What is it?

A factory-laminated composite sheet: a Sarnafil G PVC membrane bonded onto DX51D Z275 galvanised steel, so one face is rigid metal and the other is fully weldable to the roof membrane.

Where is it used?

At the edges and details of Sarnafil single-ply PVC roofs, commercial and industrial roofing, warehouses, gutter linings, parapets and rainwater outlets.

Why use it?

It removes the weak point where membrane meets metal, letting fabricated trims and profiles be welded into the field sheet instead of sealed with mastic that ages and fails.

How is it applied?

Cut and folded to profile on site or in a workshop, mechanically fixed, then the PVC face is hot-air welded to the surrounding Sarnafil membrane.

About Sika Sarnafil Metal PVC

Every single-ply PVC roof lives or dies at its edges. The field membrane can be flawless, but water finds the roof through the perimeter trims, the gutter joints, the parapet cappings and the pipe penetrations where the flat sheet has to meet rigid metal. Sarnafil Metal PVC is Sika’s answer to that junction. It is a coil or sheet of galvanised steel that comes from the factory already laminated with a layer of Sarnafil G PVC membrane, so the fabricator ends up with a metal profile whose top surface is chemically the same material as the roof itself. Instead of relying on sealant or clamped joints to bridge membrane and metal, the installer simply hot-air welds the two together into one continuous, homogeneous skin.

For a distributor audience in Delhi NCR and across India, the appeal is practical. The steel core (DX51D Z275, with an epoxy coating on the cut face) gives the trim its shape and rigidity; the 1.20 mm PVC lamination gives it a weldable, UV-stable surface that matches the membrane’s service life rather than out-living or under-performing it. The sheets and coils can be brake-folded to any drip edge, capping or upstand profile a detail demands, which means one product covers a wide range of roof terminations without carrying a shelf of pre-formed accessories. Because it is a Sarnafil-system component, it is intended to be specified alongside Sarnafil G 410 or S 327 membranes rather than mixed into unrelated roofing build-ups.

The technical insight

The reason this product works comes down to a single principle: weld like to like. A hot-air weld fuses two thermoplastic PVC surfaces into one mass, and that fused seam is as strong and as watertight as the parent material. A sealant joint, by contrast, is only ever as durable as the adhesion and elasticity of the sealant, both of which degrade under UV and thermal cycling. By laminating genuine Sarnafil G PVC (reinforced with a glass non-woven inlay for dimensional stability) directly onto the steel, Sika converts the traditional membrane-to-metal transition into a membrane-to-membrane weld. The galvanised steel underneath handles the mechanical job — holding the folded profile, resisting corrosion, carrying fixings — while the PVC handles the waterproofing continuity. The 3-times-thickness bending radius rule exists to protect that lamination: bend too sharply and you crack or delaminate the PVC skin at the very point where the weld needs to be sound. The specified 3-5 mm gap at butt ends allows for thermal movement of the metal, with the membrane weld carried across the joint doing the sealing.

Where it is used

  • Roof edge trims and drip profiles on commercial single-ply PVC roofs
  • Perimeter fastening details on industrial and warehouse roofing
  • Gutter linings and rainwater outlet junctions
  • Parapet cappings and upstand terminations
  • Custom-fabricated roof junctions and corner details
  • Kerbs, coping details and skirting profiles welded into the field membrane
  • Fascia and verge trims on exposed roof edges

Key advantages

  • PVC face welds directly into Sarnafil membranes, replacing sealant joints with a homogeneous, watertight seam
  • Galvanised DX51D Z275 steel core with epoxy-protected cut edge resists corrosion
  • Can be cut, brake-folded and profiled on site or in a metal workshop, so one product serves many detail shapes
  • UV-resistant PVC surface matched to the membrane’s exposure life
  • Available in six coordinated colours to match or contrast the roof finish
  • Supplied as sheets or 30 m coils, suiting both small trims and long continuous runs
  • Fully integrated into the Sarnafil G/S single-ply system rather than a generic bolt-on accessory

