Fosroc Nitoprime 33
Water-based styrene-acrylic emulsion primer that seals porous concrete and locks Fosroc Cemtop self-levelling toppings firmly to the slab.
What is it?
A single-component, water-based styrene-acrylic copolymer emulsion primer supplied as a white liquid, designed specifically to prime concrete and cementitious substrates ahead of Fosroc Cemtop self-levelling floor toppings.
Where is it used?
Industrial and commercial flooring projects across India — warehouses, factories, showrooms, hospitals and retail floors — wherever a Cemtop self-levelling underlayment or wear topping is being laid over a concrete slab.
Why use it?
It seals the substrate to stop air escaping from the concrete and pinholing the topping, wets and binds friable surface dust, boosts adhesion between slab and topping, and slows water loss so the Cemtop cures without premature drying or debonding.
How is it applied?
Diluted with water and applied in two coats by brush, roller, squeegee or spray — the first coat at 1:5 (primer:water) and the second at 1:3 — with the Cemtop laid once the primer film is touch-dry.
About Fosroc Nitoprime 33
Fosroc Nitoprime 33 is a purpose-built bonding primer that exists for one job: preparing concrete and cementitious slabs to receive Fosroc’s Cemtop range of cementitious self-levelling floor toppings. It is a single-component, water-based emulsion of styrene-acrylic copolymers, supplied as a white liquid that dries to a thin, continuous, slightly tacky film. Unlike a decorative paint, its value lies entirely in what it does to the interface between two layers of construction material. On a bare power-floated or screeded slab there are three problems waiting to spoil a self-levelling pour — surface laitance and dust that prevent a proper bond, micro-porosity that draws water out of the fresh topping too quickly, and trapped air that rises through the wet compound to form pinholes and blisters. Nitoprime 33 addresses all three. It penetrates and consolidates the dusty surface, fills and seals the pores so the substrate cannot pull water from the Cemtop, and creates a barrier that stops air being released as bubbles into the flowing topping. In Indian conditions, where slabs are frequently laid in hot, dry weather and site dust is hard to eliminate, this sealing-and-wetting action is the difference between a flat, fully-bonded floor and one that delaminates or shows a pockmarked surface within weeks. For Space Arc Engineering’s customers across Delhi NCR and Pan-India — contractors fitting out warehouses, food and pharma plants, automotive workshops and retail interiors — Nitoprime 33 is a low-cost consumable that protects a far more expensive flooring system. It is always specified and supplied as part of a Cemtop floor build-up rather than as a stand-alone product, and getting the priming right is the single most common factor separating a successful self-levelling job from a failed one.
The technical insight
The performance of Nitoprime 33 comes from styrene-acrylic emulsion chemistry. As the water phase evaporates and is partly absorbed into the slab, the dispersed polymer particles coalesce into a continuous film keyed into the concrete pore structure. Styrene contributes hardness, water resistance and a degree of alkali tolerance — important because fresh cementitious substrates are highly alkaline — while the acrylic fraction provides flexibility, adhesion and durability of the bond. The result is a film that both seals porosity and remains chemically compatible with the cement-based Cemtop laid over it, so the topping can develop a true mechanical and chemical key rather than sitting on a dusty, water-hungry surface. The staged dilution is deliberate and not optional: the very thin 1:5 first coat is engineered to soak deep into the open pores and bind loose particles, effectively a consolidating sealer; the richer 1:3 second coat then builds a more closed, film-forming layer that controls air release and water demand. On extremely porous or highly absorbent slabs a third coat at 1:3 is recommended because two coats may not fully close the surface. Coverage reflects this layering — roughly 5 m² per litre of concentrate for a two-coat application, falling to about 4 m²/litre for three coats and 3 m²/litre for four coats. Drying is fast: each coat is typically ready to overcoat in 2–4 hours at 20°C, though in Indian summer heat this shortens and in monsoon humidity it lengthens, so films must be judged by touch rather than the clock. Critically, the Cemtop must be applied while the final primer coat is still slightly tacky — if the primer is allowed to fully dry out and dust over, its bonding benefit is largely lost and the surface should be re-primed.
