What is it?

A cold-applied, fast-drying acrylic road marking paint from STP Limited (formerly ShaliMark WB LB), carried in water rather than solvent and supplied in White, Golden Yellow, Lane Red and Black.

Where is it used?

Lane lines, zebra crossings, path dividers, speed breakers, parking bays and kerb marking on bituminous and concrete surfaces — including runway, taxiway and apron markings.

Why use it?

It dries fast enough to reopen lanes within the hour, carries less than 30 g/L VOC, needs no heating plant, and tools clean up with plain water — cutting both downtime and disposal cost.

How is it applied?

Airless spray at 1800–2200 psi (10–23 thou orifice) for line work, or brush and roller for small areas, over a clean, dry, fully cured substrate at 10–40 °C.

About STP ShaliMark WB 40

ShaliMark WB 40 is STP Limited’s standard-grade waterborne line marking paint, built on an acrylic emulsion instead of the solvent-borne chlorinated rubber chemistry that older marking paints relied on. Because the carrier is water, the wet paint releases almost no solvent vapour — VOC is held below 30 g/L — which matters on enclosed jobs like basement car parks and toll plazas where ventilation is limited. The paint bonds directly to both bituminous and concrete surfaces, so one material covers a mixed carriageway without switching systems, and the product was earlier sold as ShaliMark WB LB if you are matching an old specification.

For contractors, the practical appeal is speed and simplicity. There is no preheater, boiler or melting kettle as with thermoplastic; material is stirred, loaded into an airless pump and sprayed cold. At 27 °C a fresh line is surface-dry in roughly 20 minutes and hard-dry in about 50, so short lane closures are realistic even on live urban roads. Drop-on glass beads can be ordered in a separate pack when night-time retroreflectivity is specified.

The technical insight

Waterborne acrylics cure by coalescence, not solvent flash-off. As water leaves the applied film, the dispersed acrylic polymer particles are forced into contact and fuse into a continuous, tough membrane 30–40 microns thick (un-beaded). Two consequences follow. First, film formation depends on evaporation, so the TDS conditions are not fine print: substrate between 10 and 40 °C and relative humidity below 80 percent. In monsoon humidity or a cold winter morning, water leaves the film slowly and drying times stretch well beyond the quoted 20/50 minutes. Second, once coalesced, the acrylic film is no longer water-sensitive — rain after hard-dry does not re-emulsify it. With 35 ± 2 percent volume solids, a litre spreads over a theoretical 10–13 m², and the smooth matt finish accepts drop-on glass beads while the film is still wet, locking them in as it coalesces for retroreflective performance.

Where it is used

  • Lane lines, edge lines and centre lines on municipal and urban roads
  • Zebra crossings, stop lines and directional arrows
  • Path divider, median and speed-breaker marking
  • Parking bay and circulation marking in open lots and basement car parks
  • Runway, taxiway and apron markings on airside pavements
  • Internal roads in factories, warehouses and logistics parks
  • Kerb and hazard marking using Lane Red and Black shades
  • Refreshing or repainting existing water-based road markings

Key advantages

  • Water-based with VOC under 30 g/L — safe for enclosed and poorly ventilated areas
  • Surface-dry in about 20 minutes at 27 °C, so lanes reopen quickly
  • Cold applied — no boiler, preheater or melting equipment on site
  • Bonds to both bituminous and concrete pavements with the same material
  • Four factory shades: White, Golden Yellow, Lane Red and Black
  • Tools and overspray clean up with plain water, reducing disposal cost
  • Easy overcoating makes routine repainting cycles straightforward
  • Theoretical coverage of 10–13 m²/L keeps per-metre line cost low

Limitations & considerations

  • Not recommended for national highways or heavy, high-speed traffic — thermoplastic marking or the higher-solids ShaliMark WB 60 holds up better there
  • Drying slows significantly above 80% relative humidity or at low temperatures; the substrate must be between 10 and 40 °C
  • Cannot be applied over damp surfaces or standing water, and new concrete must be at least 28 days old
  • The un-beaded film is only 30–40 microns thick, so wear life is inherently shorter than 2–3 mm thermoplastic lines
  • Night-time retroreflectivity requires drop-on glass beads (ordered separately) — the paint alone gives limited night visibility