Limitations & considerations

  • The PVC lamination is not resistant to tar, bitumen, oil or solvent-containing materials and must be kept away from them
  • It is a system detailing component, not a standalone waterproofing membrane; it must be welded into a Sarnafil roof to perform
  • Installation is restricted to Sika-trained and approved contractors experienced in single-ply welding
  • Service is limited to locations with average monthly minimums around -30 degC and permanent ambient use up to +50 degC
  • Over-tight folds (below the 3x thickness bending radius) or excessive edge pressure can crack or delaminate the PVC skin
  • Some ancillary adhesives, cleaners and solvents cannot be used below +5 degC, which affects cold-weather installation

Selection & best practice

Fold the sheet or coil to profile keeping the bending radius at a minimum of three times the flashing thickness, and avoid excessive edge pressure that could damage the lamination. Fix at the minimum fixing distances required by the local roof design, and leave a 3 to 5 mm gap at butt ends to accommodate thermal movement, carrying the membrane weld across the joint. Ensure the PVC face is clean and dry, then hot-air weld it to the surrounding Sarnafil membrane at the correct temperature and speed for a homogeneous seam. Store pallets flat, in dry conditions between +5 and +30 degC, never stacked on one another or under other materials, and keep the product clear of bitumen, oils and solvents at all times. Prime and detail using the matched system products, and let only Sika-trained applicators execute the work.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sarnafil Metal PVC a waterproofing membrane on its own?
No. It is a detailing component for the Sarnafil single-ply system. It provides a rigid, weldable metal edge or profile that is hot-air welded into a Sarnafil G or S membrane roof; on its own it does not waterproof an area.
Which Sarnafil membranes does it weld to?
It is designed to weld into Sarnafil G/S PVC systems, typically specified with Sarnafil G 410 or Sarnafil S 327 membranes. It is not compatible with bituminous or non-PVC roofing systems.
What thickness and weight should I expect?
Total thickness is 1.80 mm, made up of a 1.20 mm Sarnafil G PVC lamination over 0.60 mm galvanised steel. It weighs about 6.20 kg/m2 (+/-8%), so a 3 m sheet is roughly 18.60 kg and a 30 m coil about 186 kg.
Can it be shaped on site?
Yes. It can be cut and brake-folded on site or in a metal workshop to form drip edges, cappings and custom profiles. Keep the bending radius at least three times the flashing thickness to protect the PVC lamination.
What surfaces or materials will damage it?
The PVC face is not resistant to tar, bitumen, oil or solvent-containing materials. Keep it clear of these during storage and installation, as contact can degrade the lamination and compromise the weld.
Who is allowed to install it, and what colours are available?
Installation must be carried out by Sika-trained and approved single-ply contractors. It comes in light grey, window grey, lead grey, copper patina, copper brown and traffic white to coordinate with the roof finish.

How we position Sika Sarnafil Metal PVC

Sarnafil Metal PVC is a detailing piece within Sika’s Sarnafil single-ply family, so it is best sold as part of a system rather than in isolation. Pair it with the field membrane it welds into, Sarnafil G 410 or Sarnafil S 327, and with the matched ancillaries the roof design calls for, namely Sarnaplast-2235, Primer-110 and Sika S-Sealing Tape. Where a project needs bonded rather than mechanically fixed details, Sika’s Sarnacol adhesives complete the specification. Because this is a genuinely PVC single-ply component, there is no honest Fosroc equivalent; contractors working in a Fosroc-based waterproofing scope would typically be on a different system entirely (cementitious or liquid-applied), so a cross-sell there would be misleading. For clients weighing single-ply against other approaches, we can also position Sika’s membrane roofing against liquid-applied polyurethane or APP/SBS torch systems from our other brand lines, and advise honestly on which suits the roof, the budget and the maintenance appetite.
