What is it?

An integral, permeability-reducing concrete admixture from MC-Bauchemie, classified as IS 9103 Type P and available in liquid or powder form.

Where is it used?

Basements, underground car parks, water tanks, sumps, swimming pool shells and other water-retaining or below-ground concrete across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

Why use it?

It waterproofs the whole concrete cross-section rather than just a surface, lowering water penetration, chloride ingress and carbonation without hurting strength.

How is it applied?

Dosed at 0.5 to 2.0 percent by weight of cement into the mixing water at the batching plant or site mixer, then batched and placed as normal concrete.

About MC-Bauchemie MC-Crete WPA

MC-Crete WPA is MC-Bauchemie’s integral waterproofing and permeability-reducing admixture, designed for engineers who want the water resistance built into the concrete itself instead of relying only on a coating applied after the structure is up. Rather than sitting on the surface, it works throughout the mix: it reacts with the calcium hydroxide left over from cement hydration and physically blocks the fine capillary pores that would otherwise carry water through the section. The result is a denser, tighter matrix that resists the passage of water under pressure. It carries an IS 9103 Type P classification, complies with the durability intent of IS 456, and is chloride-free, so it is safe to use in reinforced and prestressed elements where chloride-induced corrosion is a genuine concern.

For a specifier, the appeal is that MC-Crete WPA addresses durability, not just a leak. Because it reduces the connected pore network, it also slows the ingress of chlorides and the rate of carbonation, both of which drive long-term deterioration of reinforced concrete in Indian conditions. It suits OPC 43 and OPC 53 mixes and performs particularly well with blended cements such as PPC and PSC, where the pozzolanic reaction and the admixture work in the same direction. Space Arc Engineering supplies and supports the product for projects across Delhi NCR, Noida, Uttar Pradesh and the wider Pan-India market, so the material comes with dosage guidance tied to your actual mix design rather than a generic figure off a bag.

The technical insight

The mechanism is a combination of chemical and physical pore-refinement. When cement hydrates, it produces calcium hydroxide, a soluble by-product that leaves gaps and weak zones in the paste. MC-Crete WPA reacts with a portion of that calcium hydroxide and, together with its pore-blocking action, densifies the capillary pore structure that normally forms the plumbing for water movement through concrete. Water does not travel through sound concrete in a straight line; it wicks along interconnected capillaries under a pressure gradient. By interrupting and narrowing those capillaries, the admixture forces water to negotiate a far more tortuous, discontinuous path, which sharply lowers the rate of penetration. In practical testing to EN 12390-8, treated concrete typically shows a penetration depth below 20 mm at 0.5 MPa over 72 hours, against 40 to 80 mm for the same mix without the admixture. Because the effect is dispersed uniformly through the batch, protection exists at every point in the cross-section rather than only where a coating happens to be intact, which is what makes it genuinely integral.

Where it is used

  • Basement rafts, retaining walls and slabs for buildings and underground car parks
  • Underground and overhead water storage tanks, sumps and reservoirs
  • Swimming pool basins and shells cast in reinforced concrete
  • Culverts, drainage channels and other water-retaining infrastructure
  • Lift pits, foundation elements and below-ground service structures
  • Marine and coastal concrete where chloride ingress must be limited
  • Blended-cement (PPC/PSC) durability mixes for aggressive exposure
  • Concrete requiring an IS 9103 Type P admixture for specification compliance

Key advantages

  • Waterproofs the full concrete cross-section, not just a treated surface
  • Chloride-free, so safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete
  • Reduces water penetration to under 10 to 20 mm against 40 to 80 mm for untreated concrete
  • Slows chloride ingress and carbonation, improving long-term durability
  • Neutral to slightly positive effect on strength when correctly dosed
  • IS 9103 Type P classified for direct use in Indian specifications
  • Works with OPC 43, OPC 53 and performs strongly with PPC and PSC
  • Compatible with surface-applied membranes as part of a belt-and-braces system

