Fosroc Structuro 520R
A strong carboxylic-ether (PCE) hyperplasticiser engineered for high-performance and high-workability concrete with consistent properties around the design dosage.
What is it?
Fosroc Structuro 520R is a high-range water-reducing concrete admixture (hyperplasticiser) based on a unique carboxylic ether polymer with long lateral chains. It disperses cement far more effectively than conventional naphthalene or melamine superplasticisers.
Where is it used?
Used at the batching plant or site in ready-mix and precast concrete, high-strength structural concrete, flowable and self-compacting mixes, and durability-critical works across building, infrastructure and water-retaining structures.
Why use it?
It delivers strong water reduction while retaining workability, raising early and ultimate strength, lowering permeability and improving durability without compromising slump life around the design dose.
How is it applied?
Dosed as a liquid into the gauge water or added to the mix at the plant, then mixed thoroughly. Optimum dosage is established by site trials with the actual cement, aggregates and target performance; it is not applied to hardened concrete.
About Fosroc Structuro 520R
Fosroc Structuro 520R belongs to Fosroc’s Structuro family of next-generation superplasticisers built on polycarboxylic ether (PCE) chemistry. Unlike older sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde (SNF) or melamine-based plasticisers that disperse cement mainly through electrostatic repulsion, Structuro 520R is based on a unique carboxylic ether polymer with long lateral chains grafted onto the polymer backbone. This molecular architecture combines an electrostatic charge with steric (physical) hindrance, so cement grains are held apart by the protruding side chains as well as by surface charge. The result is dramatically more efficient cement dispersion at a lower dose, which is why Fosroc describes 520R as a particularly strong hyperplasticiser capable of producing consistent concrete properties around the required dosage. For a construction-chemicals buyer in India, Structuro 520R sits at the high-performance end of the admixture shelf: it is the product specifiers reach for when the brief calls for genuinely high strength, very high workability, or both at once, rather than a routine workability boost. In practice it allows the concrete technologist to either pull water out of the mix to chase strength and durability, or to open up the mix into a flowing, easily-placed concrete, or to balance the two. Because the dispersion mechanism is robust, the mix behaves predictably as the dose is fine-tuned, which matters on real Indian sites where cement sources, fly ash or GGBS replacement levels and aggregate grading all vary batch to batch. Space Arc Engineering supplies Fosroc Structuro 520R as an authorised distributor across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, supporting ready-mix plants, precast yards and project contractors with material, trial support and technical documentation.
The technical insight
The performance of Structuro 520R comes from its comb-shaped polymer. A carboxylic-acid backbone anchors onto the positively-charged surfaces of hydrating cement particles, while long polyethylene-oxide lateral chains project outward into the pore solution. Two things then happen simultaneously: the carboxyl groups impart a negative charge that pushes neighbouring particles apart (electrostatic dispersion), and the bulky side chains physically wedge between particles so they cannot re-flocculate (steric hindrance). Steric hindrance is the key advantage over SNF/melamine chemistry, which relies on charge alone and loses effect quickly. By keeping cement de-flocculated, the water normally trapped inside flocs is freed to lubricate the mix, so the same workability is achieved at a much lower water-cement ratio. A lower w/c ratio is the single most powerful lever for concrete quality, and it is the mechanistic reason behind every benefit Fosroc lists for 520R: higher early and ultimate compressive strength, higher flexural strength, lower permeability, better carbonation resistance, improved bond to reinforcing and stressing steel, reduced shrinkage and creep, and greater durability in aggressive environments. The same chemistry also improves cohesion and reduces bleed in well-designed flowing mixes, which is why PCE hyperplasticisers like 520R underpin self-compacting and high-performance concrete. Because PCE response is cement-specific and sensitive to fines, clay content in sand and SCM type, the dosage and slump-retention behaviour must always be confirmed by trial rather than assumed from another mix.
