Spray-applied, mouldable cementitious theming mortar for artificial rock, stone-effect and decorative concrete finishes — indoors and outdoors.

BrandFosrocCategoryConcrete RepairFormA factory-blended dry-powder cementitious theming mortar from Fosroc’s Renderoc concrete-repair and rehabilitation…

What is it?

A factory-blended dry-powder cementitious theming mortar from Fosroc’s Renderoc concrete-repair and rehabilitation range. Mixed on site with clean water, it produces a workable, highly mouldable mortar that can be sprayed, hand-applied, carved and stamped to create artificial rock, stone, bark and other architectural theming finishes.

Where is it used?

Themed landscaping and hardscaping, zoos and aquariums, water parks and resorts, theme parks, tunnel and underpass portals, retaining-wall facing, and decorative rehabilitation of concrete structures where a natural rock or stone appearance is required.

Why use it?

It combines genuine cementitious durability and strong adhesion with an unusually long open working window for sculpting, so artisans can build up thickness, carve texture and stamp detail before the mortar sets — giving a hard, weather-resistant finish suitable for both interior and exterior exposure.

How is it applied?

Apply a Renderoc Tema BS undercoat/scratch coat to a sound, prepared, saturated-surface-dry substrate, then spray or trowel Renderoc Tema in build-up layers. Sculpt, carve and stamp while plastic, then cure and finish with stains/sealers as specified. Always work to the current local Fosroc TDS.

About Fosroc Renderoc Tema

Fosroc Renderoc Tema sits in a specialised corner of the Renderoc family. Where the better-known members of that range — Renderoc HB, GP, S, FC — are engineered primarily to repair and reinstate structural concrete, Renderoc Tema is a “theming” mortar: its job is to recreate the look and texture of natural rock, boulders, stone strata, bark and other organic forms on what is, underneath, an ordinary concrete or masonry substrate. Fosroc describes it as “a blend of dry powders which requires only the site addition of clean water to produce a theming mortar with a high capacity to be moulded and stamped.” That single sentence captures its purpose: it is supplied as a single-component bagged powder, gauged on site with clean water alone, and the entire value of the product lies in how readily the wet mortar can be shaped by hand and tool before it hardens. In Indian practice this is the material behind the artificial rockwork at zoos, the cave-like grottoes at water parks and resorts, the boulder-clad retaining walls along expressways, and the stone-textured portals of tunnels and underpasses — surfaces that must read as natural geology but behave like durable cementitious render. Renderoc Tema is almost always used as a system with its companion product, Renderoc Tema BS, a cementitious plastering/scratch-coat mortar that is sprayed on first as the undercoat or “build-up” layer onto which the theming coat is worked. Together they let a steel-and-concrete armature be transformed into convincing, hard-wearing artificial terrain. Because it is a Fosroc product, the binder chemistry, polymer modification and aggregate grading are factory-controlled for consistent adhesion, hardness and workability batch to batch — a meaningful advantage over site-batched sand-cement renders that vary with the mason and the day. For Space Arc Engineering’s clients across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Renderoc Tema is the right specification when the brief calls for a genuinely sculpted, natural-rock aesthetic that has to survive monsoon, UV and public handling, rather than a flat protective coating or a structural patch repair.

The technical insight

Renderoc Tema is best understood as a polymer-modified, single-component cementitious mortar whose grading and rheology have been tuned for sculptability rather than for the high early strength of a structural repair mortar. The defining performance trait is its long open/working time: the mortar must stay plastic long enough for an applicator to build up thickness, carve strata, press in moulds and stamp texture across a sizeable surface area, yet still cure to a hard, abrasion- and weather-resistant finish. Its reported fresh wet density of around 1.70 kg/l is notably lower than the ~2.0–2.2 kg/l of dense structural repair mortars; this lighter, more “buttery” body is what makes it easy to mould and lets it hold shape on vertical and overhead armatures without slumping. Adhesion is engineered to be high so that thick, sculpted build-ups stay keyed to the Renderoc Tema BS undercoat and the substrate beneath. Because the system is cement-based, it remains alkaline and breathable, tolerates both interior and exterior exposure, and accepts mineral stains and pigmented sealers for realistic colouring. The trade-off versus a structural Renderoc grade is that Tema is formulated for appearance, mouldability and a tough decorative skin — it is not a load-bearing or structural-reinstatement material, and the structural integrity of any artificial-rock build comes from the steel/mesh armature and concrete core behind it, not from the theming mortar itself.

