Fosroc Conplast X400
Chloride-free integral waterproofing admixture with a plasticising effect for water-retaining and water-contact concrete
What is it?
A chloride-free liquid waterproofing admixture, based on a blend of lignosulphonates and synthetic polymers, that is dosed into the concrete or mortar mix to reduce permeability while giving a light plasticising (water-reducing) effect.
Where is it used?
Water-retaining and water-contact structures: sewage treatment works, channels, power-plant basins, reservoirs, water pipes and tanks, basement and retaining walls, and any concrete or mortar that must resist water penetration.
Why use it?
It converts open capillary porosity into closed porosity, lowering water absorption and the risk of shrinkage cracking, while the plasticising action improves workability and can marginally raise final compressive strength without adding chlorides that corrode steel.
How is it applied?
Added to the gauging water or the wet mix at the batching stage at 0.1-0.5% by weight of cement, then mixed thoroughly to disperse uniformly before placing and compacting as normal concrete.
About Fosroc Conplast X400
Fosroc Conplast X400 is an integral waterproofing admixture engineered for concrete and mortar that will be in permanent or intermittent contact with water. Unlike surface-applied membranes or coatings, an integral admixture is mixed into the concrete itself, so the waterproofing performance is built into the body of the element rather than relying on a skin that can be punctured, abraded or debonded. Conplast X400 belongs to Fosroc’s well-established Conplast range of concrete admixtures and is formulated as a chloride-free blend of lignosulphonates and synthetic polymers, supplied as a ready-to-use liquid.\n\nThe product works on two fronts. First, the lignosulphonate component acts as a water-reducing plasticiser: at a given workability the mix can be designed with a lower water-to-cement ratio, and a denser, lower-permeability matrix is the single most reliable route to durable, watertight concrete. Second, the synthetic-polymer fraction promotes the conversion of open, interconnected capillary pores into discontinuous closed pores, which interrupts the capillary paths that water uses to travel through hardened concrete. The combined effect is reduced water absorption and reduced permeability, together with lower drying shrinkage and a correspondingly reduced risk of shrinkage cracking. Because the formulation is chloride-free, it is safe for use in reinforced and prestressed concrete where chloride-induced corrosion of steel is a primary durability concern.\n\nFor Indian projects, Conplast X400 fits naturally into the same workflow contractors already use for water-retaining structures: sewage and effluent treatment plants, irrigation channels, power-station water systems, overhead and underground tanks, basements and retaining walls. Space Arc Engineering supplies the product as an authorised Fosroc distributor across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with technical support on dosage trials, mix design and site practice so that the admixture is used correctly rather than simply poured in.
The technical insight
Integral waterproofing admixtures are sometimes oversold as a stand-alone cure for leaking concrete, so it is worth being precise about what Conplast X400 actually does. Its chemistry attacks permeability through the matrix: the plasticising action allows a lower water/cement ratio (the dominant variable for permeability), and the polymer fraction shifts pore structure from open to closed capillaries, cutting capillary suction and water absorption. What it does not do is bridge cracks, fill construction joints, or seal honeycombing and tie-holes. Concrete in service leaks far more often through discrete defects – shrinkage and structural cracks, cold joints, poorly detailed kickers and penetrations – than through sound, well-compacted concrete. The correct mental model is therefore a hierarchy: get the concrete right (low w/c, good grading, proper cover, thorough compaction and curing), let Conplast X400 densify the matrix and improve workability so that low w/c is achievable on site, and then treat joints, cracks and penetrations separately with waterstops, joint sealants and crack-injection systems. Used this way the admixture earns its place; used as a substitute for sound detailing and workmanship it will disappoint. Always run a site trial at the intended dosage with the actual cement and aggregates, because lignosulphonate-based admixtures can show modest set retardation and air entrainment that vary with cement chemistry and ambient temperature.
