Nitowrap CF — Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) System for Structural Strengthening

Nitowrap CF

Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) System for Structural Strengthening

Authorized Project Distributor — Fosroc India | Space Arc Engineering, Ghaziabad

Product Overview

Nitowrap CF is a carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) externally bonded reinforcement (EBR) system for the structural strengthening and upgrading of existing reinforced concrete and masonry structures. It consists of unidirectional carbon fibre fabric and compatible epoxy resin components (primer, saturant, and finishing coat), which together form a high-tensile composite laminate bonded to the surface of the structural element. By placing high-modulus carbon fibre in the tensile zone of beams and slabs, or wrapping columns and piers for confinement, the CFRP composite provides significant increases in flexural capacity, shear capacity, and ductility of the strengthened element — often doubling or tripling the load capacity of existing concrete members without the disruption of full demolition and reconstruction. Nitowrap CF is used to upgrade under-strength or deteriorated bridges, increase the load capacity of slabs and beams for change of use, repair earthquake-damaged concrete frames, and confine columns to improve ductility. The system is lightweight and can be installed with minimal disruption to building occupancy. Space Arc Engineering distributes Nitowrap CF for structural strengthening projects across Delhi NCR, Ghaziabad, and Northern India.

Applications

  • Flexural strengthening of under-strength RC beams and slabs
  • Shear strengthening of RC beams and bridge girders
  • Column confinement for ductility enhancement in seismic zones
  • Bridge deck and girder capacity increase for higher load rating
  • Strengthening of RC structures for change of use or increased loading
  • Repair and strengthening of earthquake-damaged structural frames

Key Advantages

  • Very high tensile strength to weight ratio — minimal dead load addition
  • Thin profile — minimal change to structural dimensions or headroom
  • Rapid installation with minimal disruption to building use
  • No corrosion — permanent performance in aggressive environments
  • Documented international standards (ACI 440, TR55 UK)
  • Complete system — primer, saturant, fabric all from one supplier

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Nitowrap CF be used to strengthen slabs for increased loading?

Yes. Nitowrap CF is commonly used to increase the flexural capacity of existing reinforced concrete slabs that need to carry higher loads — for example, when a building is being converted from residential to storage use, or when heavy equipment is being installed above a slab designed for lighter loads. The CFRP strips are applied to the soffit (tension face) of the slab in the direction of bending. A structural engineer should carry out the detailed design and specify the number of layers and strip width required for the specific load increase.

Is Nitowrap CF installation suitable for humid Indian conditions?

Nitowrap CF can be applied in humid conditions, but the substrate must be surface dry — free of standing water or saturated surface water. The epoxy resin components must also be kept within their specified temperature and humidity limits during mixing and application. In very high humidity (above 85% RH), the epoxy cure may be affected. Consult Space Arc Engineering regarding specific site conditions before scheduling installation.

How is the quality of the Nitowrap CF bond verified after installation?

The most common quality assurance method for bonded CFRP systems is tap testing (acoustic sounding) — the installed laminate is tapped with a coin or rod and hollow-sounding areas indicate de-bonding or voids in the adhesive layer. For critical applications, a pull-off adhesion test can be used to verify bond strength. Compliance with the minimum bond strength specified in the design (typically over 1.5 MPa) confirms adequate adhesion of the system to the substrate.
