About Fosroc Nitoproof 110
Fosroc Nitoproof 110 is a single-component, low-viscosity blend of selected bitumens that cures by solvent release into a high-quality, tough and flexible black bituminous film. It is one of the most economical members of Fosroc’s Nitoproof waterproofing range and is widely specified across India where a simple, reliable barrier to liquid water and water vapour is needed rather than a high-build, crack-bridging elastomeric system. Once cured, the film is tough and resistant to most naturally occurring chemicals found in soils and ground water, which is why it has long been a default choice for protecting buried and backfilled concrete. The product is designed to do several jobs from a single tin: it acts as a vapour barrier, a damp-proof course, a below-ground concrete protective coating, a concrete curing membrane that retains mix water, and a corrosion-protection coating for embedded steel and metal surfaces. A key practical advantage for Indian site conditions is that Nitoproof 110 can be applied to damp concrete, brick and plaster — provided there is no free surface water or active bleed — so contractors are not forced to wait for substrates to bone-dry before sealing. It is applied by brush, roller or conventional spray to prepared surfaces, dries quickly, and bonds well to most common building substrates. For projects that need a heavier film build, the system is designed to be upgraded by applying Nitoproof 120 as the second coat over a Nitoproof 110 base, keeping the two products in the same compatible family. For Space Arc Engineering’s clients — contractors, waterproofing applicators, RMC and precast yards, and PMC/consultants across Delhi NCR and Pan-India — Nitoproof 110 fills the role of a fast, budget-friendly tanking and curing coat where a full liquid-applied membrane would be over-specified.
The technical insight
Chemically, Nitoproof 110 is a solvent-borne bituminous coating, not a polyurethane, acrylic or cementitious membrane — so its performance envelope is different from elastomeric products like Nitoproof 800/600. It is supplied as a single component with a minimum bitumen content of 60% and a specific gravity of about 1.02, and it dries by solvent evaporation rather than chemical cure. That dependence on solvent release explains its two key field behaviours: the overcoating time of minimum 2 hours at 35°C (longer in cooler weather) before the second coat, and the firm application-temperature window — work should not start if the substrate is below 6°C or above 50°C. The coating itself is not flammable once handled correctly, though the associated Fosroc Solvent 102 used for cleaning cured material is flammable (flash point 33°C). As a curing membrane, two coats deliver a curing efficiency in excess of 80%, satisfying the water-retention requirements of ASTM C309 and BS 6949:1991. Because it is a relatively thin bituminous film rather than a reinforced high-build membrane, it relies on correct two-coat, cross-applied build and a properly prepared substrate (SA 2½ grit-blast on steel; clean, laitance-free, oil-free concrete) to achieve a continuous, defect-free barrier.
Where it is used
- Horizontal and vertical damp-proof membranes / damp-proof courses (DPC) in masonry and concrete construction
- Below-ground protection of foundations, retaining walls, pile caps and backfilled concrete against soil moisture and ground water
- Concrete curing membrane on slabs, screeds and structural elements to retain mix water (ASTM C309 / BS 6949 compliant)
- Vapour barriers beneath screeds, renders and floor finishes to block rising moisture and water vapour
- Corrosion-protection coating on embedded or buried steel and metal surfaces (e.g. tank exteriors, embedded sections, ducts)
- Primer/base coat in a two-coat tanking system, with Nitoproof 120 applied over it where a thicker film build is required
Key advantages
- Single component — no mixing, ready to use straight from the drum after stirring
- Economical with a high coverage rate (2.0–7.0 m²/litre per coat), making it cost-effective for large areas
- Can be applied to damp concrete, brick and plaster (no free surface water), reducing site waiting time
- Quick drying with a 2-hour minimum overcoat time at 35°C, supporting same-day two-coat application
- Tough cured film resistant to most naturally occurring soil and ground-water chemicals
- Excellent adhesion to most common building substrates and excellent water retention as a curing compound
- Versatile — one product serves as DPC, vapour barrier, below-ground protection, curing membrane and metal corrosion protection
- Easily repaired — damaged areas can simply be overcoated to restore membrane continuity
- Compatible upgrade path to Nitoproof 120 for higher film build within the same Fosroc system
Limitations & considerations
- Solvent-borne bitumen film — it is a thin protective coating, not a reinforced, high-elongation crack-bridging membrane; not suited to substrates with significant live/structural movement
- Black bituminous finish only — not UV-stable or decorative; not intended as an exposed roof or trafficable topcoat
- Application temperature is restricted to substrates between 6°C and 50°C; do not apply in colder or hotter conditions
- Substrate must be sound, clean and free of free surface water, oil, grease, laitance, rust and mill scale — performance depends heavily on preparation (SA 2½ blast on steel)
- Bituminous coatings can bleed/stain and may be incompatible with some bitumen-sensitive finishes, sealants and certain polystyrene insulants — check compatibility
- Stir before use and protect from temperatures below 10°C in storage; shelf life is limited to about 12 months unopened
- Cured material can only be removed with Fosroc Solvent 102 (flammable), so tools must be cleaned with water before the coating dries
Selection & best practice
Prepare the substrate thoroughly first: concrete, brick and plaster must be clean, sound and free of laitance, oil, grease and loose particles, with no free surface water or active bleed; steel should be grit-blasted to SA 2½ for optimum adhesion. Stir the drum well, then apply two full coats of Nitoproof 110 by brush, roller or spray, laying the second coat at right angles to the first to eliminate pinholes — targeting roughly 3 m²/litre for damp-proof membranes, or two coats at 5 m²/litre per coat to meet ASTM C309 as a curing compound. Respect the minimum 2-hour overcoat interval at 35°C (allow longer in cooler weather) and keep the substrate temperature between 6°C and 50°C. Where a thicker film is specified, use Nitoproof 120 as the second coat; where the membrane will be covered by a screed or render, broadcast clean 2 mm grit into the wet second coat as a mechanical key and remove loose grit before placing the topping. Always confirm the current TDS and a project-specific specification, and run a test patch on doubtful or damp substrates.

How we position Fosroc Nitoproof 110
Within Fosroc’s own range, Nitoproof 110 sits at the economical, entry-level end of the Nitoproof family — a thin bituminous barrier rather than a reinforced, high-build membrane. It is closely related to Nitoproof 120 (a bituminous coating designed to be used as the heavier second coat over a 110 base) and is often paired with the Nitoproof 100 primer family for smooth or difficult substrates. Where projects demand UV resistance, high elongation and crack-bridging for exposed roofs, terraces, podiums or wet areas, the better fit is Fosroc’s elastomeric liquid-applied systems such as Nitoproof 600 or the polyurethane Nitoproof 800 / Nitoproof 900 ranges, not Nitoproof 110. For curing, contractors may alternatively consider Fosroc’s resin-based curing compounds where a non-bituminous, lighter-coloured finish is preferred. Among competing brands available in India, credible alternatives for the same damp-proofing, below-ground protection and bituminous coating roles include Sika’s bituminous coatings (e.g. the Sika Igolflex / bitumen-emulsion range), Pidilite Dr. Fixit’s bitumen-based products such as Dr. Fixit Primeseal / Bitumen Coating, STP Limited’s Shalimar-heritage bituminous coatings, and MBS-type modified bituminous coatings from regional manufacturers. Nitoproof 110’s strengths against these are its single-component simplicity, high coverage rate, ability to take damp substrates and its ASTM C309 / BS 6949 curing credentials — making it a dependable, low-cost specification where a flexible bituminous barrier, not a premium elastomeric membrane, is what the design actually calls for.
