Fosroc Cebex 653
Thixotropic anti-washout powder admixture that lets cement grouts gel rapidly and resist cement loss when pumped into moving water, tunnel annuli and water-bearing ground.
What is it?
A white, free-flowing powder admixture made from a blend of water-soluble, high-molecular-weight polymers. Added to OPC cement grouts, it makes them thixotropic and anti-washout so they resist dilution and cement loss when placed in flowing water.
Where is it used?
Tunnel annulus (backfill) grouting behind segmental linings in soft ground or rock, shaft grouting, and stabilisation of cement grouts pumped into water-bearing cavities or fissures, including marine and seawater contact conditions.
Why use it?
Without a stabiliser, grout pumped into moving water washes out, loses cement and never develops strength. Cebex 653 produces near-instant gelation the moment pumping stops, giving early invert support, reduced washout and saved cement.
How is it applied?
The mixed OPC grout (w/c 0.30 to 0.45) is prepared as normal, then Cebex 653 is added as a slow stream and mixed for about 30 seconds. The highly thickened grout is placed with non-valved pumps and discharged within 2 to 5 minutes before it gels.
About Fosroc Cebex 653
Fosroc Cebex 653 is a thixotropic stabiliser supplied as a white powder, formulated from a blend of water-soluble, high-molecular-weight polymers. It is designed to be added to ordinary Portland cement (OPC) grout mixes so that they can be pumped and placed in moving-water conditions without the excessive washout of cement that normally destroys an unmodified grout. In simple terms, it converts a fluid, pumpable cement grout into a highly thixotropic material that holds together against flowing water, gels almost instantly once pumping stops, and still develops useful strength.\n\nThe product belongs to Fosroc’s Cebex range of cementitious grout admixtures and is most closely associated with civil-tunnelling and underground works. Its signature behaviour is rapid gelation: Cebex 653 does not significantly change the initial hardness or the final setting time of the cement grout, but the gel that forms within a couple of minutes of placement makes the grout appear to have reached initial set instantaneously. That early structure is what gives tunnellers early invert support and lets ring-by-ring lining progress faster.\n\nFor Indian contractors, consultants and project engineers working on metro tunnels, hydropower headrace and tailrace tunnels, water-conveyance shafts and ground-stabilisation grouting in water-bearing strata, Cebex 653 addresses a very specific and difficult problem: keeping cement where you pump it when groundwater is moving against you. It is a single-dose powder system, which keeps batching simple on site. Space Arc Engineering supplies Cebex 653 as part of the Fosroc grouting and tunnelling portfolio across Delhi NCR and pan-India, alongside the grouts and accelerators it is normally used with.”
The technical insight
Cebex 653 works through polymer thixotropy rather than chemical acceleration. The water-soluble polymers hydrate and build a three-dimensional gel network in the mix water that immobilises the cement particles. Under the shear of pumping the network breaks down and the grout flows; the instant shear stops, the network re-forms and the grout gels. This is why placement is time-critical: the mix thickens within roughly 2 to 5 minutes, so discharge must happen before that window closes. Because the gel is a physical structure and not an early set, Cebex 653 does not significantly alter either the initial hardness or the final setting time of the base grout, and grouts retain high compressive strength even when placed in moving water. The recommended base mix is an OPC grout at a tight water-cement ratio of 0.30 to 0.45 with the thixotropic admixture incorporated. Dosage is fixed and simple: one 0.27 kg bag per 300 kg of cement (about 0.09% by weight of cement), added as a slow stream and mixed for around 30 seconds in standard grout shear-mixing equipment. The thickened grout demands non-valved pumps and holding tanks with discharge ports of at least 75 mm to let the stiff grout pass. Overdosing is specifically cautioned against because it can thicken the grout beyond what the pumps can handle.”
