydrocarbon resistance with high movement accommodation and a fast cure / quick return to service — the three properties most pavement joints in fuelled environments need but ordinary building sealants cannot deliver together.
How is it applied?
Joints are cleaned and dried, a closed-cell backer rod is fitted to control depth and act as a bond breaker, the recommended Fosroc primer is applied to the joint faces, and PU888 is gun- or machine-applied and tooled flush, then left to cure.
About Fosroc Nitoseal PU888
Fosroc Nitoseal PU888 is a polyurethane (PU) joint sealant developed specifically for the harsh service conditions found on trafficked concrete pavements that are also exposed to fuel and oil. It belongs to Fosroc’s well-established Nitoseal sealant family and sits in the fuel-resistant pavement group alongside products such as the cold-applied, self-levelling Nitoseal PU150 SL and the polysulphide Thioflex 600. Where a standard building or facade sealant would soften, swell or break down on contact with hydrocarbons, PU888 is engineered to withstand spillage of fuel, oil and hydraulic fluid while continuing to move with the joint.
The product cures from a workable paste into a tough, resilient elastomeric rubber that bonds to the prepared concrete arrises and stretches and compresses as the slabs expand and contract through daily and seasonal temperature cycles. Fosroc highlights three practical strengths on its official product page: high movement accommodation, fuel/oil/hydraulic-fluid resistance, and a fast cure with quick return to service. Critically for large infrastructure jobs, PU888 is designed for machine (bulk) application and offers high extrusion rates even at low temperatures, so crews can keep working through cool early-morning windows and seal long runs of joint efficiently and safely.
For Indian projects, this makes PU888 a logical specification for airport airside works, defence airfields, fuel depots, logistics yards, petrol-pump forecourts, port and container terminals and any concrete pavement where hydrocarbon contact is expected. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator serving Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering supplies PU888 with the correct Fosroc primers and ancillaries, and can advise on joint design, substrate preparation and application so the installed sealant performs to its full service life. Always confirm the latest grade, colour, pack and primer details against the current Fosroc Technical Data Sheet (TDS) for your region before ordering.
The technical insight
The defining engineering challenge PU888 solves is that ordinary one-part polyurethane and most silicone sealants are attacked by hydrocarbons — they swell, soften and lose adhesion when fuel or oil sits in the joint. PU888 is formulated so the cured polymer network resists that attack while still behaving as a low-to-medium-modulus elastomer that can absorb the wide, repeated movements typical of large concrete bays. In practice, sealant performance is governed less by the tube and more by joint design: the movement a sealant can survive is expressed as its Movement Accommodation Factor (MAF), and the actual movement a joint imposes is a function of slab length, the coefficient of thermal expansion of concrete and the temperature swing. If the designed joint movement exceeds the sealant’s MAF, even the best product fails. That is why PU888 is paired with a correctly sized closed-cell backer rod (such as Fosroc Hydrocell or an equivalent backing rod) that both sets the sealant depth and creates a two-sided bond breaker, allowing the sealant to flex across its full width instead of being locked on three faces. Priming the prepared, dust-free, dry concrete arris with the Fosroc-recommended primer is what secures long-term adhesion under traffic and fuel exposure — skip it and the bond is the first thing to go.

- High movement accommodation for wide, actively moving pavement joints
- Fast cure and quick return to service, reducing pavement downtime
- Designed for machine / bulk application, enabling efficient sealing of long joint runs
- High extrusion rates at low temperatures, extending the workable application window
- Cures to a tough, durable, abrasion-tolerant elastomer with long service life
- Backed by Fosroc’s technical support and Space Arc’s local application expertise in India
Limitations & considerations
- Not a general-purpose facade or building sealant — it is optimised for trafficked, fuel-exposed pavement joints
- Requires correct joint design (width:depth ratio, backer rod) and priming; poor preparation is the most common cause of failure
- Joint width must stay within the manufacturer’s stated range and within the product’s movement accommodation factor
- Polyurethane chemistry contains isocyanate components — follow PPE and ventilation guidance in the SDS
- Substrates must be clean, sound and dry; cannot be applied to frost-bearing, damp or contaminated joints
- Colour range is typically limited to pavement-appropriate shades (e.g. grey/black) — confirm on the current TDS
- Exact published figures (MAF %, Shore A, cure times, pack sizes) vary by region/version — always verify against the latest Fosroc TDS
Selection & best practice
Design every moving joint to keep imposed movement within the sealant’s movement accommodation factor, and detail it to an optimum 2:1 width-to-depth ratio (with the minimum sealant depths Fosroc specifies for porous concrete). Saw or form the joint to a clean, square profile, then remove all dust, laitance, oil, curing-compound residue and old sealant by mechanical means so you are bonding to sound concrete. Fit a correctly sized closed-cell backer rod (e.g. Fosroc Hydrocell / backing rod) to set the depth and provide a two-sided bond breaker — never let the sealant adhere to the joint base. Prime the dry, prepared arrises with the Fosroc-recommended primer for the substrate and seal within the primer’s stated overcoat window. Apply PU888 by gun or machine, working it firmly against both faces to avoid voids, then tool flush and remove masking before skinning. Mask edges for a neat finish, protect fresh sealant from traffic until cured, and always work to the current Fosroc TDS and SDS for the exact primer, dimensions and cure data.

How we position Fosroc Nitoseal PU888
Within Fosroc’s own range, Nitoseal PU888 occupies the fuel-resistant pavement niche. It is distinct from Nitoseal PU40 (a general one-part PU movement/building sealant) and the high-modulus epoxy-urethane Nitoseal PU800 (for tough internal, limited-movement joints), and it is the gun/machine-applied counterpart to the cold-applied, self-levelling Nitoseal PU150 SL. For horizontal pouring-grade pavement work, Fosroc’s Colpor 200PF (a tough fuel-resistant pouring grade) and the two-part polysulphide Thioflex 600 (fuel-resistant, ±25% MAF) are close stablemates, while Nitoseal SC800 is the silicone-rubber alternative used on roads and runways. Against competitor products, specifiers commonly weigh PU888 alongside Sika’s Sikaflex fuel-resistant PU pavement sealants (e.g. the Sikaflex PRO / pavement range), MBCC/Master Builders MasterSeal joint sealants, and Indian specialists such as STP Ltd for hot- and cold-applied pavement sealants. The right choice depends on the joint movement, traffic, whether the joint is horizontal or vertical, the degree of fuel exposure and the application method available on site. Space Arc Engineering can review your joint schedule and recommend the most cost-effective Fosroc solution — PU888 or an alternative in the Nitoseal/Thioflex/Colpor family — and supply it with the correct primers and ancillaries Pan-India.
