STP ShaliSeal RS TC
Polymer-modified, UV-resistant waterproof sealer coat that keeps water out of asphalt and concrete pavements and pushes potholes years down the road.
What is it?
A black, polymer-modified, coal-tar-based sealer coat from STP that waterproofs asphalt and concrete road surfaces and seals fine surface cracks up to 1 mm.
Where is it used?
Highways, city roads, expressway shoulders, industrial yards, parking decks and toll plazas — on both flexible (bituminous) and rigid (concrete) pavements.
Why use it?
It blocks water ingress that triggers ravelling and potholes, so a re-coat roughly every three years defers costly relaying and roughly halves maintenance spend over a 15-year horizon.
How is it applied?
Spray, roller or mechanical squeegee in one or two thin top coats onto a clean, dry surface — typically 30 days after a new pavement is laid, or any time on older roads.
About STP ShaliSeal RS TC
STP ShaliSeal RS TC is a preventive-maintenance sealer built for one job: keeping water out of the road. It is a polymer-modified, coal-tar-based liquid coating that dries to a tough, flexible black film over both bituminous and concrete surfaces. Water is what quietly destroys a pavement — it works into hairline cracks, strips the binder from the aggregate, and freezes and expands until the surface ravels into potholes. By laying down a continuous waterproof skin and bridging fine cracks up to about 1 mm, ShaliSeal RS TC interrupts that cycle before it starts, which is why STP positions a coat every three years as the key to a pothole-free road.
For engineers and highway authorities in India, the appeal is economic as much as technical. Because the sealer extends service life and defers full relaying, STP puts the maintenance saving at roughly half over a 15-year period, while conserving stone and aggregate that would otherwise be consumed in resurfacing. STP (formerly Shalimar Tar Products, now part of the Berger group) has manufactured bitumen and coal-tar road products in India for over eight decades, and ShaliSeal sits in that road-surfacing lineage. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies it Pan-India, with in-house crews across Delhi NCR for spray and squeegee application on live carriageways.
The technical insight
Road failure is almost always a water story. Once moisture penetrates the surface course, it de-bonds the bitumen film from the aggregate (stripping), softens the base, and under traffic loading that weakened patch spalls into a pothole. ShaliSeal RS TC attacks the entry point rather than the symptom. The coal-tar concentrate gives the film its dense, low-permeability, fuel- and weather-resistant character, while the polymer modification adds the flexibility the base coal tar lacks — so the coat moves with a pavement that expands, contracts and deflects under load instead of going brittle and crazing. Applied as a thin sealing skin, it wets into surface voids and closes fine cracks up to roughly 1 mm, denying water the capillary path it needs. The formulation is also UV-stabilised, which matters because untreated coal-tar films chalk and degrade under the Indian sun; the UV resistance keeps the seal intact through summer exposure so the waterproofing does not fail long before the next scheduled re-coat. The recommended 30-day wait after laying a new surface simply lets the fresh pavement cure and off-gas so the sealer bonds to a stable substrate.
Where it is used
- Preventive waterproof sealing of new highway and city-road surfaces, applied about 30 days after laying
- Rejuvenation and re-sealing of ageing bituminous roads showing early ravelling or fine cracking
- Surface protection of concrete (rigid) pavements against water ingress
- Industrial yards, loading bays and heavy-vehicle hardstandings
- Parking areas, toll plazas and fuel-station forecourts exposed to spillage and standing water
- Sealing over freshly repaired patches to blend and protect the repair
- Periodic three-year re-coating cycles within a planned road-preservation programme
- Airfield aprons, service roads and campus roads needing a durable, low-maintenance seal
Key advantages
- Genuine two-substrate versatility — one product seals both flexible bituminous and rigid concrete pavements
- Bridges and seals fine surface cracks up to around 1 mm, closing the main water-entry path
- UV-resistant film that holds up under sustained Indian sun instead of chalking away
- Polymer modification keeps the coat flexible so it moves with the pavement rather than crazing
- Strong maintenance economics — roughly halves upkeep cost over 15 years by deferring relaying
- Fast, low-disruption application by spray, roller or squeegee with minimal inconvenience to road users
- Conserves aggregate and stone by reducing the frequency of full resurfacing
- Backed by STP’s 80-plus years of coal-tar and road-surfacing manufacturing
Limitations & considerations
- A thin sealer, not a structural fix — it will not repair potholes, rutting or cracks wider than about 1 mm, which must be pre-repaired first
- Coal-tar-based and black only; not a decorative or coloured finish, and coal-tar coatings face tightening environmental scrutiny in some jurisdictions
- Needs a clean, dry, cured substrate — best applied about 30 days after new laying, not on green or damp surfaces
- Weather-window dependent: avoid application if rain is expected or in very cold/hot ambient conditions during cure
- Requires appropriate PPE during handling and spraying to avoid skin, eye and inhalation exposure
- Delivers a maintenance benefit only when re-coated on a planned cycle (roughly every three years); a single coat is not permanent
Selection & best practice
Preparation decides the result. The surface must be clean, dry and free of dust, oil, loose material and standing water; power-broom or blow the road and let any washed areas dry fully before sealing. Pre-treat anything beyond the product’s remit — cracks wider than about 1 mm, potholes and depressions should be repaired and allowed to set first, because ShaliSeal RS TC only seals fine cracks, it does not fill structural defects. On new pavements, wait roughly 30 days after laying so the surface has cured. Apply thin, even coats by spray, roller or mechanical squeegee; STP allows one or two top coats depending on how porous and textured the surface is, so a coarse or aged road will usually want the second pass. Do not flood it on — thin and uniform beats thick and patchy. Time the work to a dry weather window with no rain forecast during cure, and keep traffic off until the film has set. Crews should wear gloves, eye protection and, when spraying, respiratory protection. Plan the job as part of a preservation cycle, re-coating about every three years to keep the waterproofing continuous.

National & State Highways
Applied as a preventive waterproof seal on new and ageing carriageways to defer relaying, keeping high-traffic routes pothole-free between major overlays.
Urban Roads & Municipal Works
Re-seals city roads on a three-year cycle to control monsoon-driven ravelling and potholing, cutting the recurring civic cost of patch repairs.
Industrial Estates & Logistics

How we position STP ShaliSeal RS TC
Choose ShaliSeal RS TC when the goal is preventive waterproofing of an intact road surface — sealing the pavement and closing fine cracks before water damage sets in. When the road has already failed with wider cracks or open joints, step up to its sibling STP ShaliMastic RS TC, the three-component coal-tar crack repair-cum-sealer that carries ASTM D5727, R-P-355e and ASTM D490 compliance and handles the repair work ShaliSeal is not designed for; the two are complementary — repair with ShaliMastic, then maintain with ShaliSeal. For expansion and construction joints in the same pavements, pair with STP’s polyurethane and polysulphide joint sealants. Where the substrate is a concrete deck or structure needing membrane-grade waterproofing rather than a road seal, our Fosroc and Dr. Fixit waterproofing systems are the better route. STP does not have a like-for-like polymer-modified coal-tar road sealer beyond this ShaliSeal/ShaliMastic pairing, and no equivalent Fosroc coal-tar pavement sealer exists, so for this specific application ShaliSeal RS TC is the direct specification.