Limitations & considerations

  • It waterproofs the concrete body but does not seal construction and movement joints, which still need waterbars or joint treatment
  • It does not prevent cracking from shrinkage, thermal movement or structural causes
  • It cannot bridge or heal cracks that already exist in the concrete
  • On its own it is not sufficient for deep basements under high hydrostatic head, where an external membrane is also required
  • Performance still depends on sound mix design, adequate cover, proper compaction and curing

Selection & best practice

Fix the dosage against your mix design rather than guessing: 0.5 to 2.0 percent by weight of cement is the working range, with 1.0 to 1.5 percent a sensible starting point for basement and water-retaining structures. Add the admixture to the mixing water, not to dry cement, so it disperses evenly through the batch, and hold the water-cement ratio to design so the pore-refining benefit is not undone by excess water. Treat MC-Crete WPA as the in-body defence within a complete waterproofing scheme: detail waterbars or swellable strips at all construction joints, and where hydrostatic pressure is significant, pair it with an external membrane. Above all, control cracking through proper reinforcement detailing, and cure the concrete thoroughly, because a well-cured, low water-cement-ratio mix is what lets the admixture deliver its full permeability reduction.

Industry use cases

Commercial & residential basements

Multi-level basements and car parks where the raft and retaining walls must resist ground water; used with joint waterbars and, at depth, an external membrane.

Water & wastewater

Storage tanks, sumps, reservoirs and treatment structures that must both retain water and resist aggressive exposure over decades.

Hospitality & recreation

Swimming pool shells and water features where a dense, low-permeability concrete body reduces the load on the tiling and lining system.

Infrastructure

Culverts, drainage channels and water-retaining civil works exposed to alternating wetting, drying and pressure.

Marine & coastal

Reinforced concrete near the coast where limiting chloride ingress is central to protecting the reinforcement and extending service life.

Frequently asked questions

How much MC-Crete WPA do I add to my concrete?
The working range is 0.5 to 2.0 percent by weight of cement. For basements and water-retaining structures a dose of around 1.0 to 1.5 percent is typical, but the exact figure should be confirmed against your mix design and cement type.
Does it replace external waterproofing membranes?
Not always. For most tanks and shallow structures it can be the primary defence, but for deep basements under high hydrostatic pressure it should be combined with an external membrane. It is designed to complement surface systems, not necessarily to replace them.
Will it stop my concrete from cracking or leaking at joints?
No. MC-Crete WPA lowers the permeability of sound concrete, but it does not prevent cracking and does not seal construction or movement joints. Those still need proper reinforcement detailing and waterbars or joint treatment.
Is it safe to use in reinforced concrete?
Yes. It is chloride-free, so there is no risk of the admixture itself introducing chlorides that could corrode reinforcement, which is why it suits reinforced and prestressed elements.
Does adding it reduce the strength of my concrete?
At the correct dosage the effect on strength is neutral to slightly positive. As with any admixture, over-dosing or increasing water content to chase workability can undermine both strength and the waterproofing benefit.
Can I use it with PPC or PSC cement?
Yes. It works with OPC 43 and OPC 53 and performs particularly well with blended cements such as PPC and PSC, where the pozzolanic reaction reinforces the pore-refining action of the admixture.

How we position MC-Bauchemie MC-Crete WPA

MC-Crete WPA sits in the integral, in-body waterproofing part of a durability strategy and is strongest when detailed alongside complementary products rather than alone. At construction and movement joints, pair it with a waterbar or a swellable joint strip, and for deep or high-pressure structures back it up with an external waterproofing membrane. Where the requirement shifts from reducing permeability to actively sealing fine cracks over time, a crystalline admixture is the more appropriate MC-Bauchemie route. Across our other brands we can also offer equivalent IS 2645 liquid integral admixtures and pre-applied and post-applied membrane systems, so the full waterproofing package can be specified from a single source. For teams standardising on a particular manufacturer, a like-for-like Fosroc option is available.
