STP ShaliCrystal 100

A cementitious crystalline admixture that turns the concrete itself into the waterproofing layer, sealing capillaries from within and self-healing hairline cracks.

BrandSTPCategoryWaterproofingFormA powder crystalline waterproofing admixture from STP that is batched directly into concrete, where it grows…

What is it?

A powder crystalline waterproofing admixture from STP that is batched directly into concrete, where it grows insoluble crystals through the capillary network to block water.

Where is it used?

Water-retaining structures, basements, rafts, pile caps, tunnels, metro works, reservoirs and any below-grade or hydrostatic-load concrete.

Why use it?

It waterproofs through the full section rather than sitting on the surface, so there is no membrane to puncture, debond or fail at construction joints.

How is it applied?

Dosed at 1 to 2 percent by weight of cement and blended into the mix during batching; no separate coating, primer or curing membrane is needed.

About STP ShaliCrystal 100

STP ShaliCrystal 100 is an integral crystalline waterproofing admixture supplied as a dry cementitious powder that is added to concrete at the batching stage. Once in the mix, its active chemistry reacts with the free water and unhydrated cement present in every concrete pour to grow a dense network of insoluble crystals inside the capillary pores and micro-cracks. The result is concrete that carries its own waterproofing throughout the cross-section, rather than depending on a coating or sheet membrane applied afterwards. For engineers dealing with water-retaining and below-grade structures, this shifts waterproofing from a vulnerable surface layer to a permanent property of the concrete itself.

The practical appeal for Indian project teams is durability and buildability. Because the protection is grown inside the matrix, it cannot be torn during backfilling, punctured by following trades, or peeled off by hydrostatic pressure acting from the negative side. The crystals remain dormant and reactivate whenever fresh moisture appears, which is what gives the product its self-healing behaviour against fine cracks that open up later in a structure’s life. ShaliCrystal 100 is manufactured by STP Limited, a construction-chemicals house with a long track record in the Indian waterproofing market, and Space Arc Engineering supplies and supports it as an authorised channel across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

The technical insight

The mechanism is diffusion-driven crystal growth. The admixture’s reactive silicates and proprietary catalysts stay dormant in cured concrete until they meet water. When moisture penetrates a capillary or a hairline crack, the chemistry reacts with calcium hydroxide and unhydrated cement to precipitate insoluble crystalline deposits that progressively fill and block the pore. Because water is the trigger, the reaction chases the leak: wherever moisture tries to travel, crystals form and choke the path. This is why the product self-heals hairline cracks up to roughly 0.4 mm that develop after casting, and why protection is not lost if the surface is later chipped or abraded, the reactive chemistry still sits deep in the section. The dense crystalline structure also lowers the concrete’s permeability and chloride-ion penetration, which is the property assessed by rapid chloride permeability testing to ASTM C1202 and directly relevant to durability and reinforcement protection in aggressive ground.

Where it is used

  • Water-retaining structures such as reservoirs, water tanks, STPs and clarifiers
  • Basement rafts, retaining walls and below-grade slabs under hydrostatic head
  • Foundation slabs, pile caps and ground beams in high water-table sites
  • Tunnels, metro box structures and underground stations
  • Roof gardens and podium slabs where a durable buried waterproofing is needed
  • Cement-sand screeds and plaster requiring integral dampproofing
  • Precast elements and segments needing built-in watertightness
  • Swimming pools and other permanently wet concrete structures

Key advantages

  • Waterproofs the full concrete section, so there is no surface film to crack, blister or debond
  • Self-heals hairline cracks up to about 0.4 mm whenever moisture reactivates the crystals
  • Resists high hydrostatic pressure and works against water acting from the negative side
  • Cannot be damaged by backfilling, following trades or UV once the concrete is placed
  • Reduces permeability and chloride-ion ingress, improving long-term durability and rebar protection
  • Batched in at the plant, so it adds no separate application step or drying time on site
  • Suitable for potable-water and water-retaining structures when correctly specified
  • Protects the structure for its service life rather than a coating’s shorter cycle