Where it is used
- High-strength structural concrete (columns, transfer girders, cores) where a low water-cement ratio is needed to hit M50 and above
- High-workability and flowing concrete for heavily congested reinforcement, deep beams and raft foundations
- Ready-mix concrete requiring consistent slump and strength across multiple loads
- Precast and prestressed elements demanding high early strength for faster demoulding and stressing
- Self-compacting and self-levelling concrete formulations (in conjunction with appropriate mix design and viscosity control)
- Durability-critical and water-retaining structures (tanks, basements, marine and coastal works) where low permeability is specified
- Infrastructure concrete such as bridges, flyovers and industrial structures exposed to aggressive atmospheric conditions
- Pumped concrete over long distances or to height, where reliable workability retention reduces blockages
Key advantages
- Strong water reduction at low dosage thanks to combined electrostatic and steric dispersion of cement
- Increased early and ultimate compressive strength, enabling higher grades and faster construction cycles
- Increased flexural strength for slabs, pavements and structural members
- Lower permeability and improved carbonation resistance for longer service life
- Improved adhesion to reinforcing and prestressing steel, supporting structural integrity
- Reduced drying shrinkage and creep, lowering cracking risk
- Greater durability in aggressive atmospheric and exposure conditions
- Consistent, predictable concrete properties around the design dose, simplifying plant quality control
Limitations & considerations
- PCE response is highly cement- and SCM-specific; dosage and slump retention must be established by site trial, not copied from another mix
- Overdosing can cause excessive retardation, bleeding or segregation, so dispensing must be controlled accurately
- Sensitive to clay and excess fines in sand, which can sharply reduce efficiency and demand higher dosage
- As a strong hyperplasticiser it can produce very high slump quickly; mix cohesion and stability need attention, especially for flowing/SCC mixes
- It is a workability and water-reduction admixture, not an air-entrainer, accelerator or set retarder; combine with the right Fosroc product where those effects are needed
- Compatibility with other admixtures (especially other plasticisers) should be verified before combining in one mix
- Numeric properties such as specific gravity, exact dosage range and packaging must be confirmed against the current local Fosroc TDS for the supplied grade
- Performance depends on correct mix design and good site practice; the admixture cannot compensate for poor aggregates or curing
Selection & best practice
Always establish the optimum dosage of Structuro 520R by laboratory and site trials using the project’s actual cement, supplementary cementitious materials (fly ash/GGBS), sand and coarse aggregate, targeting the required workability and strength rather than a guessed dose. Add the admixture into the gauge water or with the final mixing water at the plant and mix thoroughly to disperse it evenly; avoid adding it to dry cement alone. Keep water-cement ratio under tight control and adjust it down to capture the strength and durability gains the admixture makes possible. Calibrate dispensers and verify them periodically so the design dose is delivered accurately load after load. Where high workability retention or extended haul time is required, confirm slump-life behaviour by trial, since this is cement-dependent. Do not combine with another superplasticiser without checking compatibility, and use a dedicated retarder or accelerator from the Fosroc range if setting time needs adjustment. Store containers in cool, shaded, frost-free conditions, keep them sealed to prevent contamination, and refer to the current local Technical Data Sheet and Safety Data Sheet for the supplied grade for verified dosage, specific gravity, packaging and shelf-life figures.

How we position Fosroc Structuro 520R
Structuro 520R is Fosroc’s strong PCE-based hyperplasticiser, positioned above standard superplasticisers for genuinely high-strength and high-workability concrete. Within the Fosroc range it is a step up from chloride-free SNF-type plasticisers such as Conplast SP430 and overlaps with the high-performance Auramix admixture series (e.g. Auramix 300/400) and other Structuro grades like Structuro 520 and 505; the right choice depends on the target grade, slump-retention need and mix design, which Space Arc can advise on. Against competitor PCE products it is comparable to Sika ViscoCrete and Master Builders Solutions (MBS) MasterGlenium high-range water reducers; for general waterproofing-led admixture lines, brands such as Dr. Fixit and STP (Pidilite/STP) serve adjacent needs but Structuro 520R is specifically a structural high-performance water-reducer rather than a waterproofing additive. Space Arc Engineering recommends selecting the admixture on verified TDS data and site trials rather than brand alone, and supplies genuine Fosroc material with technical backing across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
