STP ShaliCrystal 200
A surface-applied crystalline slurry that turns the concrete itself into the waterproof barrier, sealing pores and capillaries from within rather than sitting on top as a membrane.
What is it?
A cementitious crystalline waterproofing coating from STP, blended from Portland cement, fine quartz sand and reactive chemicals that grow insoluble crystals inside concrete.
Where is it used?
Water-retaining and below-grade concrete: basement rafts and walls, water tanks, reservoirs, tunnels, culverts, dam faces and bridge soffits.
Why use it?
It waterproofs the concrete body itself, resists both positive and negative water pressure, self-seals fine cracks and is safe for potable water contact.
How is it applied?
Mixed with water to a brushable slurry and applied in two coats by brush or spray, or broadcast dry-shake onto fresh slabs, then moist-cured.
About STP ShaliCrystal 200
STP ShaliCrystal 200 belongs to the crystalline family of waterproofing systems, a category that behaves very differently from the paint-on and sheet membranes most sites are used to. Instead of forming a film on the surface, the powder is blended from Portland cement, graded quartz sand and a package of reactive chemicals. Once mixed with water and applied to a concrete face, those chemicals migrate into the capillary network of the concrete and react with free lime and moisture already present in the matrix. The result is a dense growth of insoluble crystals that block the very pores and hairline channels through which water would otherwise track.
For engineers working on water-retaining and below-ground structures, that distinction matters. A membrane can be punctured, can debond, and fails the moment water finds an edge. ShaliCrystal 200 becomes part of the concrete, so it keeps working even when the coating surface is later abraded or overlaid, and it can be applied from the negative (inside) face when the external side is already buried or cast against soil. The system is non-toxic and suitable for potable water tanks, remains vapour-permeable so the slab can still breathe, and by densifying the near-surface concrete it also slows the ingress of chlorides that drive reinforcement corrosion. In practice it is specified where a long-service, maintenance-light waterproofing solution is wanted on structures that will hold or resist water for decades.
The technical insight
The mechanism is a moisture-driven, self-perpetuating chemical reaction rather than a physical barrier. The active ingredients in ShaliCrystal 200 are carried into the concrete’s capillary pores as a soluble solution; there they react with calcium hydroxide and unhydrated cement to precipitate insoluble crystalline deposits. Because the reaction only proceeds where water is present, the crystals grow precisely along the paths water is trying to follow, choking them off. The system is also latent: if a fine crack forms later and water reaches unreacted chemicals still held in the matrix, crystallisation restarts and reseals the crack. This self-healing behaviour is why crystalline treatments are trusted on structures that flex and hydrate over their life, and it is the reason coverage and adequate initial moisture during curing are so important, the reaction needs water to complete and to stay ready for the future.
Where it is used
- Waterproofing basement rafts, retaining walls and lift pits from the inside face
- Lining RCC water tanks, sumps and overhead reservoirs, including potable-water storage
- Sealing sewage and effluent treatment tanks against both containment and ground-water pressure
- Protecting tunnels, culverts, underpasses and other buried concrete structures
- Treating dam faces, spillways and irrigation channels exposed to constant hydrostatic head
- Waterproofing swimming pools, water features and podium slabs
- Densifying bridge deck soffits and pier faces exposed to run-off and splash
- Remedial sealing of green or existing concrete showing damp patches and seepage
Key advantages
- Waterproofs the concrete body itself, so protection survives surface wear and does not peel or debond like a membrane
- Resists both positive and negative water pressure, allowing application from the accessible inside face
- Self-seals fine capillary cracks that develop later, reactivating whenever moisture returns
- Non-toxic and certified safe for potable-water tanks
- Vapour-permeable, letting the slab breathe and avoiding trapped-moisture blistering
- Reduces chloride and moisture ingress, helping protect embedded reinforcement from corrosion
- Can be applied to moist or freshly set concrete, unlike many coatings that need a bone-dry substrate
- Becomes integral to the structure, giving a long service life with minimal maintenance
Limitations & considerations
- It waterproofs sound concrete, not moving structural joints, live cracks, honeycombing or tie-holes, which need dedicated joint and repair treatments first
- Self-sealing is limited to fine capillary cracks; it will not bridge wide or actively working cracks
- The crystalline reaction depends on adequate moisture and disciplined moist-curing, so hot, windy or rushed sites can under-perform
- It is a rigid cementitious system with no elongation, so it should not be relied on where significant substrate movement is expected
- Coverage and results assume a well-prepared, open-pored surface; a laitance-covered or steel-trowelled slab must be mechanically cleaned first
- As a within-the-concrete system it does not provide the physical crack-bridging of an elastomeric membrane where that is the design intent
Selection & best practice
Start with a structurally sound, clean, open-textured concrete surface: remove laitance, curing compounds, oil and loose material by wire brushing or light acid etching, then saturate the surface to a damp but not ponded condition, the reaction needs that moisture. Treat construction joints, tie-holes and any active seepage separately with an appropriate plugging or joint system before coating. Mix ShaliCrystal 200 with clean water to a lump-free, brushable slurry and apply it in two coats, laying the second while the first is still green, or broadcast it as a dry-shake onto fresh horizontal slabs. The most common failure on site is inadequate curing: keep the treated surface continuously moist for several days so the crystals can fully develop, and protect it from rain, foot traffic and drying wind during that window. Always confirm coverage, mixing ratio and curing period against the current STP technical data sheet for the specific structure.

How we position STP ShaliCrystal 200
ShaliCrystal 200 is STP’s surface-applied crystalline coating and it sits naturally alongside STP’s wider waterproofing and repair range, where a job needs joint sealing, plugging of active leaks or protective coatings, those should be specified as companion products rather than expecting the crystalline slurry to do that work. Within the crystalline approach itself there is a genuine design choice between surface-applied and integral (dosed-into-the-mix) systems, and Space Arc supplies both across brands. Where the concrete is yet to be cast and the specifier wants the crystalline protection built into every cubic metre from batching, an integral admixture is the better route; where existing or already-cast concrete has to be treated, ShaliCrystal 200 is the appropriate surface solution. We also carry equivalent crystalline and membrane systems from Fosroc, Dr. Fixit and Sika, so the specification can be matched to the client’s approved-vendor list without compromising the waterproofing strategy.
Fosroc Conplast Crystalline — Choose the Fosroc option when the crystalline protection needs to be dosed into the concrete mix at batching for new pours, rather than applied to an existing surface as ShaliCrystal 200 is.
