What is it?

A single-component, polymer-modified, cement-based tile adhesive from UltraTech’s Building Products Division, supplied as a grey powder that site crews gauge with water before troweling.

Where is it used?

Interior and exterior wall tiling in homes, offices, hospitals, retail fit-outs and hospitality projects, plus tile-on-tile, tile-on-mosaic and tile-over-old-cement-floor renovation work across Delhi NCR and pan-India sites.

Why use it?

It is certified to IS 15477 Type 2 and EN 12004 C1, needs no tile pre-soaking or post-curing, records zero slip in vertical slump testing, and gives applicators a genuine 30-minute open time so tiling doesn’t turn into a race against skinning.

How is it applied?

Gauge with water at a 4:1 ratio (25% by weight), mechanically stir for 2-3 minutes, let the mix stand 2 minutes, remix, then comb it onto a primed, dust-free substrate with a notched trowel to a minimum 3 mm bed and press tiles in within 30 minutes.

About UltraTech Tilefixo VT

Site-mixed cement-sand mortar has always been the default way to stick a tile to a wall, and it comes with familiar headaches: shrinkage cracks, patchy bond, and tiles that slide down before the mortar grabs. UltraTech Tilefixo VT is the factory-formulated answer — a single-component, polymer-modified cement powder that only needs water on site. The polymer gives it flexibility and adhesion plain mortar can’t match, which is why it carries a formal IS 15477 Type 2 and EN 12004 C1 rating rather than a generic ’tile adhesive’ label. It’s built around wall tiling — ceramic and vitrified tiles on masonry, plaster or concrete — and the same formulation is cleared for tile-on-tile and tile-on-old-cement-floor overlay work, useful where ripping out the old surface isn’t an option. Space Arc supplies it in 20 kg and 25 kg bags; at the rated coverage of roughly 4 sq ft per kg at 3 mm, a 20 kg bag stretches to about 80 sq ft (7.4 sq m).

The technical insight

The Type 2 / C1 rating isn’t a marketing flourish — it’s a specific pull-off adhesion threshold. Under IS 15477, Tilefixo VT is tested to 1000 N dry and 850 N wet tensile adhesion at 28 days, comfortably above the 750 N / 450 N minimums for that class; under EN 12004 (test method EN 1348), it reports 1.0 MPa dry and 0.7 MPa wet against a 0.5 MPa floor. That’s a clear step above ordinary Type 1 mortars, but still below the C2 grades reserved for large-format porcelain or natural stone. The zero-millimetre slip-resistance reading (20 kg/sq m load) is the other number worth knowing: it confirms a tile pressed onto a vertical wall stays put instead of creeping down before the adhesive sets — the main reason this product is marketed as a wall adhesive first.

Where it is used

  • Ceramic and vitrified wall tiling in bathrooms, kitchens and building facades
  • Tile-on-tile overlay directly over sound existing ceramic or mosaic
  • Tile-on-old-cement-floor renovation without demolition
  • Wall cladding in lobbies, corridors and retail fit-outs
  • Internal and external thin-bed fixing on plaster, block work and concrete
  • Bonding of insulation and decorative wall panels in commercial interiors

Key advantages

  • Single-component powder — only water is added on site, cutting batching errors
  • Zero measured slip keeps wall tiles from sliding down before the bond sets
  • 30-minute open time gives a realistic working window without rushing tile placement
  • No tile pre-soaking or post-curing step, saving labour and schedule time
  • Verified IS 15477 Type 2 and EN 12004 C1 adhesion rating, not a generic claim
  • Supplied in 20 kg and 25 kg bags to match different job-site quantities

Limitations & considerations

  • Not suitable for flexible substrates such as fibre-cement sheeting, plasterboard or timber
  • Cannot be applied directly onto metal, plastic or glass surfaces
  • Not for direct application onto polyurethane waterproofing membranes
  • Not intended for moisture-sensitive natural stone or timber-backed tiles
  • One-hour pot life demands disciplined batch sizing — a stiffening mix cannot be revived with extra water

Selection & best practice

Batch only what a crew can lay inside the 30-minute open time — mixing a full bag when half will get troweled before it skins is the most common cause of weak bond on site. On uneven or absorptive block work, prime and level with UltraTech Basekrete first rather than fixing undulations with a thicker bed. Measure the water rather than judging by eye, and never loosen a stiffening mix with extra water. Press and lightly beat in every tile within the open-time window, keep the bed at a true 3 mm minimum, and for tile-on-tile work, deglaze the existing surface first. Hold off grouting and foot traffic for the full 24 hours, longer below 20°C.

Industry use cases

Residential

Bathroom, kitchen and balcony wall tiling in Delhi NCR apartments and villas, where the 30-minute open time suits a typical two-person tiling crew.

Commercial / Retail

Wall cladding in retail counters, office pantries and hotel lobbies, where dependable bond strength avoids call-backs after fit-out handover.

Institutional / Hospitality

Hospital and hotel washroom wall tiling, where zero slip keeps large tile courses aligned while the adhesive sets.

Renovation

Tile-on-tile overlay jobs where old ceramic or mosaic is degreased/degloosed and retiled directly, avoiding the cost and debris of demolition.

Frequently asked questions

Is UltraTech Tilefixo VT suitable for floor tiling?
Tilefixo VT is formulated and rated primarily as a wall tile adhesive; it’s also listed for tile-on-tile and tile-on-old-cement-floor overlay work, but for fresh large-area floor installations a floor-rated Tilefixo grade is the safer specification.
Can it be used for large-format or natural stone tiles?
Its C1 rating handles standard ceramic and vitrified wall tiles comfortably, but large-format porcelain slabs and natural stone usually call for a higher C2 or deformable S1-grade adhesive built for the extra weight and movement.
How much water does a 20 kg bag need?
About 5 litres, since the mix ratio is 25% water by weight — four parts powder to one part water. Measure it rather than judging by eye, and don’t top up once the mix begins to stiffen.
How soon can tiled walls be grouted or used?
Allow a minimum of 24 hours after tiling before grouting or putting the wall into use; below 20°C, give the adhesive extra time to cure fully.
What’s the difference between open time and pot life?
Pot life (1 hour) is how long the mixed adhesive stays workable in the tray; open time (30 minutes) is the shorter window after troweling within which tiles must be pressed in for a reliable bond.

How we position UltraTech Tilefixo VT

Within UltraTech’s own Tilefixo range — all stocked by Space Arc — VT sits in the middle. CT and NT cover lighter-duty, Type 1-style fixing; Rapid trades open time for a faster set; X’TRAPLUS steps up to a C2 rating for large-format and heavy tiles; and YT is the natural-stone-safe white option. Tilefixo VT is the one to reach for on everyday ceramic and vitrified wall tiling and tile-on-tile refurbishment, where a genuine C1 rating matters more than large-format capability — and it’s worth stepping up to X’TRAPLUS once tile size or material exceeds what a C1 adhesive is rated for.
