What is it?

A three-component, cold-applied flexibilised polyester-based joint sealant (formerly Nitoseal 290) that pours or guns into horizontal slots and cures to a tough, resilient seal with a limited degree of movement.

Where is it used?

Horizontal expansion and stress-relief joints in concrete and asphalt pavements, highways, car parks, hardstandings, loading bays, industrial floors and trafficked external slabs.

Why use it?

It bonds to concrete, asphalt and steel with no primer in dry or damp conditions, cures fast at 20°C and above (and even below freezing), and resists de-icing salts, hydrocarbons and chemicals, so traffic disruption is minimised.

How is it applied?

Saw-cut or form the joint, clean and remove laitance, fit a backer rod or bond breaker to set depth, mix the three components, then pour or gun the self-levelling sealant flush into the horizontal slot.

About Fosroc Nitoseal PE290

Fosroc Nitoseal PE290 (the current designation for the product formerly sold as Nitoseal 290) is a three-component, cold-applied joint sealant built on a flexibilised polyester resin system. Once the base, hardener and filler components are combined, it cures to a tough, resilient seal that accommodates a limited degree of joint movement while standing up to repeated traffic loading. It is formulated specifically for horizontal joints: the mixed material is self-levelling and can be poured, or gun-applied, directly into saw-cut or formed slots in concrete and asphalt surfaces, where it flows out to a flush, hard-wearing finish.

What sets PE290 apart from conventional building sealants is its pavement and infrastructure focus. It develops excellent adhesion to concrete, asphalt and steel and, importantly for Indian site conditions, requires no separate primer on well-prepared substrates whether they are dry or damp. That single feature removes a labour step and a common source of bond failure on busy carriageways and yards where surfaces are rarely bone-dry. The cured sealant offers good resistance to chemicals, de-icing salts and hydrocarbons such as diesel and oil spillage, which makes it well suited to roads, fuel-handling areas, parking decks and industrial floors.

PE290 is engineered for rapid turnaround. It cures quickly at 20°C and above, which is the typical ambient range across most of India for much of the year, allowing joints to be returned to service and traffic re-opened with minimal downtime. Unusually for a cold-applied sealant, it can also be installed at low temperatures and will continue to cure below freezing, making it a practical choice for high-altitude and winter projects in the Himalayan belt and northern hill states. It is supplied in two colours to suit the substrate: black for asphalt and grey for concrete, giving a tidy, colour-matched joint line. As a distributor and applicator product, Space Arc Engineering positions PE290 for clients who need a durable, fast-curing horizontal joint seal for pavements and trafficked slabs rather than a high-movement facade or building sealant.

The technical insight

The key to specifying PE290 correctly is understanding its chemistry class. It is a polyester-based sealant, not a polyurethane, polysulphide or silicone, and not a hot-poured bitumen. That places it in a particular performance niche: it cures to a tough, hard-wearing, resilient body that excels at carrying traffic and resisting fuels and salts, but it is designed for joints with a limited degree of movement rather than the high cyclic movement that an elastomeric polyurethane or polysulphide handles. Fosroc describes the movement capability qualitatively as limited rather than publishing a single ISO 11600 movement accommodation factor, so designers should treat PE290 as a low-movement, traffic-grade pavement sealant and verify the exact movement figure against the current region-specific datasheet for any joint approaching its limit. Because it is self-levelling, it is strictly a horizontal-joint product; it is not a non-sag gun grade for vertical or overhead work. The three-component format (resin base, curing agent and graded filler) means full-batch mixing discipline is essential, partial batches risk under-cure. The no-primer adhesion to damp concrete, asphalt and steel is a genuine site advantage, but it still depends on sound, clean, laitance-free joint faces.

Where it is used

  • Sealing horizontal expansion and contraction joints in concrete road and highway pavements
  • Joint sealing in asphalt and bituminous wearing courses where a flush, trafficable seal is required
  • Car parks, multi-storey parking decks, loading bays and ramps subject to vehicle traffic
  • Industrial floor joints and external hardstandings exposed to oil, diesel and chemical spillage
  • Airfield-style hardstandings, yards and service areas where fuel and de-icing salt resistance matters
  • Cold-region and high-altitude pavement joints where the sealant must cure at low or sub-zero temperatures
  • Repair and re-sealing of degraded horizontal joints during pavement rehabilitation works

Key advantages

  • No primer required on well-prepared concrete, asphalt or steel in dry or damp conditions, saving a labour step
  • Bonds reliably to concrete, asphalt and steel for mixed-substrate pavement joints
  • Fast cure at 20°C and above minimises road and yard closure time
  • Can be applied and will cure at low temperatures, including below freezing, extending the working season
  • Self-levelling pour-or-gun application gives a flush, neat horizontal joint finish
  • Good resistance to chemicals, de-icing salts and hydrocarbons such as diesel and oil
  • Tough, resilient cured seal that withstands repeated trafficking
  • Wide service temperature range of -30°C to +80°C suits diverse Indian climates
  • Two colours (black for asphalt, grey for concrete) for a colour-matched joint line