Where it is used

  • Artificial rock and boulder formations for zoos, safari parks and wildlife enclosures
  • Themed grottoes, caves, waterfalls and water features at water parks, resorts and hotels
  • Stone-effect and bark-effect finishes on theme-park rides, sets and props
  • Decorative rockwork facing to retaining walls, slopes and landscape berms
  • Stone-textured portals, headwalls and linings for tunnels and underpasses
  • Themed cladding for commercial entrances, malls, clubhouses and amenity areas
  • Rehabilitation and aesthetic upgrade of plain concrete walls into natural-rock finishes
  • Sculpted hardscape elements — planters, seating boulders, signage rocks — in landscaping projects

Key advantages

  • Excellent adhesion to properly prepared concrete and masonry substrates, allowing thick sculpted build-ups
  • Significant hardness once cured, giving a durable, abrasion- and weather-resistant decorative skin
  • High mouldability and stampability — can be carved, textured and stamped while plastic for realistic rock and stone detail
  • Applicable in a wide range of thicknesses, from thin texture coats to deeper sculpted sections
  • Suitable for both interior and exterior use, including UV and monsoon-exposed Indian conditions
  • Single-component, dry-powder supply — only clean site water is added, simplifying logistics and reducing batching error
  • Spray-applicable for fast coverage of large armatures, then hand-finished for detail
  • Cement-based and breathable; accepts mineral stains and sealers for naturalistic colouring
  • Backed by Fosroc’s factory quality control and the wider Renderoc system, including the Renderoc Tema BS undercoat

Limitations & considerations

  • A decorative/theming mortar, not a structural repair material — it does not reinstate load-bearing concrete and must not be specified for structural strength
  • Requires a competent steel/mesh armature and concrete or Renderoc Tema BS undercoat to carry the build; the finish quality depends heavily on substrate preparation
  • Results are highly applicator-dependent — convincing rockwork needs skilled artisans, not general masons
  • Niche product within the Fosroc range and primarily distributed through Fosroc’s European/Iberian network; availability, exact pack sizes and the full published TDS data in India should be confirmed with the local Fosroc office before specifying
  • Detailed cured-strength, set-time and coverage figures vary by mix and application and should be taken from the current local Technical Data Sheet rather than assumed
  • As a cement-based system it should be protected from rapid drying, direct sun and rain during the initial cure to avoid shrinkage cracking
  • Not a waterproofing product on its own — submerged or constantly wet water-feature work needs an appropriate Fosroc waterproofing/tanking system behind it