Where it is used
- Priming concrete and screed slabs before Fosroc Cemtop GP general-purpose self-levelling floor toppings
- Priming substrates ahead of Cemtop XD and other Cemtop wear-topping grades in industrial floors
- Sealing porous, dusty or absorbent slabs to prevent pinholing and blistering of self-levelling compounds
- Wetting and consolidating friable concrete surfaces to improve bond before a flooring underlayment
- Reducing rapid water loss from fresh self-levelling toppings in hot, dry Indian site conditions
- Preparing floors in warehouses, factories, retail units, showrooms and institutional buildings receiving a Cemtop finish
Key advantages
- Water-based and single-component — low odour, non-flammable and easy to handle on occupied or sensitive sites such as hospitals and food plants
- Seals substrate porosity to prevent air release, eliminating pinholes and blisters in the self-levelling topping
- Improves adhesion of Cemtop toppings to concrete, reducing the risk of debonding and hollow areas
- Consolidates surface dust and laitance, giving the topping a sound base to bond to
- Controls water demand of the slab so the topping cures properly without drying out prematurely
- Fast drying — typically overcoatable in 2–4 hours at 20°C, allowing same-day priming and topping
- Economical in use, with one litre of concentrate covering roughly 5 m² over two coats
- Simple staged dilution and flexible application by brush, roller, squeegee or spray
Limitations & considerations
- Not a stand-alone product — it is a primer specifically for the Fosroc Cemtop system, not a general-purpose surface coating or sealer
- Designed for concrete and cementitious substrates; it is not a primer for steel, an anti-corrosion product, or a substitute for epoxy/zinc primers like Nitoprime Zincrich
- Provides no waterproofing, chemical resistance or decorative finish on its own
- Performance depends on correct dilution and timing — over-dilution, missed coats, or letting the primer fully dry and dust over before topping can compromise the bond
- Water-based film is sensitive to ambient conditions; very high humidity or low temperature extends drying, while extreme heat can flash-dry the film too quickly
- Requires a sound, clean, suitably prepared substrate — it will not bridge structural cracks, compensate for a contaminated slab, or fix a substrate with rising damp
- Has a finite shelf life (around 12 months) and must be protected from frost and extreme temperatures in storage
Selection & best practice
Always treat Nitoprime 33 as an integral step of the Cemtop floor build-up, never an afterthought. Begin with a clean, sound slab — remove laitance, curing compounds, oil and dust by mechanical preparation such as grinding or shot-blasting, and make good any defects. Apply the first coat well diluted at 1:5 (primer:water by volume) and work it into the surface so it penetrates the pores; on very porous or dusty slabs expect to use a third coat. Apply the second coat at 1:3 only after the first is dry to the touch (typically 2–4 hours at 20°C, faster in Indian summer heat). The single most important rule is timing the topping: lay the Cemtop while the final primer coat is still slightly tacky — if it has fully dried and re-dusted, re-prime that area rather than pouring over a dead film. Stir the primer before use, do not over-thin beyond the specified ratios, and avoid priming when conditions will not allow the topping to follow within the working window. Protect freshly primed floors from traffic, dust and rain. Confirm the exact dilution, number of coats and overcoating window against the current Fosroc TDS for the specific Cemtop grade being used, and ask Space Arc Engineering for project-specific guidance on absorbent or problem substrates.

How we position Fosroc Nitoprime 33
Within the Fosroc range, Nitoprime 33 is the dedicated companion primer for the Cemtop family of self-levelling floor toppings (Cemtop GP, Cemtop XD and related grades) — it is not interchangeable with Fosroc’s other Nitoprime primers, which serve different roles. Nitoprime Zincrich and Zincrich Plus are zinc-rich anti-corrosion primers for steel reinforcement in the Renderoc concrete-repair system, Nitoprime 30 and Nitoprime SP are epoxy-based primers used with other Fosroc coatings and screeds, so it is important to specify Nitoprime 33 specifically when the work involves Cemtop. Against competitor systems, Nitoprime 33 occupies the same niche as the acrylic bonding primers supplied with rival self-levelling underlayments — for example Sika’s primers used ahead of SikaLevel/Sikafloor levellers, MYK Laticrete and Ardex floor primers, and the primers within Dr. Fixit and STP (Pidilite/Bostik group) flooring systems. The honest position is that a self-levelling floor should be built as a single matched system: the most reliable results come from pairing Nitoprime 33 with genuine Fosroc Cemtop rather than mixing primer and topping brands, since dilution ratios, drying behaviour and bond chemistry are tuned together. Space Arc Engineering supplies the full Fosroc Cemtop build-up and can cross-reference equivalent products if a project specification calls for an alternative, but for any Cemtop installation Nitoprime 33 is the correct, manufacturer-specified primer.