Limitations & considerations

  • Suitable only for horizontal joints because it is self-levelling, it cannot be used on vertical or overhead joints
  • Designed for a limited degree of movement, not for high-movement structural or facade joints
  • Three-component system requires accurate, full-batch on-site mixing, partial batches risk incomplete cure
  • Fosroc publishes movement capability qualitatively rather than as a single ISO 11600 MAF, so high-demand joints need design verification against the current datasheet
  • Polyester chemistry gives a harder, less elastomeric seal than polyurethane or polysulphide alternatives
  • Joint faces must still be clean, sound and free of laitance, dust and loose material despite the no-primer claim
  • Not the correct choice for potable-water tanks, sanitary movement joints or weatherproofing building facades
  • Shelf life is limited (around 6 months) and stock must be stored cool and dry

Selection & best practice

Design the joint before ordering. PE290 is a horizontal, low-movement pavement sealant, so confirm the joint is genuinely low-movement and that a self-levelling product suits the orientation. Saw-cut or form the slot to the design width, then control depth with a closed-cell polyethylene backer rod (or a bond-breaker tape where depth is shallow) so the sealant bonds only to the two opposing faces and not to the joint base, this two-sided bond is what lets the seal flex without tearing. As a general rule for pouring-grade pavement sealants, keep the sealant depth shallower than the width (a width-to-depth ratio of roughly 2:1 for wider joints, with a sensible minimum depth for narrow saw-cuts) and always follow the width-to-depth schedule in the current PE290 datasheet. Prepare faces mechanically to expose sound substrate and remove all laitance, curing compound, dust, oil and loose material; although no primer is needed on dry or damp concrete, asphalt or steel, adhesion still depends on a clean, sound face. Mix all three components fully in the supplied ratio, never split a pack, and pour or gun promptly within the working time, slightly overfilling so the self-levelling material settles flush. Time the work to exploit the fast cure above 20°C to reopen traffic quickly, and for cold or sub-zero sites take advantage of its low-temperature cure while still protecting fresh joints from standing water until set.

Frequently asked questions

What type of sealant is Fosroc Nitoseal PE290?
It is a three-component, cold-applied flexibilised polyester-based joint sealant, formerly marketed as Nitoseal 290. It is a self-levelling pouring grade for horizontal joints, not a polyurethane, polysulphide or silicone, and it cures to a tough, resilient, trafficable seal with a limited degree of movement.
Does Nitoseal PE290 need a primer?
No. One of its main advantages is that it requires no separate primer on well-prepared concrete, asphalt or steel, in both dry and damp conditions. Joint faces must still be sound, clean and free of laitance, dust, oil and loose material for the bond to perform.
Can PE290 be used on vertical joints or building facades?
No. Because it is self-levelling, PE290 is strictly a horizontal-joint product. For vertical, overhead or high-movement facade joints you need a non-sag gun-grade elastomeric sealant such as a polyurethane or polysulphide, not PE290.
How much movement can it accommodate?
Fosroc describes its movement capability qualitatively as a limited degree of movement and positions it as a low-movement pavement sealant rather than publishing a single ISO 11600 movement accommodation factor. For joints approaching their movement limit, verify the exact figure against the current region-specific datasheet before specifying.
What surfaces and applications is it designed for?
It is made for horizontal joints in concrete and asphalt pavements, highways, car parks, hardstandings, loading bays and industrial floors, including areas subject to oil, diesel, chemical and de-icing salt exposure. It bonds to concrete, asphalt and steel.
What colours and service temperatures does it offer?
PE290 is available in black for asphalt and grey for concrete, giving a colour-matched joint line. The cured sealant has a service temperature range of -30°C to +80°C, and it can be applied and cured at low temperatures, even below freezing.

How we position Fosroc Nitoseal PE290

Within Fosroc’s joint-sealant range, Nitoseal PE290 occupies a specific niche: a fast-curing, polyester-based, low-movement pouring sealant for horizontal pavement and floor joints, prized for its no-primer adhesion to damp concrete and asphalt and its resistance to fuels and de-icing salts. It is not interchangeable with Fosroc’s higher-movement options. For elastomeric, higher-movement building, civil and floor joints, the polysulphide Thioflex 600 (available in gun and pouring grades) is the usual choice, while Colpor 200PF is the specialist cold-applied pavement and runway sealant with around 25% movement accommodation and jet-blast/fuel resistance for airfields and fuel-spillage areas. Across the wider Nitoseal family, products such as Nitoseal MS600 (hybrid SMP, potable-water approved) and the Nitoseal PU polyurethane grades serve building, sanitary and weatherproofing duties that PE290 is not intended for. Among competitor systems, contractors will commonly weigh Sika’s Sikaflex pavement and PU sealant range, MBS/Master Builders Solutions MasterSeal joint sealants, and STP (Shalimar Tar Products / STP Ltd) sealing systems for similar pavement and floor-joint applications in India. The right selection depends on joint orientation, movement demand, chemical exposure and cure-speed requirements. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator serving Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering can help specifiers confirm whether PE290 or an alternative Fosroc grade best fits a given joint design.