Where it is used
- Sewage and effluent treatment plants – aeration tanks, clarifiers, channels and chambers in constant contact with liquid
- Water-retaining structures – overhead and underground water tanks, reservoirs and sumps
- Irrigation and hydraulic works – canals, channels and lined waterways
- Power-plant water systems – cooling-water basins, intake and discharge structures
- Below-ground concrete – basement rafts and walls, retaining walls and lift pits subject to ground-water pressure
- Precast and cast-in-situ water pipes and culverts
- Plastering and masonry mortars where reduced water absorption and improved workability are required
Key advantages
- Chloride-free formulation – safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete, avoids chloride-induced steel corrosion
- Reduces concrete permeability and water absorption by promoting closed capillary porosity
- Light plasticising effect improves workability and allows a lower water/cement ratio for denser concrete
- Lower drying shrinkage and reduced risk of shrinkage cracking
- Can marginally increase the final compressive strength of concrete or mortar
- Integral protection built into the concrete body – not a surface layer that can be damaged or debond
- Ready-to-use liquid, simply added at the batching stage with no special equipment
- Suitable for both concrete and mortar across a wide range of water-contact applications
Limitations & considerations
- Densifies the matrix only – it does not bridge or seal cracks, construction joints, honeycombing or tie-holes, which need separate treatment
- Not a replacement for waterstops, joint sealants or external membranes where positive water pressure acts on joints
- Performance depends on a well-designed, low-w/c, properly compacted and cured mix; poor workmanship will undermine the benefit
- As a lignosulphonate-based admixture it can cause slight set retardation and air entrainment that vary with cement and temperature, so site trials are essential
- Overdosing beyond the recommended 0.1-0.5% by weight of cement can lead to excessive retardation or bleeding
- Provides limited protection against aggressive chemical attack on its own – severe sewage or chemical exposure may require additional protective coatings or sulphate-resisting cement
- Compatibility with other admixtures must be checked; do not premix different admixtures together before adding to the mix
Selection & best practice
Always establish the optimum dosage with a site trial using the project’s actual cement, aggregates and ambient conditions, starting within the 0.1-0.5% by weight of cement range. Add Conplast X400 to the gauging water or to the wet mix – never to the dry cement – and mix thoroughly to ensure uniform dispersion. Keep the water/cement ratio as low as the required workability allows; the admixture’s plasticising effect is what makes a low w/c practical, and low w/c is what actually delivers watertightness. Maintain good aggregate grading, full compaction and a disciplined curing regime (moist curing for at least seven days) to develop the closed pore structure. Treat all construction joints with waterstops, seal movement joints with an appropriate Fosroc sealant, and address any cracks by injection rather than expecting the admixture to heal them. Do not mix Conplast X400 directly with other admixtures before batching; dose each separately. Store containers sealed in a dry place between 2C and 40C and use within the stated shelf life.

How we position Fosroc Conplast X400
Within the Fosroc Conplast range, Conplast X400 is the integral waterproofing admixture for water-contact and water-retaining concrete, sitting alongside related options such as Conplast WP200 / WP400 (integral waterproofing/plasticising admixtures) and Conplast Crystalline (crystalline waterproofing technology) for new construction. For a full waterproofing solution it should be paired – not replaced – with Fosroc joint and crack products: Supercast or Fosroc PVC waterstops at construction joints, Nitoseal/Colpor joint sealants at movement joints, and Nitomortar or Conbextra for repairs. Where surface protection is needed, an external membrane such as Brushbond or Proofex complements the integral approach. Compared with competing brands available in India, Conplast X400 competes with Sika’s integral waterproofing admixtures (Sika WT / Plastocrete range), MasterLife and MasterPel integral systems from MBS/Master Builders Solutions, Dr. Fixit’s LW+ and integral crystalline products, and STP’s integral waterproofing admixtures. The honest positioning is that all these integral admixtures share the same fundamental limitation – they densify the matrix but do not seal joints or cracks – so selection should be driven by verified dosage performance, local technical support and a complete system that addresses joints and detailing, rather than by waterproofing claims for the admixture alone. Space Arc Engineering supplies Conplast X400 and the supporting Fosroc system across Delhi NCR and Pan-India with dosage-trial and mix-design support.
