BrandSikaCategoryWaterproofingFormA ready-to-use, single-component water-borne polyurethane liquid membrane that cures in air to form a seamless…

What is it?

A ready-to-use, single-component water-borne polyurethane liquid membrane that cures in air to form a seamless, elastic, white roof waterproofing layer.

Where is it used?

Exposed RCC roofs, terraces and podiums on residential, commercial and institutional buildings, including renovation over weathered roofs.

Why use it?

It waterproofs and reflects heat in one system, has no seams or laps to fail, and bridges the fine cracks that open and close on Indian roofs through the year.

How is it applied?

Prime the sound, clean substrate, then brush, roller or spray two or more coats wet-in-wet to the target film build, reinforcing detailing with fleece where needed.

About Sika Sikalastic-560

Sikalastic-560 is Sika’s economical liquid-applied roof waterproofing membrane, built on the company’s water-borne co-elastic polyurethane chemistry. It arrives as a single-component white liquid that needs no mixing, no catalyst and no flame. The applicator simply rolls, brushes or sprays it onto a prepared roof, where it dries in the open air to a continuous elastomeric film. Because it is laid as a liquid, it forms without joints, overlaps or welded seams, so it wraps cleanly around parapets, drains, pipe penetrations and awkward roof geometry that sheet membranes struggle to seal.

For engineers and contractors working across Delhi NCR and the rest of India, the appeal is a single product that solves two roof problems at once. The cured film keeps water out while its bright white surface reflects a large share of incident solar radiation, lowering roof-surface temperature and easing the cooling load on the floor below. It stays flexible enough to bridge the hairline shrinkage and thermal cracks that develop on concrete roofs, resists UV and weathering without yellowing, and remains vapour permeable so trapped moisture in the slab can escape rather than blister the coating. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies it as part of a full Sika roofing build-up.

The technical insight

The performance comes from the co-elastic water-borne polyurethane binder. As the water carrier evaporates, the polymer particles coalesce into a single crosslinked film with high elongation, so the membrane can stretch across a moving crack and return without tearing rather than cracking with the concrete beneath it. Applying successive coats wet-in-wet lets each pass fuse into the last, producing one monolithic sheet instead of stacked layers with weak interfaces. Where movement or detailing demands more, an embedded reinforcement fleece is laid into the wet coat to carry tensile load and control elongation at critical junctions. The same PU film that gives this elasticity is inherently UV and weathering stable and holds its white pigment, which is why the reflective, energy-saving surface survives years of direct sun without chalking to yellow the way cheaper coatings do.

Where it is used

  • Waterproofing exposed RCC roofs and terraces on new residential and commercial buildings
  • Renovation and life-extension of weathered or leaking existing roofs without tear-off
  • Reflective cool-roof finishes to cut roof-surface temperature and cooling load
  • Sealing complex roof geometry, plant decks and areas with limited access
  • Detailing around parapets, gutters, drains, skylights and pipe penetrations
  • Refurbishment overlays on aged bituminous or coated roofs after suitable preparation
  • Podium and accessible terrace waterproofing under light foot traffic with protection
  • Institutional roofs such as schools, hospitals and warehouses needing quick, cold-applied cover

Key advantages

  • Single-component and ready to use, with no mixing, heating or open flame on site
  • Seamless liquid application that wraps details and eliminates joints and laps
  • Water-based and low-odour, safer to handle in occupied and enclosed buildings
  • Highly elastic film that bridges fine shrinkage and thermal cracks in the slab
  • Reflective white surface lowers roof temperature and interior cooling demand
  • UV and weathering resistant with no yellowing on fully exposed roofs
  • Vapour permeable, allowing residual slab moisture to escape without blistering
  • Cold-applied and fast to install, well suited to renovation and re-coating work

Limitations & considerations

  • Not intended for permanently submerged or hydrostatic below-grade waterproofing such as basements and water tanks
  • Needs a dry weather window; rain on the fresh, uncured film can wash it out or mar the finish
  • Substrate must be sound, clean and correctly primed, and ponding areas need falls corrected first
  • Cannot be applied below the minimum ambient and substrate temperatures, which limits cold-season and monsoon work
  • Film build and consumption depend heavily on substrate porosity and profile, so trials govern true coverage
  • Exposed trafficked areas need a protective screed or wearing layer for durability

Selection & best practice

Start with a structurally sound roof: repair live cracks, correct falls so water drains rather than ponds, and remove laitance, dust, oil and loose material. Prime absorbent concrete with the matching Sika primer and let it develop before coating. Apply the first coat generously, then follow wet-in-wet with the second coat to build the specified film thickness, embedding reinforcement fleece into wet material at parapet junctions, drains, penetrations and any moving detail. Work only within the recommended temperature window and with a clear dry-weather forecast so the membrane can coalesce fully before any rain. Check wet-film thickness as you go, keep coats continuous with no pinholes, and allow proper cure before exposing the roof to traffic or standing water.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sikalastic-560 suitable for a roof that will be walked on?
It is designed mainly for exposed, non-trafficked and lightly accessed roofs. For terraces with regular foot traffic, protect the membrane with a suitable screed or wearing layer, or choose a system rated for traffic. Space Arc can specify the right build-up for your usage.
Can it be applied over my old, leaking roof without removing it?
In most cases yes. Weathered and previously coated roofs can be overlaid after proper cleaning, crack repair, correcting falls and priming. A site assessment confirms the substrate is sound enough to take the coating.
How many coats are needed and how much material will my roof take?
It is applied in two or more coats wet-in-wet. Typical total consumption is around 1.0 to 2.1 kg/m2, but porous or rough concrete absorbs more, so a site trial gives the accurate figure for estimating.
Does the white colour really help with heat?
Yes. The reflective white surface bounces back a large share of solar radiation, lowering roof-surface temperature and easing the cooling load on the space below, which is a real benefit in Indian summers.
Can I apply it during the monsoon?
It needs a dry weather window. Rain on the fresh, uncured film can damage it, so application is planned around clear conditions and above the minimum temperature. Monsoon-season work should be scheduled carefully or deferred.
Is it safe to use on an occupied building?
It is water-based, low-odour and cold-applied with no open flame, which makes it far more suitable for occupied and enclosed buildings than torch-applied or solvent-heavy systems.

How we position Sika Sikalastic-560

Sikalastic-560 sits in Sika’s liquid-applied roofing range as the economical, reflective, water-based option. Within the same Sika family, step up to Sikalastic-590 IN or the Sikalastic-610 R IN membrane for more demanding or higher-performance roofs, choose Sikalastic-510 CoolCoat IN where a dedicated reflective cool-coat is the priority, and always pair it with Sikalastic-11 Primer W on absorbent substrates plus Sika reinforcement fleece for detailing. For below-grade, tanking or hydrostatic waterproofing, this coating is the wrong tool. Space Arc can instead specify a torch-applied membrane such as Fosroc Proofex Torchseal for basements and retaining structures, or cementitious systems where a rigid barrier is required.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Brushbond Roofguard — A fibre-reinforced acrylic elastomeric roof coating, worth considering when a specifier wants a reflective, crack-bridging exposed-roof membrane within the Fosroc system rather than Sika’s water-based PU.
