What is it?

STP ShaliSeal CSS WB is a 2K, water-based, thermoplastic, polymer-modified coloured slurry seal that forms a flexible, skid-resistant film over both flexible (asphalt) and rigid (concrete) pavements.

Where is it used?

Parking bays, bus lanes, cycle tracks, walkways, tunnel roads, highway signalling zones, and sports or stadium surfaces where a coloured, anti-skid demarcation is required.

Why use it?

It is solvent-free and low-VOC, delivers good friction with UV and chemical resistance, and cures fast enough to reopen a lane to traffic within hours of the final coat.

How is it applied?

Mix Component A and B with a slow-speed drill, then apply two coats at 0.75 kg/m2 each by brush, roller or airless spray to reach a 750-micron dry film.

About STP ShaliSeal CSS WB

STP ShaliSeal CSS WB belongs to the coloured-surfacing family that pavement engineers reach for when a stretch of road needs both a visual identity and a working grip level — a bus lane that must read blue from a distance, a cycle track set apart in green, or a parking bay marked by colour rather than paint that wears off in a season. It ships as a factory pre-weighed two-component kit (a coloured viscous Component A and a hardener Component B) so the site team is not left guessing at ratios; the two parts are blended on site and laid cold, which removes the bitumen kettles and burner safety concerns that come with hot-applied road products.

What separates this grade from conventional acrylate road paints is the chemistry and the film it builds. It is water-based and solvent-free, so odour and VOC emissions stay low enough to work near occupied buildings, tunnels and public areas. The polymer modification gives the cured slurry genuine flexibility over a bituminous base that moves under load and temperature, while the thermoplastic binder holds colour and friction through UV exposure and repeated tyre contact. Built up in two coats to a 750-micron dry film, it behaves as a wearing, decorative and protective layer in one system rather than a thin cosmetic wash.

The technical insight

The performance comes from marrying a polymer-modified thermoplastic binder with a water-carrier delivery system. Because the binder is thermoplastic and cold-applied, the two components cure by water evaporation and coalescence rather than by heating, so the film knits into a continuous, flexible sheet without the brittleness of a hot-laid thermoset. That flexibility matters on asphalt: the base course expands, contracts and deflects under axle loads, and a rigid coating would craze and delaminate — the polymer network here stretches with the substrate instead. The 60% minimum binder content and 6000–9000 cP viscosity are what let it lay down at a full 0.75 kg/m2 per coat and hold film build on a slope without sagging, so two passes reliably reach the 750-micron target that carries the skid resistance and colour. The solvent-free, water-based formulation is not just an environmental checkbox — keeping solvents out avoids softening the bitumen it sits on and lets the coating bond cleanly to both concrete and asphalt, which is why one product covers rigid and flexible pavements alike.

Where it is used

  • Coloured demarcation of bus lanes and dedicated cycle tracks
  • Anti-skid surfacing for parking bays and access driveways
  • Pedestrian walkways, pathways and landscaped hardstanding
  • Highway junction and road-signalling colour zones
  • Tunnel road surfacing where low odour and low VOC are essential
  • Sports venue run-ups and stadium track surfaces
  • Aesthetic colour treatment of plazas and public realm paving
  • Refresh coating over sound existing asphalt or concrete pavements

Key advantages

  • Solvent-free, low-VOC green product suitable for occupied and enclosed areas
  • Cold-poured and ready to use — no heating, kettles or burners on site
  • Good friction and skid resistance for wet-weather safety
  • Flexible and durable film that moves with a bituminous base
  • Excellent UV and ageing resistance keeps colour and grip stable
  • Resists salt water, crude oil, acids and alkalis in service
  • Compatible with both concrete and bituminous pavements
  • Fast reopening — traffic within roughly 6 hours of application

Limitations & considerations

  • Requires ambient temperature of at least 10 degrees C during application
  • Cannot be laid over standing water or damp, wet areas
  • New concrete must be allowed to cure at least 28 days before coating
  • Cracks and deteriorated substrate must first be repaired (e.g. with ShaliPatch EC)
  • Two-coat build to 750 micron means longer programme than a single-coat paint
  • Coverage is theoretical and varies with surface texture and porosity

Selection & best practice

Start by removing all loose gravel, dirt, oil and grease with a jet of dry air and confirm the surface is structurally sound, dry and free of standing water. Repair cracks and worn patches with ShaliPatch EC and let new concrete reach at least 28 days before coating. Stir each component for uniformity, then mix Component A and B with a high-speed drill mixer at 300–400 RPM using a spiral blade until homogeneous. Mask out the area, apply the first coat at 0.75 kg/m2 by brush, roller or airless spray, and remove the masking tape immediately after application. Allow the first coat about 3 hours to dry (weather dependent), then apply the second coat at 0.75 kg/m2 to reach the full 750-micron dry film. Hold a final curing time of around 4 hours before allowing traffic. Airless spray gives the fastest, smoothest finish on larger areas.

Frequently asked questions

How much ShaliSeal CSS WB do I need per square metre?
Plan on roughly 1.50 kg/m2 in total — two coats at 0.75 kg/m2 each — to build the specified 750-micron dry film. This is a theoretical figure, so add an allowance for porous or heavily textured surfaces that drink more material.
Does it need heating or hot mixing like conventional road treatments?
No. It is a cold-applied, two-component system. You simply stir and blend Component A and B on site and apply — there are no kettles, burners or hot-work permits involved.
Can it go over both concrete and asphalt?
Yes. It is compatible with both rigid concrete and flexible bituminous pavements, provided the surface is sound, clean, dry and, for new concrete, at least 28 days old.
How soon can we reopen the road to traffic?
Each coat dries in about 3 hours depending on weather, and you should allow a final curing time of around 4 hours after the second coat — traffic is typically permitted about 6 hours from application.
What surface preparation is required first?
Remove all loose gravel, dirt, oil and grease with dry air, confirm the substrate is structurally sound and free of standing water, keep ambient temperature above 10 degrees C, and fill any cracks or damaged areas with ShaliPatch EC before coating.
How is it supplied and how long does it store?
It comes as a factory pre-weighed 30 kg kit — 20 kg of Component A and 10 kg of Component B — in a choice of colours. Stored sealed at 10–35 degrees C, shelf life is 12 months in the original unopened packs.

How we position STP ShaliSeal CSS WB

Within STP’s road-surfacing range, ShaliSeal CSS WB is the water-based, low-VOC choice for coloured, skid-resistant demarcation — pair it with ShaliPatch EC for crack and pothole repair as part of the same preparation stage. Where projects call for hot-applied road marking or thermoplastic line-marking rather than full-area colour surfacing, STP’s marking and colouring line covers those needs. For interior industrial floors where a coloured wearing surface is required indoors rather than on carriageways, our epoxy and PU flooring systems from Fosroc (Nitoflor) and BASF Master Builders Solutions are the more appropriate route. Space Arc supplies and applies across all of these brands, so the same team can specify the right product for pavement, car-park deck or factory floor.
