About Fosroc Auramix 270
Fosroc Auramix 270 is a new-generation, multifunctional plasticising water-reducing admixture engineered for ready-mixed concrete. Unlike older lignosulphonate-based plasticisers, it is built on a blend of synthetic and natural polymers that disperse cement particles far more effectively, releasing trapped water and unlocking the strength and durability already present in the mix design. The result is concrete that is easier to place, looks better off the form, and is more compact and durable, without adding water at the truck or pump.
Auramix 270 sits within Fosroc’s well-known Auramix family of admixtures for ready-mix concrete. It is positioned as a mid-to-high-tier plasticiser/water reducer, below the high-range superplasticisers but considerably more effective than basic first-generation plasticisers. Its defining commercial benefit is workability retention in hot weather, a recurring problem on Indian sites where high ambient temperatures cause rapid slump loss, premature stiffening and the temptation to retemper with water. By holding workability for longer, Auramix 270 lets RMC producers and contractors deliver and place concrete to the design water-cement ratio rather than compromising it at the point of discharge.
For procurement teams and consultants, the appeal is practical: a single, water-based, non-flammable admixture that reduces cement or water demand, tightens quality control across truckloads, and improves the surface finish of structural and architectural concrete. It is compatible with other Fosroc admixtures in the same mix when each is dosed separately, allowing it to be paired with retarders or air-entrainers as a site demands. Space Arc Engineering supplies Auramix 270 as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with technical support for trial mixes and dosage optimisation.
The technical insight
The performance of Auramix 270 comes from polymer-based cement-particle dispersion rather than simple surface wetting. Freshly mixed cement grains tend to flocculate, trapping a portion of the gauging water inside loose clusters where it does no useful work for flow. The synthetic and natural polymers in Auramix 270 adsorb onto the cement surfaces and keep the particles apart through a combination of electrostatic and steric repulsion, freeing that trapped water. That liberated water is what allows the same workability to be achieved with 15-25% less mixing water, or alternatively the same water content to yield a much higher slump.
Reducing the water without reducing workability lowers the effective water-cement ratio, which is the single most important lever on compressive strength, permeability and long-term durability. In practice this lets a producer either raise strength at fixed cement content, or trim cement content at fixed strength for a more economical and lower-carbon mix. The steric (physical) component of the dispersion is also what gives the admixture its hot-weather slump retention: the polymer keeps working as the mix warms, so the plasticising effect is maintained even in hot climates where conventional plasticisers fade quickly. A practical caution from the manufacturer’s data: an overdose of roughly twice the maximum recommended dosage can cause delayed setting and additional entrapped air, so dispensing accuracy matters.
Where it is used
- Ready-mixed concrete (RMC) production where consistent, repeatable workability is required across every truckload
- Hot-weather concreting on Indian sites prone to rapid slump loss and premature stiffening
- Structural concrete for foundations, columns, beams, slabs and frames in buildings and infrastructure
- Water-reduced, durability-focused mixes targeting lower permeability and a reduced effective water-cement ratio
- Cement-optimised mix designs aiming to cut cement content (and embodied carbon) at a fixed strength grade
- Architectural and fair-faced concrete where improved compactness and surface appearance off the form matter
- Pumped concrete needing retained flow over longer haul and placement times
- Mixes incorporating supplementary cementitious materials such as fly ash, slag (GGBS) or microsilica
Key advantages
- Strong water reduction of 15-25% depending on dosage, improving strength and durability potential
- Workability and plasticising effect retained even in hot weather, reducing the temptation to retemper with water
- Improves the appearance and compactness of hardened concrete for better finish and lower permeability
- Water-based and non-flammable, making site storage and handling straightforward
- Compatible with other Fosroc admixtures in the same mix when each is dosed separately
- Chloride-free formulation (water-soluble chloride content not more than 0.10%), suitable for reinforced and prestressed concrete
- Complies with EN 934-2:2010 Table 2 requirements for a water reducer/plasticiser
- Wide dosage window with a straightforward trial-based optimisation, supported by Space Arc’s technical team
Limitations & considerations
- As a plasticiser/water reducer it gives lower water reduction than a high-range superplasticiser; for very high water reduction or self-compacting concrete a stronger Auramix or Conplast superplasticiser is more appropriate
- Overdosing (around twice the maximum recommended rate) can cause delayed setting and additional entrapped air
- Optimum dosage must be established by site trials with the actual materials, cement and conditions; it is not a fixed single value
- It is not an air-entraining agent or a primary set-retarder; where deliberate air entrainment or strong retardation is needed, a dedicated admixture should be combined
- Effects depend on a sound base mix design, good aggregate grading and proper batching control; it cannot rescue a fundamentally poor mix
- When using multiple admixtures, they must be added separately and not pre-blended together, or compatibility problems can arise
Selection & best practice
Always establish the working dosage by laboratory and site trials using the project’s own cement, aggregates and SCMs before production, starting within the 0.5-1.2 litres per 100 kg cementitious range and dialling in to the target slump and strength. Add Auramix 270 with the gauging water or directly into the mixer at the same time as the water, never onto dry cement or aggregate, and use a calibrated automatic dispenser to avoid the delayed-set and air-entrapment risks of overdosing. Where Auramix 270 is combined with other Fosroc admixtures, dose each one separately into the mix rather than pre-mixing them. Keep the admixture in sealed original containers, protected from frost and direct sun, and maintain batch records so workability and strength can be traced truck-to-truck. Space Arc Engineering can support trial mixes and dosage optimisation for Delhi NCR and Pan-India projects.

How we position Fosroc Auramix 270
Within the Fosroc range, Auramix 270 is a mid-to-high-tier plasticiser/water reducer that bridges basic first-generation plasticisers and the high-range superplasticisers. For projects needing greater water reduction, retardation or self-compacting performance, contractors typically step up to stronger members of the Auramix family or to Fosroc’s Conplast superplasticisers (such as Conplast SP430), and pair it with a Conplast retarder or curing compound where set control or curing is critical. Against competitor offerings, Auramix 270 competes most directly with Sika’s plasticiser/water-reducer range (for example the Sika Plastiment and ViscoCrete families), Master Builders Solutions (MBS) MasterPozzolith and MasterGlenium admixtures, and the admixture lines from Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and STP. Many of these alternatives are credible and widely specified; the practical case for Auramix 270 rests on its polymer-based dispersion, dependable hot-weather workability retention, EN 934-2 compliance and the backing of Fosroc’s established RMC support network. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, Space Arc Engineering positions it as a reliable, well-supported default plasticiser for ready-mix and structural concrete in Delhi NCR and across India, with the rest of the Fosroc admixture and concrete-care portfolio available alongside it for more demanding mix designs.