Selection & best practice

Surface preparation decides how long the line lasts. Blow the pavement clean of loose gravel, dust, oil and grease with dry compressed air, and confirm the surface is cured, sound and completely dry — no standing water anywhere in the work zone. Remove any pre-existing line before repainting, and on new concrete wait a full 28 days for cure. Check that the substrate sits between 10 and 40 °C with humidity under 80 percent; skipping this check is the most common cause of slow-drying, tracking complaints. Stir the paint thoroughly for uniformity, then set out reference lines with nylon rope and chalk. Spray with an airless unit at 1800–2200 psi nozzle pressure using a 10–23 thou orifice, keeping passes uniform and streak-free; brush or roller work is fine for bays and small repairs. If beads are specified, drop them onto the wet film immediately after spraying. Store unopened 20 L packs airtight, under shed and away from heat — shelf life is 12 months.

Industry use cases

Municipal & Urban Roads

Lane lines, zebra crossings and speed-breaker marking on city streets where short closures matter — surface-dry in around 20 minutes lets crews reopen lanes within the hour.

Airports & Airside Pavements

Runway, taxiway and apron markings on concrete and bituminous airside surfaces, with glass beads added where retroreflectivity is specified.

Industrial Plants & Logistics Parks

Internal road networks, pedestrian walkways and truck circulation marking across factory campuses, with Lane Red and Black available for hazard zones.

Real Estate & Parking Structures

Bay marking and directional arrows in basement and multi-level car parks, where sub-30 g/L VOC avoids fume build-up in poorly ventilated levels.

Institutional Campuses

Roadways, crossings and parking demarcation in hospitals, universities and IT parks where low-odour, water-cleanup application suits occupied premises.

Frequently asked questions

How much area does a 20 L pack of ShaliMark WB 40 cover?
Theoretical coverage is 10–13 m² per litre, so a 20 L pack covers roughly 200–260 m² of line area. Practical yield is lower on rough or porous pavements — open-graded bitumen absorbs more paint than dense concrete, so budget from a site trial.
How soon can traffic run over freshly painted lines?
At 27 °C the film is surface-dry in about 20 minutes and hard-dry in about 50, after which normal traffic is acceptable. In high humidity (above 80%) or cold weather, water leaves the film slowly and you should extend the closure accordingly.
Can I apply it on newly laid concrete or asphalt?
New concrete must be at least 28 days old and fully cured before marking. On any substrate, the surface has to be clean, dry and sound, with substrate temperature between 10 and 40 °C — never apply over damp patches or standing water.
What is the difference between ShaliMark WB 40 and WB 60?
WB 40 is the standard grade for low-to-medium traffic — city roads, car parks, campuses. WB 60 carries higher solids, builds a thicker and longer-wearing film, and is the better pick for heavier traffic. For national highways, thermoplastic marking is the usual specification.
Does ShaliMark WB 40 give night-time reflectivity?
Only with glass beads. STP supplies the required beads in a separate pack on request; they are dropped onto the wet film immediately after spraying and lock in as the paint coalesces, giving the retroreflectivity that headlights pick up.
What equipment do I need to apply it?
For line work, an airless spray unit running 1800–2200 psi nozzle pressure with a 10–23 thou orifice tip. No heating plant is needed since it is cold applied, and brush or roller application works for parking bays, kerbs and touch-ups. Equipment cleans up with water.

How we position STP ShaliMark WB 40

ShaliMark WB 40 is the entry point in STP’s road marking family: choose it for municipal roads, car parks and campus networks where traffic is light to moderate and fast reopening matters. Where traffic intensity climbs, step up within the same family to ShaliMark WB 60, whose higher solids content builds a thicker, longer-wearing film; for national highways and MORTH-specified work, STP’s ShaliMark thermoplastic road marking compound remains the standard answer. Inside factory buildings, where forklift traffic abrades thin paint films quickly, a resin-based line marking approach from our industrial flooring range — such as the Fosroc Nitoflor family — usually outlasts road paint on smooth concrete. Space Arc Engineering supplies genuine STP material with application support across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, and can help you match the grade to your traffic study rather than over- or under-specifying.
