What is it?

A ready-to-use, polycarboxylic-ether (PCE) based high-performance superplasticiser with an inbuilt viscosity-modifying agent (VMA), engineered for very low water-cement ratios and long workability retention.

Where is it used?

Self-compacting concrete (SCC), high-rise pumped concrete, precast and ready-mix plants, ultra-high-strength and high-performance mixes, and slender/heavily-reinforced sections across infrastructure, commercial and industrial projects.

Why use it?

It cuts water demand sharply while holding slump for long haul/pump times, delivering higher early and ultimate strength, better pumpability, lower shrinkage and creep, and improved durability without segregation.

How is it applied?

Dispensed at the batching plant as a measured liquid dose (typically 0.5–2.0 kg per 100 kg cementitious) added with the mixing water; never onto dry cement. Site trials fix the optimum dose for the target slump-flow and strength.

About Fosroc Auramix 500

Fosroc Auramix 500 sits at the top of Fosroc’s Auramix range of concrete admixtures and is built on polycarboxylic-ether (PCE) polymer technology. Unlike older naphthalene- or melamine-sulphonate superplasticisers that work mainly by electrostatic dispersion, the long, comb-shaped PCE molecules in Auramix 500 disperse cement grains by steric hindrance — physically holding particles apart. This lets a concrete producer pull the water-cement ratio down dramatically while still achieving the high, free-flowing workability needed for self-compacting and ultra-high-strength concrete. A distinguishing feature of the 500 grade is its inbuilt viscosity-modifying agent (VMA), which stabilises the mix against bleeding and segregation at the high flow levels SCC demands, so producers often need not dose a separate VMA. For contractors, consultants and ready-mix producers across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Auramix 500 is the admixture reached for when the brief calls for the most demanding combination of flowability, strength and durability in a single product. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, Space Arc Engineering supplies genuine Auramix 500 with batch documentation, technical back-up and dosage-trial support.

The technical insight

The performance ceiling of Auramix 500 comes from the steric-dispersion behaviour of its PCE backbone combined with the inbuilt VMA. The water reduction achievable is high enough to take mixes into the ultra-high-strength domain at very low w/c ratios, and because dispersion is steric rather than purely ionic, slump-flow is retained far longer than with sulphonated plasticisers — critical for long pump runs to upper floors and for ready-mix concrete with extended haul-and-place windows. Lower mix viscosity eases pumping pressure and reduces line blockage risk on high-rise pours. The denser, lower-porosity matrix that results raises the elastic (E) modulus, improves bond/adhesion to reinforcing and prestressing steel, and increases resistance to carbonation and chloride ingress, while lower water content reduces drying shrinkage and creep. Auramix 500 is compatible with all common cements except high-alumina cement, and works well with supplementary cementitious materials — fly ash, GGBS and microsilica — which makes it a natural fit for low-carbon and high-durability mix designs. It is supplied chloride-free, consistent with reinforced-concrete requirements under IS 456, and is formulated to give low additional air entrainment so design air content is not disturbed.

Where it is used

  • Self-compacting concrete (SCC) for congested, heavily-reinforced or architecturally complex sections
  • High-rise and long-distance pumped concrete where low viscosity and slump retention are critical
  • Ultra-high-strength and high-performance concrete at very low water-cement ratios
  • Precast and prestressed concrete elements requiring high early strength and fine surface finish
  • Ready-mix concrete needing extended workability retention over long haul and placing times
  • Slender structural sections, thin walls and complex formwork where full compaction by vibration is impractical
  • High-durability concrete for marine, industrial and infrastructure exposure where low permeability is specified

Key advantages

  • PCE chemistry delivers very high water reduction for ultra-high-strength, low-w/c mixes
  • Inbuilt VMA stabilises SCC against bleeding and segregation, often removing the need for a separate VMA
  • Long workability/slump-flow retention suited to high-rise pumping and long ready-mix haul times
  • Lower mix viscosity eases pumping and reduces line pressure and blockage risk
  • Higher elastic (E) modulus, improved steel bond and better carbonation/chloride resistance
  • Reduced drying shrinkage and creep from the lower water content
  • Chloride-free and compatible with fly ash, GGBS and microsilica for durable, lower-carbon mixes
  • Compatible with all common cements except high-alumina cement