Where it is used
- Tunnel annulus (backfill) grouting behind precast segmental linings in soft ground or rock
- Stabilisation of cement grouts pumped into cavities or fissures subject to water flow
- Shaft grouting in water-bearing ground
- Ground-stabilisation and consolidation grouting where groundwater is moving against the grout
- Underwater and marine grouting in contact with seawater
- Metro, hydropower and water-conveyance tunnelling where early invert support and ring productivity matter
Key advantages
- Enables ordinary cement grouts to be placed in moving-water conditions that would otherwise wash the grout out
- Reduced washout means less cement is lost, lowering material cost and waste
- Near-instant gelation when pumping stops gives early invert support and increased productivity in tunnel ring lining
- Suitable for marine environments and contact with seawater
- Single fixed-dose powder (0.27 kg per 300 kg cement) keeps site batching simple and repeatable
- Does not significantly alter the base grout’s initial hardness or final setting time, so structural performance is preserved
- Grouts retain high compressive strength even when placed in flowing water
- Works with standard grout shear-mixing equipment, so no specialist mixing plant is required
Limitations & considerations
- Time-critical placement: the grout thickens within about 2 to 5 minutes, so it must be discharged before gelation
- The highly thickened grout requires non-valved pumps; valved pumps are not recommended
- Holding tanks need a discharge port of at least 75 mm to pass the thickened grout
- Overdosing must be avoided or the grout becomes too stiff to pump
- Designed for OPC grouts at a controlled w/c ratio of 0.30 to 0.45; it is not a remedy for poorly proportioned or contaminated mixes
- It is a stabiliser, not a structural grout in itself, and does not replace the cement grout’s own strength development
- Specialised tunnelling/grouting admixture, not a general-purpose construction additive; on-site grouting know-how is needed
- Must be kept dry; as a hygroscopic polymer powder it is sensitive to moisture during storage and handling
Selection & best practice
Always start from a correctly proportioned OPC grout at a water-cement ratio of 0.30 to 0.45 and mix it to a homogeneous slurry before introducing Cebex 653. Add the admixture as a slow stream into the running mixer and mix for about 30 seconds only, just enough to disperse it, then place immediately. Plan the pumping circuit so the grout is discharged within 2 to 5 minutes of dosing, before it gels; pre-position non-valved pumps and ensure holding tanks have discharge ports of at least 75 mm. Hold the dosage exactly at 0.27 kg per 300 kg of cement and never overdose to chase faster gelation, since an over-thick grout can block the pump. Trial the full mix-place-pump sequence on a small batch before production grouting, store the powder in a dry place in its original packaging, and use within the 12-month shelf life. How we position Fosroc Cebex 653
Cebex 653 occupies a specialist niche in the Fosroc grouting and tunnelling range: it is the anti-washout, rapid-gel powder you reach for when cement grout has to be placed against moving groundwater. Within the Fosroc portfolio it sits close to the Cebex family of grout admixtures (such as Cebex 100/Cebex 300 expanding grout additives and the Cebex Cable Grout products) and is typically used with OPC and Fosroc cementitious grouts; where a pre-bagged underwater grout is preferred over a site-batched admixed mix, Fosroc’s Conbextra UW (underwater) grout and Conplast underwater products are the more turnkey alternatives, and some suppliers list these as direct substitutes where Cebex 653 is no longer stocked. Against other brands available in India, comparable anti-washout and viscosity-modifying admixture technologies are offered by Sika (the Sika anti-washout admixture and ViscoCrete VMA range), MBS/MYK and similar specialist suppliers, while waterproofing-and-repair-led brands such as Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and STP (Shalimar) compete more in adjacent grouting and water-stopping products than in this exact tunnel-annulus anti-washout role. For most Indian projects the decision is between a site-dosed powder stabiliser like Cebex 653 (simple single dose, works with standard grout plant) and a pre-formulated underwater grout; Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, can advise on the right choice and supply the matching grouts, accelerators and pumping accessories. Always confirm the current regional datasheet, since formulations and stock availability vary by market.”
