Fosroc Cebex DS
A polymer-based soil-conditioning agent for mechanised EPB tunnelling that tames groundwater in fine sands and silts, modifies excavated-muck viscosity and stabilises the working face.
What is it?
Cebex DS (and its variant Cebex DS P1) is a Fosroc polymer-based soil-conditioning admixture used with the foaming agents and bentonite injected at the cutterhead and screw conveyor of an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine. It is an anti-permeability / viscosity-modifying conditioning agent rather than a concrete or grout admixture.
Where is it used?
Mechanised tunnelling on EPB TBM drives, particularly metro, water, sewerage and utility tunnels passing through water-bearing fine sands, silts and sandy gravels, where the spoil must be turned into a stable, plastic, low-permeability paste.
Why use it?
It converts wet, free-flowing or unstable ground into a manageable plastic mass, controls groundwater inflow in fine-grained soils, reduces soil permeability and helps form the screw-conveyor plug that maintains face pressure and prevents blow-outs.
How is it applied?
Dosed as a liquid into the conditioning lines and injected through cutterhead and screw-conveyor ports together with foam and water; treatment ratio and dosage are established by site trials and adjusted in real time to ground conditions and TBM advance.
About Fosroc Cebex DS
Fosroc Cebex DS belongs to the Cebex family of construction-chemical admixtures, but it sits in a specialised corner of that range: soil conditioning for mechanised tunnelling. Unlike the better-known Cebex grout admixtures (such as Cebex 100), Cebex DS is not added to concrete or cementitious grout. It is a polymer-based conditioning agent injected, in liquid form, into the ground ahead of and around the cutterhead of an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine, working alongside foaming agents, water and sometimes bentonite to transform the excavated soil into a controllable medium. The product is also catalogued by Fosroc with a “P1” suffix (Cebex DS P1), denoting the polymer/anti-clay conditioning variant within the same DS soil-conditioning system. For Indian contractors running metro, water-supply and sewerage tunnel drives through the alluvial and coastal soils common across the Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata corridors, the practical problem Cebex DS addresses is a familiar one. Fine sands and silts below the water table behave unpredictably: they can run, they lose cohesion, and they let groundwater pass straight through the spoil, which makes it impossible to build and hold the earth pressure that an EPB machine relies on. Cebex DS tackles this by tackling water problems in ground containing fine sand or silt, reducing soil permeability and increasing the cohesion of coarser sands and sandy gravels. The result is a soil paste that resists water flow, holds together and can be reliably pressurised at the face. Because the product is part of an engineered conditioning regime rather than a stand-alone additive, it is normally specified by the tunnelling contractor’s process engineers in conjunction with Fosroc technical support, with dosages confirmed by laboratory and site trials on the actual spoil. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator covering Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering supplies Cebex DS and the wider conditioning range, and can coordinate Fosroc’s tunnelling technical team for project-specific trials, dosage optimisation and on-drive support.
The technical insight
An EPB machine excavates by balancing the pressure of the conditioned spoil inside the excavation chamber against the natural earth and water pressure of the ground outside. For that balance to work, the spoil has to behave like a soft, plastic, low-permeability paste: cohesive enough to transmit pressure uniformly, fluid enough to flow through the chamber and screw conveyor, and impermeable enough that groundwater does not migrate through it and bleed off the support pressure. Clean fine sands and silts fail on every count, which is exactly where a polymer conditioner like Cebex DS earns its place. Its strong viscosity-modifying effect turns wet, watery soil into a manageable consistency, while its anti-permeability action knits the fine particles together so the muck resists water flow. The most safety-critical function is at the screw conveyor. When injected directly into the screw conveyor it helps the formation of the plug, the column of conditioned soil in the screw that acts as a pressure seal between the pressurised chamber and atmospheric pressure at the discharge. A poor plug allows uncontrolled water and soil inrush (a blow-out); a good plug, supported by the right conditioner, lets the operator meter spoil out while holding face pressure. Polymer conditioners such as Cebex DS also create plastic deformation properties in the soil that give even and controlled support pressure and improved face stability. In practice the polymer is rarely used alone: it is one lever in a conditioning recipe alongside foam (a surfactant foaming agent expanded with air) and, in very permeable or mixed ground, bentonite. The art lies in matching polymer dosage and treatment ratio to the soil gradation and water content, which is why Fosroc and Space Arc emphasise trial-based dosage rather than fixed catalogue figures.