Selection & best practice

Specify Renderoc Tema as a two-coat system with Renderoc Tema BS as the undercoat. Start with a structurally sound steel-and-mesh armature over a concrete core. Prepare the substrate to be clean, sound and free of laitance, oil and loose material, and bring it to a saturated-surface-dry (SSD) condition before applying the BS scratch coat. Spray or trowel Renderoc Tema in build-up layers, and do the sculpting, carving, moulding and stamping while the mortar is still plastic — plan the work so each panel can be detailed within the open time. Mix only with clean water and only the quantity that can be worked before stiffening. In hot, dry or windy Indian conditions, shade the work, mist-cure or use a curing membrane, and protect fresh work from direct sun and rain to control shrinkage. Colour with compatible mineral stains and protect with a suitable breathable sealer once cured. For any water-feature or submerged application, install an appropriate Fosroc waterproofing layer behind the theming system. Always work to the current local Fosroc Technical Data Sheet and confirm thickness, coverage and curing details with Fosroc or Space Arc Engineering before starting.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is Fosroc Renderoc Tema used for?
It is a spray- and hand-applied cementitious theming mortar used to create artificial rock, stone, bark and other decorative natural-look finishes on concrete and masonry. Mixed on site with clean water, it can be moulded, carved and stamped while plastic, then cures to a hard, weather-resistant skin for interior or exterior use. It is part of Fosroc’s Renderoc concrete-repair and rehabilitation range.
Is Renderoc Tema a structural repair mortar like Renderoc HB or GP?
No. Unlike structural Renderoc grades (HB, GP, S, FC) that reinstate load-bearing concrete, Renderoc Tema is a decorative/theming mortar. The structural strength of any artificial-rock build comes from the steel/mesh armature and concrete core behind it; Tema provides the durable sculpted appearance, not load capacity. For structural patch repair, Space Arc can specify the correct Renderoc structural grade.
Do I need Renderoc Tema BS as well?
In almost all cases, yes. Renderoc Tema BS is the companion cementitious plastering/scratch-coat mortar applied as the undercoat. It is sprayed onto the prepared armature/substrate first to provide a keyed build-up layer, and the Renderoc Tema theming coat is then worked over it. Using the two together is how Fosroc intends the system to perform.
Can it be used outdoors in Indian monsoon and heat?
Yes — Fosroc lists it as suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, and it cures to a hard, weather-resistant cementitious finish. As with any cement-based mortar, fresh work must be protected from direct sun, wind and rain and properly cured to control shrinkage. For submerged or constantly-wet water features, an appropriate Fosroc waterproofing layer should be installed behind the theming system.
What is the density and how thick can it be applied?
Fosroc distributor data gives a fresh wet density of about 1.70 kg/l, and the product is designed to be applied over a wide range of thicknesses by building up in layers. Exact thickness, coverage and cured-strength figures depend on the mix and application, so they should be taken from the current local Fosroc Technical Data Sheet for your project.
How is it mixed and applied?
It is supplied as a dry powder and gauged on site with clean water only — no other additives. The mortar is sprayed or trowelled over the Renderoc Tema BS undercoat, then sculpted, carved, moulded and stamped while still plastic to create the rock or stone texture, and finally cured and coloured with compatible stains/sealers. Skilled applicators are essential for realistic results.
Is Renderoc Tema readily available in India, and what are the alternatives?
Renderoc Tema is a niche product distributed mainly through Fosroc’s European network, so availability and exact pack sizes in India should be confirmed with the local Fosroc office or with Space Arc Engineering before specifying. Where it is not stocked, comparable outcomes are achieved with purpose-made GFRC/artificial-rock theming mortars and polymer-modified render systems from suppliers such as Sika, MYK Arment (MBS), Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and STP, or with structural Renderoc grades plus a decorative finish — Space Arc can advise the best route for your project.

How we position Fosroc Renderoc Tema

Within the Fosroc catalogue, Renderoc Tema is the decorative/aesthetic specialist of the Renderoc concrete-repair and rehabilitation family — distinct from the structural members of that range. Where Renderoc HB, GP, S and FC reinstate and protect load-bearing concrete, Tema exists purely to recreate natural rock and stone textures, and it is paired with Renderoc Tema BS as its undercoat. Specify the structural Renderoc grades when the need is genuine concrete repair, and Renderoc Tema when the brief is artificial rockwork, grottoes or stone-effect theming. Against the wider Indian market, Renderoc Tema competes with purpose-built artificial-rock and GFRC theming systems and polymer-modified decorative renders from Sika, MYK Arment (MBS), Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and STP. Its honest edge is Fosroc’s factory-controlled consistency, strong adhesion and proven Renderoc system pedigree; its honest limitation is that it is a niche, primarily European-distributed line, so for India projects Space Arc Engineering (authorised Fosroc distributor, Delhi NCR + Pan-India) will confirm current availability and, where appropriate, recommend an equivalent theming system to keep the project on schedule.