Limitations & considerations

  • It waterproofs concrete, not joints, tie-holes or penetrations, which still need proper waterstops and joint sealants
  • Effectiveness depends on a well-designed, well-compacted mix; it cannot cure honeycombing, cold joints or poor workmanship
  • Dosage and mix compatibility should be trial-batched, as it can influence workability and setting with some cements and admixtures
  • Self-healing is limited to fine cracks; structural or moving cracks need dedicated crack-injection or joint treatment
  • It is a concrete admixture, not a remedial coating, so it cannot be brushed onto existing hardened concrete
  • Adequate curing is still essential for the crystalline reaction to develop fully

Selection & best practice

Add ShaliCrystal 100 at 1 to 2 percent by weight of cement, confirming the exact rate for your grade and exposure with a site trial mix. Introduce the powder with the mixing water or blend it with the dry materials so it disperses uniformly, and extend mixing to ensure it is fully distributed before discharge. Keep the concrete well compacted and, importantly, cure it thoroughly, because moist curing drives the early crystal growth that develops watertightness. Treat construction joints, tie-rod holes and penetrations separately with waterstops, crystalline slurry or joint sealants, as the admixture protects the concrete body but not these detailing points. Verify compatibility when other admixtures such as superplasticisers are in the mix.

Industry use cases

Water & Wastewater

Integral waterproofing for reservoirs, water tanks and STP structures in permanent contact with water, where a buried membrane would be impractical to maintain.

Metro & Tunnelling

Watertight box structures, stations and tunnel concrete under high water table, benefiting from self-healing against fine cracks that open with ground movement.

Commercial & Residential Basements

Rafts and retaining walls under hydrostatic head, protected from the inside so the waterproofing survives backfilling and follow-on works.

Infrastructure Foundations

Pile caps, ground beams and foundation slabs in aggressive, high-water-table ground where reduced permeability protects reinforcement over the design life.

Podiums & Roof Gardens

Landscaped slabs where a durable integral waterproofing avoids the risk of membrane damage under soil, drainage and planting loads.

Frequently asked questions

How is ShaliCrystal 100 different from a surface waterproofing coating?
A coating sits on top of the concrete and can crack, blister or debond. ShaliCrystal 100 is dosed into the mix and grows crystals inside the concrete, so the whole section becomes waterproof and there is no film to fail.
What dosage should I use?
It is normally added at 1 to 2 percent by weight of cement. Confirm the exact rate for your mix design and exposure with a trial batch, since cement type and other admixtures can affect the optimum dosage.
Does it really self-heal cracks?
Yes, within limits. The dormant crystalline chemistry reactivates when water reaches a fine crack and precipitates crystals to seal it, effective for hairline cracks up to around 0.4 mm. Structural or moving cracks still need dedicated crack repair.
Can it be used for potable-water tanks?
Crystalline admixtures are widely specified for water-retaining and potable-water structures. Confirm the specific approval and any curing or flushing requirements for your project before use in drinking-water contact.
Does adding it replace waterstops at joints?
No. The admixture waterproofs the concrete body but not construction joints, tie-holes or penetrations. These still require waterstops, crystalline slurry or joint sealants as part of the overall waterproofing detail.
Does Space Arc supply it across India?
Yes. Space Arc Engineering supplies STP ShaliCrystal 100 as an authorised channel with delivery across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, along with technical support on dosage, mix compatibility and joint detailing.

How we position STP ShaliCrystal 100

ShaliCrystal 100 is STP’s answer to integral, self-healing waterproofing and sits alongside STP’s wider ShaliCrystal and Shalibond ranges for slurry-applied crystalline coatings, bonding agents and joint treatments that complete the below-grade system. Because the admixture protects only the concrete body, pair it with proper waterstops and STP joint sealants at construction joints and penetrations. Where a project standardises on Fosroc, the equivalent integral crystalline admixture is Conplast Crystalline; and for teams that only need water reduction and densification rather than active crystalline self-healing, a lignosulphonate integral admixture such as Fosroc Conplast X421IC is the simpler, lower-cost route. Space Arc supplies all of these brand families and can advise which fits the exposure, specification and budget.