Limitations & considerations

  • Overdosing can cause retardation, excessive flow, bleeding or segregation — site trials are essential before production
  • Not compatible with high-alumina cement
  • Performance is sensitive to mix design, aggregate grading and SCM type; the dose that suits one mix may not suit another
  • As a high-end PCE product the unit cost is higher than conventional naphthalene/melamine plasticisers, so it is best reserved for SCC and high-/ultra-high-strength work
  • Liquid admixture must be protected from frost and stored within the recommended temperature band; do not allow to freeze
  • Should be dosed into the mixing water at the batching plant, not added to dry cement, and not simply increased to chase higher slump without re-trialling

Selection & best practice

Always establish the optimum dosage by site trial within the recommended range rather than defaulting to a fixed figure — the correct dose depends on cement type, SCM content, aggregate grading and the target slump-flow or strength. Add Auramix 500 to the mixing water (or to the wet concrete during mixing) at the batching plant; never dispense it onto dry cement. For SCC, verify slump-flow, T500 and passing/segregation behaviour on trial batches before going to production, and keep the w/c ratio under control to realise the strength and durability gains. Store drums in shade within the recommended temperature band, protect from frost, keep containers sealed, and use older stock first. Confirm compatibility when changing cement source or introducing a new SCM, and consult the current Fosroc TDS and your Space Arc Engineering technical contact for project-specific guidance.

Frequently asked questions

What is Fosroc Auramix 500 used for?
It is a polycarboxylic-ether (PCE) high-performance superplasticiser used to produce self-compacting concrete, high-rise pumped concrete, and ultra-high-strength/high-performance mixes at very low water-cement ratios with long workability retention.
What is the recommended dosage of Auramix 500?
As a guide, around 0.5–2.0 kg per 100 kg of cementitious material, but the optimum dose must be fixed by site trial because it depends on the cement, SCMs, aggregates and the target slump-flow or strength. Always confirm against the current Fosroc TDS.
Does Auramix 500 contain chlorides?
No. It is supplied chloride-free, consistent with IS 456 requirements for reinforced and prestressed concrete, so it does not contribute to chloride-induced corrosion risk.
Which standards does Auramix 500 comply with?
It complies with IS 9103-1999 and, depending on dosage, with ASTM C494 Types F and G (high-range water-reducing and high-range water-reducing & retarding admixtures).
Do I still need a separate VMA for self-compacting concrete?
Auramix 500 has an inbuilt viscosity-modifying agent that stabilises SCC against bleeding and segregation, so a separate VMA is often unnecessary. For very demanding SCC, verify segregation resistance on trial batches before deciding.
Is Auramix 500 compatible with fly ash, GGBS and all cements?
It is compatible with all common cements except high-alumina cement, and works well with fly ash, GGBS and microsilica, making it suitable for high-durability and lower-carbon blended mixes.

How we position Fosroc Auramix 500

Within Fosroc’s Auramix range, the 500 grade is the high-end PCE superplasticiser for the most demanding self-compacting and ultra-high-strength work, sitting above general-purpose grades such as Auramix 200/300 and alongside the 400/450 grades; for standard structural concrete where ultra-high strength is not required, a lower Auramix grade or a Conplast superplasticiser (e.g. Conplast SP series) is often more cost-effective, and where retardation or curing is the goal, products like Fosroc’s retarders and Concure curing compounds complement rather than replace it. Credible alternative PCE superplasticisers in the Indian market include Sika ViscoCrete and Sika’s SCC admixtures, MBS/Master Builders Solutions MasterGlenium, and high-range admixtures from suppliers such as STP and Dr. Fixit (Pidilite); each has its own dosage and compatibility envelope, so cross-product substitution should always be re-trialled. Space Arc Engineering’s position is that Auramix 500 is the right specification when SCC, high-rise pumpability and ultra-high strength must be achieved together — and as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator in Delhi NCR and Pan-India, we supply genuine, batch-documented material with dosage-trial and on-site technical support so the product performs to its design intent.