Where it is used
- Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM drives through water-bearing fine sands and silts
- Metro and urban rail tunnels in alluvial and coastal soils (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata)
- Water-supply, sewerage and stormwater tunnels in soft, saturated ground
- Utility and cable tunnels requiring controlled face pressure in granular soils
- Conditioning of coarse sands and sandy gravels to increase cohesion and reduce permeability
- Screw-conveyor plug formation and stabilisation to maintain chamber pressure
- Reduction of groundwater inflow and washout in fine-grained tunnelling ground
Key advantages
- Tackles groundwater problems in ground containing fine sand or silt where foam alone is insufficient
- Strong viscosity-modifying effect turns wet, unstable soil into a manageable, plastic paste
- Reduces soil permeability so the conditioned spoil resists water migration and holds support pressure
- Increases the cohesion of coarser sands and sandy gravels
- Aids formation and stability of the screw-conveyor plug, reducing blow-out risk
- Creates plastic deformation properties for even, controlled face support pressure
- Liquid form integrates with standard TBM conditioning injection lines and dosing systems
- Part of an engineered Fosroc conditioning system with technical support for trials and dosage optimisation
Limitations & considerations
- Specialised tunnelling product only — it is NOT a concrete, mortar or grout admixture and must not be confused with Cebex grout admixtures such as Cebex 100
- Performance depends on correct dosage and treatment ratio, which must be established by laboratory and site trials on the actual soil
- Generally used as part of a conditioning regime with foaming agents (and sometimes bentonite), not as a stand-alone additive
- Effectiveness varies with soil gradation, fines content and groundwater conditions; results in clean gravels or stiff clays differ from fine sands/silts
- Requires trained TBM crew and proper injection/dosing equipment for consistent results
- Detailed numerical data (specific gravity, exact dosage, pack sizes) are not published openly by Fosroc and should be confirmed from the region-specific TDS and SDS before specification
- Handling and spoil disposal must follow the product Safety Data Sheet and local environmental rules for surfactant/polymer-treated muck
Selection & best practice
Treat Cebex DS as one component of an engineered soil-conditioning regime, not a fixed-dose additive. Before the drive, run laboratory conditioning trials on representative spoil to set the polymer dosage, foam parameters and treatment ratio for each expected geology, then validate and fine-tune on the machine during the first rings. Inject through the correct cutterhead and screw-conveyor ports, monitor plug stability and chamber pressure continuously, and adjust polymer dosage as the ground changes. Always work from the current region-specific Fosroc Technical Data Sheet and Safety Data Sheet, store the product as directed, and involve Fosroc/Space Arc technical support for trials and on-drive optimisation. Verify all numeric values (SG, dosage, pack size, shelf life) against the official TDS for your country before issuing a method statement.

How we position Fosroc Cebex DS
Within Fosroc’s portfolio, Cebex DS is a niche tunnelling product and should not be cross-sold against, or confused with, the Cebex grout admixtures (for example Cebex 100, the plasticised expanding grout admixture) or general concrete admixtures such as the Conplast and Auramix/Structuro ranges — those belong to entirely different applications. The natural companions to Cebex DS are the other components of an EPB conditioning regime: Fosroc’s tunnelling foaming agents and polymer/anti-clay conditioners, used together with bentonite. Against the wider market, the closest credible alternatives are the dedicated tunnelling-chemical lines from specialist suppliers — notably MasterRoc/Meyco from MBS (Master Builders Solutions), Sika’s tunnelling soil-conditioning agents, Normet’s TBM soil-conditioning foams and polymers, and Mapei’s UTT (Underground Technology Team) conditioners. These are the genuine head-to-head products; mainstream Indian waterproofing brands such as Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and STP do not field equivalent TBM soil conditioners, so they are not realistic substitutes here. For Indian metro, water and utility tunnelling projects, the decisive factors are soil-specific trial support, consistent product supply to the drive and responsive technical service — areas where Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, can pair Cebex DS with full Fosroc tunnelling technical backup.
