What is it?

A 2K (3:1 by weight) solvent-free, thixotropic structural epoxy adhesive from STP Limited, purpose-built for gluing precast concrete bridge segments during span-by-span and balanced-cantilever erection.

Where is it used?

Segmental precast bridge and viaduct joints, plus anchoring of bolts, dowels and steel bars, and bonding of external steel plates onto beams, columns and slabs.

Why use it?

It delivers high early strength, cures free of shrinkage, tolerates damp concrete, and stays put on vertical and overhead joint faces without sagging, so match-cast segments align and lock before cure.

How is it applied?

Machine-mix Part A and Part B for at least 3 minutes to a uniform grey, trowel a 1-3 mm bead onto prepared faces, then bring the segments together and stress within the open time.

About STP ShaliBond S

STP ShaliBond S sits at the sharp end of infrastructure construction, where precast box-girder or I-girder segments are cast against one another and then re-assembled on site. In that method the adhesive is not a finishing product; it is the structural interface between two heavy elements that will carry live traffic loads for decades. ShaliBond S is a two-part epoxy – an off-white resin (Part A) and a black hardener (Part B) blended 3:1 by weight – that cures into a rigid, gap-filling film. Its thixotropic body is the defining trait: applied at 1-3 mm, it holds a clean bead on vertical and overhead match-cast faces and does not slump before the segment is pulled up and temporarily post-tensioned.

For engineers and erection contractors working across Delhi NCR and pan-India, the appeal is a material that behaves predictably on a live gantry. ShaliBond S gains strength quickly, cures without shrinkage, and bonds to concrete that is dry or damp – a real advantage during monsoon-season casting yards and night erection. STP validates it against FIP acceptance criteria for segmental bridge adhesives, the reference framework Indian consultants and the NHAI-tier project teams look for. Space Arc Engineering supplies ShaliBond S as an authorised distributor and can support site teams on surface prep, mixing discipline and joint methodology so the product performs the way the data sheet promises.

The technical insight

The engineering logic of ShaliBond S is that the glued joint must behave as if the two segments were one continuous casting. Three properties make that possible. First, thixotropy: the epoxy is formulated to resist flow under its own weight (sag under 15 mm in 10 minutes, no sag at 3 mm) yet spread easily under the compressive force of jacking, so surplus material extrudes out of the bond line and confirms full contact. Second, a controlled open time of roughly 62-68 minutes at 40-45 degrees C gives crews a realistic window to butter the faces, mate the segment and apply temporary prestress before the resin becomes immobile. Third, near-zero shrinkage (0.2-0.4 percent) means the film does not pull away from either face as it hardens, preserving continuous load transfer. Because the cured epoxy is impermeable to liquid water and vapour and is heat-resistant beyond +50 degrees C, the joint stays watertight and stable under the thermal cycling a bridge deck sees. The proof is in the failure mode: FIP bond and tensile-bending tests on wet concrete break through the parent concrete, not the glue line – the adhesive is stronger than the substrate it joins.

Where it is used

  • Bonding precast match-cast segments in bridges, flyovers and metro viaducts during span-by-span and balanced-cantilever erection
  • Forming structural, watertight joints between box-girder and I-girder segments before temporary and permanent post-tensioning
  • Anchoring bolts, dowels and steel reinforcing bars into hardened concrete
  • Bonding external steel reinforcing plates to beams, columns and slabs for structural strengthening
  • Structural bonding on damp or freshly water-jetted concrete faces where moisture-tolerant epoxies are required
  • Vertical and overhead joint bonding where a non-sag adhesive is essential
  • Cantilever construction joints demanding high early strength before the next segment is hung
  • Load-transfer joints exposed to sustained load and elevated service temperature

Key advantages

  • High initial strength gain lets erection cycles advance quickly without waiting days for cure
  • Shrinkage-free curing (0.2-0.4 percent) keeps the film in full contact with both concrete faces
  • Thixotropic, non-sag body holds a clean 1-3 mm bead on vertical and overhead joints
  • Moisture-tolerant – bonds to both dry and damp concrete, so casting and erection are not stalled by weather
  • No primer required, saving a coat and a curing step on the critical path
  • Impermeable to liquid water and water vapour, giving joints a watertight seal
  • No creep under sustained load even at elevated temperature, and heat resistant beyond +50 degrees C
  • FIP-verified performance with bond and tensile-bending tests failing in the concrete, not the glue line

Limitations & considerations

  • Application temperature is restricted to +25 to +45 degrees C; it is not the correct grade for cold-weather or low-temperature erection
  • Pot life is short (roughly 21-25 minutes for a 100 g mass at 60 degrees C), so only the quantity usable within pot life should be mixed
  • Requires strict 3:1 by-weight proportioning and mechanical mixing (300-600 rpm) for at least 3 minutes – hand mixing or off-ratio batches compromise the joint
  • The product is flammable and must be kept away from ignition sources with adequate ventilation during use
  • Surfaces must be structurally sound and grit-blasted or water-jetted (around 150 bar) and free of laitance, oil and curing membrane; poor prep undermines the bond
  • Not a cosmetic or thin-film repair material – it is a structural bonding epoxy for defined joint thicknesses of 1-3 mm

Selection & best practice

Get proportioning and prep right and ShaliBond S is forgiving on site. Start with structurally sound faces cleaned by wet grit blasting or high-pressure water jetting (around 150 bar) to strip laitance, mould-release agent and curing membrane, then remove all dust. Mix by machine only: stir Part A briefly, add Part B at the 3:1 weight ratio, and blend at 300-600 rpm for at least 3 minutes until every white and black streak disappears into a uniform grey – scrape the container sides and avoid over-mixing that entrains air. Batch only what the crew can place within pot life. Trowel a 1-3 mm layer onto the prepared face so a little material squeezes out of the bond line under jacking pressure, confirming full contact, then bring the two elements together within the open time and hold them in position with temporary prestress until cure. Because the working window shortens as temperature climbs, plan night or shaded erection in peak summer. Clean tools immediately with STP Thinner before the epoxy hardens.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mixing ratio for ShaliBond S?
Part A (off-white resin) to Part B (black hardener) is 3:1 by weight. Mechanically mix at 300-600 rpm for at least 3 minutes until the white and black streaks disappear into a uniform grey, and batch only what you can place within pot life.
At what temperature can ShaliBond S be applied?
It is formulated for application between +25 and +45 degrees C. In peak summer, plan night or shaded erection because pot life and open time shorten as the temperature rises; it is not the right grade for cold-weather bonding.
How long is the pot life and open time?
Pot life is about 21-25 minutes for a 100 g mass at 60 degrees C, and open time is roughly 62-68 minutes at 40-45 degrees C. The open time is your window to mate the segments and apply temporary prestress before the resin becomes immobile.
Can it be used on damp concrete?
Yes. ShaliBond S is moisture-tolerant and bonds to both dry and damp concrete, and its hardening is not affected by humidity – a practical advantage for monsoon-season casting yards and night erection. Faces must still be sound, grit-blasted or water-jetted and free of laitance and contaminants.
What thickness and coverage should I plan for?
Apply a 1-3 mm layer so a small quantity extrudes out of the bond line under jacking pressure, confirming full contact. Consumption is approximately 2 kg/m2 per mm of thickness, varying with surface porosity, application method and wastage.
What standard does ShaliBond S meet and how is it packed?
It meets the acceptance-test and verification requirements of the FIP framework for segmental bridge adhesives, the reference Indian consultants look for. It is supplied in a 6 kg unit pack (4.5 kg Part A plus 1.5 kg Part B) with a 12-month shelf life in sealed storage at 5-38 degrees C.
