Product Overview
Structuro 201 is a high-performance polycarboxylate ether (PCE) superplasticiser from Fosroc formulated for the production of self-compacting concrete (SCC) and very high workability structural concrete. Self-compacting concrete flows under its own weight to completely fill the formwork and surround the reinforcement without any mechanical vibration — a significant advantage for congested reinforcement, inaccessible areas, complex formwork shapes, and where vibration would disturb adjacent freshly placed concrete or sensitive structures. Producing true SCC requires more than high fluidity — the concrete must also resist segregation and bleeding even at the very high slump flow (typically 600 to 750 mm by flow table test) required for self-compaction. Structuro 201 provides the very high plasticising effect needed for SCC slump flow while the molecular architecture of the PCE polymer also imparts cohesion to the concrete paste, resisting the separation of the coarse aggregate from the mortar matrix that would occur if a conventional superplasticiser were used at high dosage. Structuro 201 is used in precast concrete plants for producing architectural concrete with high-quality surface finish, in cast-in-situ construction for congested reinforcement sections, and in any application where mechanical vibration is undesirable or impractical. The product must be used with an SCC mix design that includes appropriate powder content and aggregate grading — it is not possible to produce SCC simply by adding Structuro 201 to a conventional concrete mix. What mix design parameters are needed to produce SCC with Structuro 201?
Self-compacting concrete mix design requires careful balancing of several parameters beyond simply adding a superplasticiser. The key requirements are: sufficient total powder content (cement plus supplementary cementitious materials such as fly ash, GGBS, or limestone filler) to provide enough paste to coat the aggregate and provide flow — typically 450 to 550 kg per cubic metre of total powder; a moderate water-powder ratio (typically 0.30 to 0.40 by mass); a reduced maximum aggregate size (typically 16 mm or less); and sometimes a viscosity-modifying admixture (VMA) to improve robustness to variations in aggregate moisture. Structuro 201 provides the fluidity, but the mix design must be developed by trial to achieve the required slump flow, T500 time (flow speed), and segregation resistance simultaneously.
Can Structuro 201 be used for conventional vibrated concrete or only for SCC?
Structuro 201 is optimised for SCC and very high workability concrete, but can be used for high-performance conventional (vibrated) concrete applications at lower dosages. At lower dosage, it behaves as a high-range PCE superplasticiser similar to Auramix 350 or 400, providing high water reduction and good workability. However, for conventional vibrated concrete applications where SCC slump flow is not needed, Auramix 350 or Auramix 400 may be a more economical choice as they are also high-performance PCE admixtures. Use Structuro 201 when SCC performance (slump flow greater than 600 mm with segregation resistance) is the specific project requirement.
What testing should be done for SCC quality control on site?
Fresh SCC quality control requires the following tests at the batching and placing stage: slump flow (by flow table, EFNARC test method — target typically 600–750 mm); T500 time (time for the flow to reach 500 mm diameter — indicates viscosity and cohesion); V-funnel test (flow time through a V-shaped funnel — indicates passing ability); and L-box test (measures the ability of concrete to pass through reinforcement without blocking). These tests are more informative than standard slump for SCC because SCC must meet both fluidity and stability criteria simultaneously. A high slump flow with T500 time below 2 seconds may indicate over-fluidity and segregation risk; T500 above 5 seconds may indicate insufficient fluidity for self-compaction.
