Fosroc Structuro 420
A high-performance cohesion agent that gives self-compacting concrete the stability to flow without segregating, bleeding or sedimenting.
What is it?
Structuro 420 is a Fosroc cohesion agent, a viscosity-modifying admixture (VMA) that controls the consistency and stability of highly fluid concrete, particularly self-compacting concrete (SCC).
Where is it used?
On SCC pours across India: congested RCC, architectural fair-face elements, raft and column-beam junctions, precast yards and pumped concrete where vibration is impractical.
Why use it?
It stops a high-fluidity mix from segregating, bleeding and sedimenting, so coarse aggregate stays suspended and the mix self-levels and self-compacts under its own weight without vibration.
How is it applied?
Dosed at the batching plant or transit mixer as part of the SCC admixture system, normally alongside a Structuro/Auramix polycarboxylate superplasticiser, then trial-optimised against slump-flow targets.
About Fosroc Structuro 420
Fosroc Structuro 420 is part of Fosroc’s Structuro range of admixtures for high-performance and self-compacting concrete. Officially described by Fosroc as a “high performance cohesion agent specially designed to ensure good consistency and stability in concrete with very high fluidity,” it is not a water reducer in the conventional sense — it is a viscosity-modifying admixture (VMA), often called a cohesion or anti-segregation agent. Where a superplasticiser makes concrete flow, a cohesion agent like Structuro 420 governs how that flowing concrete behaves: it thickens the paste phase just enough to hold the mix together so it does not separate into a soup of cement-rich liquid on top and stranded coarse aggregate below.\n\nSelf-compacting concrete is a balancing act. To achieve slump-flow of 600 to 750 mm and fill heavily congested formwork by gravity, the mix is pushed to extreme fluidity with a high-range water reducer. At that fluidity the mix is naturally prone to bleeding (water rising to the surface), segregation (heavy aggregate sinking) and sedimentation. Structuro 420 is dosed specifically to counter this. The official product literature states it delivers excellent stability and opposes sweating, segregation and sedimentation, producing concrete that can be poured and placed by gravity — avoiding the need for vibration — and that yields a high-quality fair-face finish without the defects associated with mechanical compaction.\n\nFor Indian sites, this matters most on architectural and structurally complex work. In Delhi NCR high-rise cores, transfer beams, heavily reinforced columns, basement rafts and precast architectural panels, mechanical vibration is either physically difficult or risks honeycombing and cold joints. A robust, well-dosed SCC built around a cohesion agent lets contractors place dense, void-free concrete in a single continuous pour. Structuro 420 is the stability half of that recipe — used together with a polycarboxylate-ether superplasticiser (the fluidity half) and an appropriate powder/fines content in the mix design. As an authorised Fosroc distributor, Space Arc Engineering supplies Structuro 420 alongside the matched superplasticiser and full mix-design support so the SCC performs as a system rather than a single bottle.
The technical insight
A cohesion agent works on the rheology of the paste, not the water demand. Fresh concrete behaves as a Bingham fluid with two governing parameters: yield stress (the force needed to start it flowing) and plastic viscosity (its resistance once moving). A superplasticiser drops yield stress so the mix flows freely; left alone at that point the low viscosity lets coarse aggregate settle out. Structuro 420 raises and stabilises the plastic viscosity of the paste — increasing its capacity to suspend solids and bind free water — without dragging yield stress back up and killing the flow. The result is a mix that is simultaneously highly fluid and highly cohesive, which is exactly the window SCC needs. This also widens the mix’s robustness: small, real-world swings in sand moisture, fines content or batching water knock an unmodified SCC out of spec far more easily than one carrying a cohesion agent. Because the agent suppresses bleed channels and reduces sedimentation, the hardened concrete typically shows a more uniform, denser microstructure with fewer settlement voids beneath aggregate and reinforcement — which feeds directly into better surface finish and durability.
Where it is used
- Self-compacting concrete (SCC) for heavily reinforced columns, shear walls and transfer/transfer beams
- Architectural fair-face and exposed-concrete elements where vibration marks and honeycombing are unacceptable
- Deep, congested basement rafts and pile caps placed by gravity in a single continuous pour
- Precast and prestressed yard production of panels, facades and complex-geometry units
- Pumped concrete over long horizontal or vertical distances where mix stability must be maintained
- High-fines or high-fluidity mixes prone to bleeding and segregation that need rheology control
- Repair and infill pours into restricted-access formwork where mechanical compaction is impractical
Key advantages
- Controls segregation, bleeding and sedimentation in very high-fluidity and self-compacting mixes
- Enables placement by gravity with no vibration, cutting labour, plant and noise on site
- Produces dense, void-free fair-face surfaces without honeycombing or vibration marks
- Improves mix robustness against everyday variation in sand moisture and fines content
- Helps keep coarse aggregate uniformly suspended for consistent strength through the section
- Complements Fosroc Structuro / Auramix superplasticisers as a designed two-part SCC system
- Backed in India by Fosroc technical service and local distributor support for trial mixes
Limitations & considerations
- It is a cohesion/viscosity agent, not a superplasticiser — it does not by itself create flow or reduce water; it must be paired with a high-range water reducer
- Over-dosing raises viscosity and can make the mix sticky, reducing slump-flow and pumpability
- Performance is mix-design dependent — fines content, sand grading, w/c ratio and cement type all interact, so site trial mixes are essential
- Numeric properties (specific gravity, dosage, chloride content) are published by Fosroc only in the country-specific datasheet; the public product page does not list them, so always confirm against the current local TDS
- Not a substitute for sound formwork, reinforcement detailing or curing — it manages fresh-state stability only
- Like most liquid admixtures it should be protected from freezing and used within its stated shelf life
Selection & best practice
Treat Structuro 420 as one half of a designed SCC system, never as a drop-in additive. Start from a proper SCC mix design with adequate powder/fines content, then dose the matched Fosroc superplasticiser for the target slump-flow and add Structuro 420 to lock in stability. Always run laboratory and site trial mixes assessing slump-flow, T500 time, V-funnel and a visual stability/segregation check before production. Add the cohesion agent and superplasticiser in line with the current country-specific Fosroc datasheet and never blind-extrapolate dosage from a sister product. Account for sand moisture daily, keep batching water tightly controlled, and store the product in shade, protected from frost, in sealed containers. Confirm exact dosage, specific gravity, chloride class and compatibility for your job with Space Arc Engineering’s technical team against the live TDS.

How we position Fosroc Structuro 420
Within the Fosroc range, Structuro 420 is the stability/cohesion partner to the company’s fluidity products: it is designed to be used with Structuro and Auramix polycarboxylate-ether superplasticisers (such as the Structuro 300/500 series and Auramix high-range water reducers), and complements rather than competes with Fosroc’s dedicated viscosity modulators like Auramix V200. Buyers choosing an SCC admixture package will usually weigh it against equivalent viscosity-modifying / anti-segregation admixtures from Sika (Sika-Stabilizer and the SikaViscoCrete system), Master Builders Solutions / BASF (MasterMatrix VMA range), STP and Dr. Fixit’s segregation-control products. Honestly assessed, no VMA is universally “best” — the deciding factor is which agent, at what dosage, gives a stable, robust slump-flow with the actual cement, sand and fly ash on your project. The strongest reason to specify Structuro 420 is system integrity: pairing it with Fosroc’s own superplasticiser removes admixture-compatibility risk and gives you a single technical chain. Space Arc Engineering positions it for Delhi NCR and Pan-India SCC work where fair-face quality and dense, vibration-free placement are non-negotiable, and backs it with trial-mix and datasheet support rather than selling it as a standalone fix.
