Fosroc Conplast SP590
Chloride-free, synthetic-polymer super plasticising admixture for high-strength, low water:cement and flowing concrete.
What is it?
Fosroc Conplast SP590 is a chloride-free, high-range water-reducing (superplasticising) concrete admixture based on selected synthetic polymers, supplied as a brown liquid that instantly disperses in water.
Where is it used?
Ready-mix and site-batched structural concrete, precast and prestressed elements, high-strength columns and rafts, pumped and flowing concrete, and silica-fume / fly-ash / GGBS blended mixes across India.
Why use it?
It lets you cut the water:cement ratio sharply to gain strength and durability, or convert that water reduction into high workability and self-levelling flow without adding extra cement or water.
How is it applied?
Dosed by calibrated dispenser as a percentage of cementitious content, added with the mixing water (or into the truck drum for late workability), with the optimum rate fixed by trial mixes on the actual job materials.
About Fosroc Conplast SP590
Fosroc Conplast SP590 is a high-range water-reducing admixture, the technical name for a superplasticiser, drawn from Fosroc’s well-established Conplast SP family of concrete admixtures. It is described by Fosroc as a chloride-free product based on selected synthetic polymers, supplied as a brown solution that disperses instantly in the gauging water. Where a normal plasticiser merely lubricates a mix, a superplasticiser like SP590 works by adsorbing onto cement grains and dispersing the fine particles that would otherwise clump together. Freeing that trapped water means the same workability can be reached with far less mixing water, and it is this large water reduction that delivers SP590’s headline benefits: higher strength at every age, a denser and less permeable matrix, and better long-term durability. In Indian practice that durability angle matters as much as strength, because lower permeability is the front line of defence against chloride ingress in coastal and marine structures, sulphate attack in aggressive soils, and carbonation in urban exposure. SP590 is positioned for two distinct jobs that share the same chemistry. The first is producing genuinely high-strength, water-reduced concrete (M40 and above, and high-performance mixes using microsilica or fly ash) where the priority is squeezing the water:cement ratio down. The second is producing flowing, easily pumped, easily compacted concrete on congested or heavily reinforced sections, where the same admixture is instead used to lift slump and improve cohesion without adding water. Because it is chloride-free, Fosroc confirms it is safe for prestressed and reinforced concrete, including post-tensioned and precast work where chloride-bearing accelerators are strictly prohibited. Space Arc Engineering supplies Conplast SP590 as an authorised Fosroc distributor across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, alongside the wider Conplast admixture range and on-site technical support for trial mixes.
The technical insight
The performance of Conplast SP590 comes from steric and electrostatic dispersion of cement particles rather than simple air-lubrication, which is why it can reach very low water:cement ratios while keeping the mix cohesive. Fosroc states it maintains increased workability for longer than ordinary sulphonated melamine admixtures and improves cohesion and particle dispersion, which suppresses bleeding and segregation and lifts pumpability. A practical caution flagged by Fosroc for this product family is alkali contribution: where alkali-reactive (ASR-susceptible) aggregate must be used, a superplasticiser can add an undesirable level of alkali to the mix, so the alkali budget should be checked. As with all high-range water reducers, doubling the intended dose typically increases retardation and can raise entrained air, so dosage should be set by trial mix on the actual cement, aggregate and ambient conditions rather than carried over from another job. Note that Fosroc gates the full numeric data sheet (exact specific gravity, dosage band and air-entrainment figure) behind country-specific downloads; verified spec values below are limited to what Fosroc publishes openly, and the project-specific data sheet should be obtained from Space Arc before mix design is finalised.
Where it is used
- High-strength structural concrete (M40 and above) where a low water:cement ratio is the controlling requirement
- Flowing, self-compacting-style concrete for heavily reinforced columns, shear walls, rafts and transfer slabs
- Pumped concrete for high-rise and long-distance placement requiring sustained workability and cohesion
- Precast and prestressed concrete elements needing early stripping strength without chloride-bearing accelerators
- High-performance and blended mixes incorporating microsilica, fly ash (PFA) or GGBS
- Water-reduced durable concrete for marine, coastal and sulphate-exposed structures where low permeability is critical
- Ready-mix concrete plants standardising on a chloride-free superplasticiser for reinforced and prestressed supply
Key advantages
- Chloride-free, confirmed safe for prestressed and reinforced concrete
- Enables major water:cement reductions for high strength without raising cement content
- Produces flowing concrete for faster placing and compaction with reduced labour
- Holds workability longer than ordinary sulphonated melamine admixtures
- Improves cohesion and particle dispersion, minimising segregation and bleeding
- Improves pumpability for high-rise and long-line placement
- Compatible with microsilica, fly ash and GGBS blended cementitious systems
- Denser, less permeable concrete for better long-term durability
Limitations & considerations
- Optimum dosage must be established by trial mix; values cannot be carried over from another project or sister product
- Overdosing (roughly double the intended dose) typically increases retardation and can raise entrained air, reducing strength
- With alkali-reactive (ASR) aggregate it may add an undesirable level of alkali to the mix
- Full numeric data sheet (exact specific gravity, dosage band, air content) is gated behind Fosroc country-specific downloads and should be obtained per project
- As a synthetic-polymer superplasticiser it is not a waterproofing or corrosion-inhibiting admixture; those functions need separate Fosroc products
- Storage outside the recommended temperature range can affect the liquid and should be checked against the local TDS
- High initial workability without a matching water reduction risks segregation if the mix is not redesigned
Selection & best practice
Always fix the SP590 dose by trial mix on the actual job cement, aggregates and site temperature, not from a generic figure. Decide upfront whether the target is water reduction (for strength) or workability (for flow) and design the base mix accordingly, then add the admixture with the gauging water via a calibrated dispenser; for late workability it can be added into the readymix truck drum and mixed at high speed for at least two minutes. Add it separately from any other admixture, never pre-blended. Check the alkali budget if reactive aggregate is unavoidable, maintain proper curing, and obtain the current country-specific data sheet and SDS from Space Arc Engineering before finalising the mix design.

How we position Fosroc Conplast SP590
Within Fosroc’s range, Conplast SP590 sits as a synthetic-polymer superplasticiser alongside the naphthalene-based Conplast SP430 (high early strength) and the broader Conplast SP / Auramix lines; specifiers wanting workability retention or self-compacting performance should also evaluate Fosroc’s polycarboxylate-ether (PCE) Auramix range, while integral waterproofing or corrosion control needs separate products such as Conplast WP or Fosroc’s corrosion inhibitors. Against competitors, SP590 competes with Sika’s superplasticiser range (e.g. Sika ViscoCrete / Sikament), BASF Master Builders Solutions (MasterGlenium PCE and the older Rheobuild SNF lines), and naphthalene/PCE admixtures from STP, Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and similar Indian suppliers. Honest guidance: for the lowest water:cement ratios, longest slump retention and self-compacting concrete, a modern PCE admixture (Fosroc Auramix or a PCE from Sika/MBS) usually outperforms an SNF/synthetic-polymer product like SP590; SP590’s strengths are reliable high water reduction, proven cohesion and a chloride-free formulation that is dependable for prestressed and reinforced supply. Space Arc Engineering supplies the full Fosroc admixture range and can advise objectively on whether SP590, an Auramix PCE or another product best fits the specification, exposure class and budget.
